As a Transcendent of the Bridge Builders Cabal, Alice is powerful enough to rival the regular magic side on her own,[6] and she is exceptional even amongst her fellow Transcendents, standing above them.[1][7][2]
Most spells used by people (including those of other Transcendents) are said to be built from the basics of magic, but Alice is said to be one of the exceptions alongside Magic Gods and some Saints.[8] Given Aleister Crowley's role in connecting Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to the occult and Kabbalah,[9][10][11] Alice herself has a connection to his Magick system, though her exact origins in relation to it are not currently known.[11]
Even without displaying her full unrestrained power, she was able to instantly defeat two regular Transcendents fighting one another with their full power unsealed.[12] During the events on December 29th, she was completely unaffected by deadly bacteria, bugs, and Frillsand #G's 'curse', and on recalling this when having to face her, Kamijou Touma assessed that she was immune to other internal damage, scientific or magical.[1][13] She can be affected by Bologna Succubus's Cold Mistress, said to be one of the only Transcendents in the cabal who could fight back against her if the spell was used right.[14][8][15] While the actual capability of people to read her mind is unknown, her psychedelic mind was noted by Trismegistus to be hazardous to those who might try to do so.[16] She was also the only Transcendent to initially remain on her feet when the revived "Christian Rosencreutz" knocked the cabal down in a single strike.[17]
Alice appears to differ from regular humans and even other Transcendents with regards to life and death.[3] While CRC was able to seemingly kill her by crushing her head, her headless corpse revived one day later, though seemingly not exactly as she was before that death.[3] Good Old Mary's resurrection technique was noted to be unable to revive her.[3]
Alice also appears to have some form of capability to 'read' things about individuals, either through observation or her powers.[18][Notes 1][12][3] In the case of Johann Valentin Andreae as she was exposing his deception of being Christian Rosencreutz, he theorized that Alice was reading the truth about his identity and history from the pieces of flesh she was tearing from his body.[3] However, her assessment regarding Touma during the consulate battle seemed to be incomplete and not fully accurate.[12]
Live Adventures in Wonderland[]

Alice, with various entities created by her magic and associated with Wonderland.
Alice's unique magic, known as Live Adventures in Wonderland (ライブアドベンチャーズインワンダーランド Raibu Adobenchāzu in Wandārando?), is a Kabbalah-based power that is capable of affecting the entire world.[18][19] By going on an adventure with someone, she can link together different ideas, laws and definitions, innocently using her magic to build bridges between them, regardless of pre-existing connections (or lack thereof) and flawed premises, to find new meanings, create new paths, and influence reality.[18][19]
An example suggested by Alice herself to illustrate how her powers could work, was the idea that since there were four emotions (喜怒哀楽 Kidoairaku?) and four elements (火水風土 Hisuifūdo?), when roleplaying one could draw on special power by intentionally drawing on a specific emotion within oneself. This was described as a "stretch" or "sophistry" - it might seem reasonable at first, but there are no existing myths or laws behind it. Additionally, the four emotions are an Eastern concept while the four elements are a Western one.[18] Other flawed notions that Alice mentioned included the idea that burning something required phlogiston, that neutrinos could travel faster-than-light, and that observing one of a pair of separated particles would determine the spin of the other regardless of the distance they were separated by.[18][Notes 2][18][Notes 3][18][20][21] As stated by Alice and temporarily illustrated during the incident on December 29th, it works even if it is a theory on how to resurrect the dead.[18]
