Academy City, being the most advanced city in the Toaru universe, has its own quirks in its military system, one primarily based on technological superiority and intimidation. This article lists the military weaponry, equipment and units employed by Academy City so far.

Principles[]

General[]

Academy City's military makes extensive use of units that can be remote controlled or operate autonomously. Around the time of martial law in Academy City during January of the main story's second year, at least some of the remoted controlled military vehicles (including the HsMCV-08s used as ground-based drones) reused the same basic OS and firmware used in the city's phones, with Anna Sprengel (who had used R&C Occultics to acquire data that could be used to hijack a unit, using it sparingly to avoid the vulnerability being noticed and patched) noting an over-reliance on strategic firewalls and dangerous behavior detection algorithms.[1]

Infantry[]

Anti-Skill[]

Main article: Anti-Skill

Anti-Skill on standby.

Although ordinarily the main police force of Academy City, in times of war Anti-Skill is deployed as the primary infantry force of the Academy City military, being used in both the Avignon and Baggage City suppression, as well as the primary operators of advanced technology such as the HsF-00.[2]

Ground and Armored Units[]

During martial law in Academy City during January of the main story's second year, unnamed mobile combat vehicles such as the HsMCV-08 Predator Octopus and other vehicles reusing the same frame for other purposes (such as carrying ammunition and materiel) were deployed in the city.[1][3][4]

HsPS-15 (Large Weapon)[]

Main article: HsPS-15

HsPS-15 (also called 'Large Weapon' (ラージウェポン Rāji Uepon?)) is a technology developed by Academy City. It is the newest version of power armor as of Volume 14. It first made its appearance in Railgun Anime Episode 12 cleaning up the debris after the fight between Mikoto and the AIM Burst, and in the Volume 14 of the novels. It can be worn in addition to Anti-Skill's riot armor, but AI can also be programmed into the armor to make it work without a pilot. From Volume 14, Academy City are in possession of a few hundred of these, up to 1,000 in number.

HsSSV-01 (Dragon Rider)[]

Main article: HsSSV-01

The HsSSV-01, also called Dragon Rider (ドラゴンライダー Doragonraidā?), is a special powered suit developed by Academy City. Originally designated to be Anti-Skill's newest patrol bike, it was later drafted into World War III, said to be the most powerful motorbike ever created for military usage.[5]

Modelcase "RAILGUN"[]

Manufactured for the purpose of surpassing Misaka Mikoto's Railgun, it is a mantis-like Powered Suit that can either be manned or unmanned. It's main weapon is the Gatling railgun, which can fire several railgun attacks faster than Mikoto.[6]

It is not strictly a ground-based unit as it can fly, and even accompany HsB-07s during flight.[7]

Tanks[]

AC tanks

Academy City's Tanks

Academy City had used tanks at least 10 years prior to the beginning of the main storyline.

Many of Academy City's tanks were also used in Russia during World War III,[8][9][10] including small lightweight tanks capable of being parachute-dropped en masse from the supersonic bombers,[9][10] and some capable of moving autonomously.[10] As with much of Academy City's technology, the tanks' general designs and armor materials are described as being in a completely different league to those outside the city.[11]

Artillery[]

One of Academy City's artillery units, utilized during the defensive battle on January 5th, is the 41cm linear artillery Trebuchet (トレビュケット Torebyuketto?). A cannon using electromagnets instead of explosives, it launches shells in large arcs, reaching the ozone layer, to accurately hit a single target 20km away, piercing deep underground if needed. Additionally, it has a secondary mode where it uses the immense air friction to deliberately destroy an airborne shell above a target, converting it into a rain of plasma, compared to an artificial Tunguska event and capable of obliterating an aircraft carrier fleet if they were packed close enough together. The full setup of the main weapon, spare shells, targeting units, nearby anti-air weaponry to defend it, etc, takes up the space of a whole schoolyard.[12]

Aircraft[]

During martial law in Academy City during January of the main story's second year, giant transport planes, described as large and wide with a shape resembling a whale, were used to parachute-drop vehicles and cargo containers to various points in the city, sliding them out from a rear cargo door along rails. A gunship (ガンシップ Ganshippu?) with a similar shape was also deployed,[13] which was armed with a 20mm gatling gun,[13][14] grenade launcher and tank gun,[13] with 120mm shells,[14] deployed from a slide opening in the fuselage.[13] One of these converted transport planes was referred to as the HsAC-03 Spotlight (スポットライト Supottoraito?).[14]

HsAFH-11 (Six Wings)[]

Main article: HsAFH-11

The Six Wings carrying out an attack

HsAFH-11 (also called 'Six Wings' (六枚羽 Rokumaiba?)) is a remote-controlled military helicopter used in Academy City. One of these is worth 250,000,000 Japanese Yen.

The helicopter possesses two rocket engines and can travel up to mach 2.5, with some questioning if it can even be called a helicopter. In terms of heavy gun-fire support and moving about it is without peer, with one of them being capable of destroying about 4,500 mercenaries out of the 5,000 hired by Block in mere minutes in the events of Volume 15. The six wings is made in 3 pairs, and can fire at six different positions, thus earning its nickname.

Four Wings[]

Main article: Four Wings

Currently only seen action in an urban environment in domestic concerns. Four Wings is a slimmer version of the Six Wings, making it more maneuverable than its predecessor. It uses sonic weapons to stop any human resistance and then use machine guns and missiles to finish them off.[15]

HsF-00[]

Main article: HsF-00

HsF-00 is a giant supersonic fighter plane measuring about 80m in length first introduced in Volume 20. It is capable of moving at a top speed of over 7,000 km/h, as well as doing impossible maneuvers such as flying sideways or spinning like a top. Although the plane is capable of surviving these extreme movements, the pilot cannot. To remedy this problem, the pilot is frozen at -70 degrees Celsius, and there are machines hooked up to the pilots vital organs to preserve life. The computation abilities of the pilots are also enhanced by machines (similar to Accelerator) in order to compensate for the extreme temperatures.