The world as influenced by Alice's magic, sometimes called Alice's world (アリスの世界 Arisu no Sekai?) or Wonderland (ワンダーランド Wandārando?),[18][22][23][24] is a storybook one that can be greatly removed from how the real world would normally be.[18][23][24][19] When Touma confronted Alice on what she had been doing, time appeared to freeze and only the two of them remained facing one another in the space they were in at the time.[18] The frozen landscape outside was greatly changed, with a giant tower above the current location, enormous pumpkins shaped like human faces growing from the ground all over the place and breaking through asphalt, five-point shooting stars drawing trails behind them in the night sky, and incomprehensible ancient characters and diagrams dancing around like neon signs.[18]
On being convinced to put things back the way they were and Alice giving a verbal command to immediately cease all modified kabbalah bridge linking within Live Adventures in Wonderland, there was a thunk like a metal lock opening, followed by a light which enveloped Touma, with senses and surroundings fading away, eventually restarting at the time, place and events where Wonderland's effects had previously begun to be applied.[18] Touma had suspected that if he had continued through the optimal world without questioning it, all of the pieces would have intertwined and become real.[18]
Another side of Alice,[3] opposite in nature to the bridge building of Live Adventures in Wonderland, manifests in the power to reveal one's true nature, no matter how deeply one tries to hide it.[3] As noted by Othinus, it is tied to the ending of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, where Alice wakes up before the end of the climactic trial to find that her journey through Wonderland was all a dream, with the illusion-filled nonsense story also present hard, unshakeable reality at the end.[3] It was also noted how this might have been part of the real reason why the roleplaying Transcendents feared her.[3] In the case of the similar Johann Valentin Andreae, who was pretending to be Christian Rosencreutz, as she tores pieces from his body, she spoke of the truth behind the author and his deception, in the manner of a mother telling a story to a child, stripping away his disguise and power.[3]
Wonders[]
There are various entities connected to Wonderland that Alice can manifest,[25][26][19][13][27][28] described by Alice herself as wonders (不思議 Fushigi?),[12] and as toys (玩具 Omocha?) or the Alice Series (アリスシリーズ Arisu Shirīzu?) by others.[28]
Sometimes, these entities manifest automatically as a form of psychological defense to deal with any attack or obstacle which she cannot avoid by herself.[25][26][19] This is apparently not out of protecting herself or fear of injury, but because an attack that hits her and obstructs her movement is likely to anger her and lead her to kill the offender without even meaning to or without thinking, so she makes sure to block attacks so that does not happen.[26][19] During the events on December 29th, this psychological defense initially took the form of her flamingo cricket bat and hedgehog balls,[29][30][31][32][25][26][19] followed by the Executioner.[26][19] Should an opponent have escaped the Executioner's blade, they would likely have been faced by Alice's own power.[33][26][19]
On January 6th, while Alice was in an unstable state of mind, her inner conflict manifested in the form of conflict between her toys which manifested nearby, battling across the grounds of Touma's school.[27][34][28]
The known "wonders" that Alice has been seen to manifest include:[Notes 4][35][1][2][36]
Name | Origin | Notes |
---|---|---|
Flamingo Bat (フラミンゴのバット Furamingo no Batto?) | In the Queen of Hearts' croquet game, flamingos were used for croquet mallets. |
Alice's flamingoes take the form of pink cricket bats that can float through the air, automatically blocking attacks sent Alice's way.[29][30][31][3][36] The flamingo bat was manifested several times during the events on December 29th.[1][29][30][31][25][19] Multiple flamingo bats were also among the wonders summoned on January 6th,[27][28] one initially to block "CRC"'s diamond bullet,[3] and manifested at Touma's school.[27][28][36] |
Hedgehog Balls (ハリネズミのボール Harinezumi no Bōru?) | In the Queen of Hearts' croquet game, hedgehogs were used for balls. |
The hedgehogs often appear from under Alice's dress, curled up into balls.[1] She sometimes uses the hedgehogs as cushions.[1] They are capable of shooting out their spines.[1][36] Hedgehogs manifested several times during the events on December 29th.[1][31][32][25][37][19] They were also among the wonders summoned on January 6th and manifested at Touma's school.[27][28][36] |
Executioner (処刑人 Shokeijin?) |
The Executioner is an emaciated, bony, axe-wielding figure, wrapped in a tattered black cloak, emerging from Alice's shadow.[26] The Executioner was summoned by Alice on December 29th when she and Touma ran into Frillsand #G.[26] It was also among the wonders summoned on January 6th and manifested at Touma's school.[27][38][39][36] | |
Shrink Drink/"Drink me" | Alice encounters various size-changing food and drink in Wonderland, the first of which was a shrinking drink contained in a bottle with a label saying "Drink me". |
One of Alice's toys that was converted into a tool that could be used by others.[40][15][36] The Shrink Drinks are anti-Transcendent spiritual items that were lent to the cabal's execution specialist Mut Thebes for use against Anna Sprengel, intended to diminish a Transcendent's power when injected, much like how the drink physically shrank the imbiber in story.[40][15] |
Gryphon (グリフォン Gurifon?) |
The Gryphon is a beast with the front half of a bird and the rear half of the lion, at least 7m long with a wingspan of 20m or more, with high physical destructive and defensive power.[13] The Gryphon was summoned by Alice to attack Touma during the events at the consulate.[13] It was also among the wonders summoned on January 6th and manifested at Touma's school.[27][28][36] | |
Caterpillar (イモムシ Imomushi?) | A large caterpillar was among the wonders summoned on January 6th and manifested at Touma's school.[27] | |
Piglet (子ブタ Kobuta?) | A piglet was among the wonders summoned on January 6th and manifested at Touma's school.[27] | |
Dinah (ダイナ Daina?) |
Dinah manifests as a giant black and white cat, the size of a school gym, and is described as the strongest of Alice's toys.[27][28] Dinah was among the wonders summoned on January 6th and manifested at Touma's school.[27][28][39] | |
Mice (ネズミ Nezumi?) | Mice were among the wonders summoned on January 6th and manifested at Touma's school.[34] The swarm of mice were described as the size of sports bags.[34] | |
Teacups (紅茶のカップ Kōcha no Kappu?) and Saucers (ソーサー Sōsā?) | Fixtures of tea parties, such as the mad tea party held by the Hatter and the March Hare. | Floating teacups and saucers were among the wonders summoned on January 6th,[41][42] manifesting in the air as far away from Touma's school as a certain bridge,[41] and fading away as Alice came to her senses and Touma's death approached, the girl's dream ending and reality setting in.[42] |
Queen of Hearts (ハートの女王 Hāto no Jōu?) | Although not seen, the Queen of Hearts was referenced by Anna Sprengel as waiting near Alice during the events on January 6th.[38] | |
March Hare (三月ウサギ Sangatsu Usagi?) | The March Hare was among the wonders summoned on January 6th and manifested at Touma's school.[28][39] It is merely described as a bipedal hare.[28][39] It struck and forced back Aradia as she entered the school, breaking the railroad crossing barrier she was wielding,[28] and was later seen grappling with the Bologna Succubus.[39] | |
Cook (料理番 Ryōriban?) | The Cook was among the wonders summoned on January 6th and manifested at Touma's school.[28] Little is known about it other than that it was throwing irons and pots, around the time the Transcendents were trying to get into the school, and was easily cut down by Anna Kingsford's amplified water spell.[28] |
Transcendence[]
Like the other Transcendents, Alice possesses a seal that she can release and manifest her powers at their fullest.[43][44][12][45] The exact designation of her seal is not known, but the seal is that of a children’s book (絵本 Ehon?).[45] When released, the usual Alice tears open and another Alice emerges from within,[18][12] dressed in revealing leather attire far removed from the usual image of a storybook girl.[18][12] She has not been seen to make any of the incantations that other derivative Transcendents have sometimes made when releasing their own seals and 'departing human territory'.[46][43][44][47]
During the battle at Touma's school, Alice instead emerged from her shell in an adult form, possibly that of her previous true form as Alice Pleasance Liddell, with Othinus wondering if she used herself as ingredients to recreate the ideal version of herself,[48] though she was somewhat animalistic and in a broken state of mind.[48][39] When she initially spoke after emerging, on top of the ominous atmosphere, her first word was described as creating a distortion, with it seeming to Touma as though a child had scribbled out the outlines of everything he could see around him in black and white.[48]