HsB series[]

Main article: HsB

HsB refers to a series of supersonic stealth bombers.

HsB-02[]
HsB-02 Stealth Bombers

HsB-02s, as seen in the anime

HsB-02 is a series of planes made by Academy City, classified as supersonic stealth bomber planes. Its maximum speed can go up to 7,000 km/h, which is capable of out-flying any missiles trying to intercept the planes. First appeared in Volume 14, where 8 of them was sent to Avignon to suppress a riot, along with several hundred of HsPS-15 automated suits.

In addition to it's bombing capabilities, it also has an attack called Earth Blade (地殻破断アースブレード Āsu Burēdo?, lit. "Crust Fracture") which by accelerating iron sand into the vacuum left by the plane's speed to over 10,000 km/h can create an blade of molten metal and heated gas that is heated to around 8,000 degrees Celsius.

HsB-07[]

An updated version of the HsB-02. The most notable change from its predecessor is its use the piloting system of the HsF-00 aircraft, freezing the body of the pilot.[7]

AWACS[]

Academy City utilizes AWACS, an airborne radar system designed to detect aircraft at long ranges and control and command the battle space in an air engagement by directing fighter and attack plane strikes. The AWACS utilizes airborne lasers, powerful enough to take down missiles.[7]

According to a flight simulator-hobbyist trucker who learned the information from video games, the HsAWACS-05 has a 1000km range with its plate-like radome, capable of tracking over 1500 enemy and ally craft, sharing lock information on 500 of them so allies can attack. The craft circles the airspace from a distance to secure air superiority, with a lock from afar meaning fighters don't need to circle behind enemy craft and carefully aim.[16]

Aerial Drones[]

Academy City utilizes a number of aerial drones.

One example seen during the January martial law declaration are the self-destructing drones known as Snakeheads (スネークヘッド Sunēkuheddo?). Described as a 45cm plastic isosceles triangle with a hole in their middle for a coaxial rotor,[17][18] they are deployed in hundreds, designed to spread out over an area to locate their target and then gathering overhead ahead, the sky immediately above them being hardest place for a ground vehicle to attack.[17] Once locked on, they ignite their solid fuel (carrying as much explosive as an anti-tank rocket) and drop towards their target to explode.[17] Given that small drones commonly lose control and crash from signal interference and crosswinds, the use of these armed explosives en masse across Academy City, with increased risk of accidents, was only really possible under martial law, with people ordered to stay home to avoid harm from accidents rather than avoiding the odds of one happening.[17]

Air Defense Network[]

Academy City also has an air defense network with interceptor weapons that are 20 or 30 years ahead in technology. It can be extended to all of Japan, which Academy City considered an ally.[19]

Naval Units[]

While Academy City is not on a coast, it does possess submarines, prepared by cooperative organizations based on the technological information supplied to them. These secret weapons are easily five times the size of 100 meter long Russian submarine, but despite this they are difficult to detect, when submerged. Normally a large submarine would be noticeable from propeller noise and water disturbance. The Academy City submarine lacks a propeller, instead its surface detects the movements of ocean currents and uses water jets to propel itself, such that the noise blends in with the currents and the noise of the submarine itself is interfered with so enemy sonar won't detect anything unusual. The submarine's surface has also been made difficult to detect, preventing it from being detected by magnetism and radar. They possess ultrasonic weapons, which can be used to make an attack look like propeller trouble.[20]

During World War III, the large submarines were secretly used to ship cargo to Academy City, slipping past Russian submarines undetected even at a distance of only a few meters, and meeting with smaller subs in Japanese waters which would take the materials to port.[20]

Only two surface naval units developed by Academy City are currently known; the prototype next-generation aircraft cruiser HsB-AD-CVA01 (also known as Fugaku), which was moored and on display at a canal in School District 6 in early January of the story's second year,[21] and the drone carrier Kagenui (かげぬい Kagenui?).[22]

Space Units[]

Academy City also possesses a number of space-based weapons, many of which are unofficial and several of which are in violation of certain international treaties. Some of them are mounted on the official satellites (three to four in number[23][24][25]),[26][27] while others are on unofficial satellites and spacecraft deployed from the main satellites or through other means.[25][27]

The Hikoboshi II has at least two specific weapons installed; an experimental laser which acts as an optical bombing weapon,[28][26] and the Magnetic Debris Cannon, which accelerates space debris in orbit via electromagnetism before dropping it onto a surface target.[29][30] It also has the Space Save Supply Shoot System, a terraforming device that was given a military use (aiming at Earth rather than other planets), which was not originally intended, as an excuse to receive funding from the city's higher-ups.[27]

Along with the laser installed on the Hikoboshi II,[26] there are also unofficial laser satellites that can act as optical weapons (光学兵器 Kōgaku Heiki?), which have been secretly deployed from the main satellite.[25]

Either the Hikoboshi II or the other official satellites (presumably the former), can also drop a cylinder of ultra-heavy tungsten alloy, 10m long and 90cm in diameter, with angular points and special grooves on its side which, along with the angle of the tip, that focus the pillar's kinetic energy and pierce straight down into the ground, with the weapon capable of easily digging up an underground nuclear shelter.[14]