During this battle, she extracted meaning from her actions and used them to produce powerful effects.[39][49][50] With her baseline purity forcibly increased, Alice's actions and the meanings refined from them are highly pure, without having to go through the normal cleansing processes most people usually take when using their body's interior world to influence the linked exterior - such that when using this magic, by taking an ordinary action anyone can make, she will blessed with a special result without having to focus.[39] It is described as both a type of magic and a type of miracle, as well as a toolless variant of the Pneuma-less Shell and perhaps a logical actualization of legends of the holy producing miracles empty-handed.[39] However, Alice must take physical action in order to trigger these 'miracles' (i.e. she cannot kill her enemies with a thought).[39] Alice is also limited to using one 'miracle' at a time, unable to combine them or use them in parallel (e.g. she cannot attack while evading through 'crawling' or doing something else while focusing on healing herself).[49]
Explicitly identified actions that Alice took and utilized during the battle included:
Action | Meaning(s) | Effects |
---|---|---|
Walking (歩く Aruku?) |
Movement | By taking a single step, Alice can instantly move to a desired location.[39] |
Crawling (這う Hau?) |
Evasion | While in a crawling pose, with her limbs pressed down on the floor and her head lower,[39] Alice is capable of evading all attacks, which pass through her as though she were intangible.[39][49] |
Stomping (地団太 Jitanda?) |
Stomping is described as a juvenile act of intimidation and resistance, a threat meaning to use childish instinct to overpower adult logic, a challenge and attempted reversal against someone superior, and a primitive gamble attempted by most humans at some point.[39] |
By tapping her heel down and creating a vibration, Alice's adversaries are momentarily fixed in place, even if they are on separate floors to her.[39] During the battle at Touma's school, she attempted to jump down and land her heel on the frozen Touma's head, though he managed to evade as the spell was broken by something being knocked to the ground, with Alice's heel smashing deep into the floor.[39] |
Binding (縛る Shibaru?) |
Stopping a target's movement. |
A move described as being meant to stop a target's movement and separate them out from all possible interference.[39] When using it against Anna's flames, Alice grabbed her hair and swung her head around so the thick bundle drew a large circle in the air. This circle narrowed down as soon as the flames passed through it and stopped them in mid-air. By tugging on the hair binding the flames, Alice was able to pull Anna forward and make her momentarily lose her balance.[39] |
Cursing (呪い Noroi?) |
When projectiles were fired at her, approaching from multiple directions, wordless and without looking, Alice extended a finger and rotated it once clockwise, causing the projectiles to veer away from her.[39] It was described as a single childish action which easily confused every eye on her and brought them under her spell.[39] | |
Flicking (弾く Hajiku?) |
When prepare to 'flick', Alice curls up her middle finger and holds it down with her thumb. The attack doesn't produce light or sound but sent Aradia flying through a wall and would have apparently caused her heart to burst if she had not distributed the damage between herself and her identical counterpart.[39] | |
Grabbing (掴む Tsukamu?) |
Equipping and wielding Grabbing is described as an act that denys an object its own will and apply one's own will to it.[39] |
Grabbing allows Alice to turn something or something else into a weapon, forcibly equipping herself with them and boosting her own strength.[39] During the battle at Touma's school, when equally matched against Anna, Alice casually grabbed a beaten-up Gryphon with a single hand to wield as a giant club, and then did the same to Trismegistus by the wrist.[39] It is described as a superior version of Mut Thebes's ability to absorb and wield the shadows of any weapon.[39] |
Smelling (嗅ぐ Kagu?) |
Locating | After sniffing out a target's precise location, Alice's next attack is guaranteed to hit, regardless of how poorly aimed it is.[39] |
Hugging (抱く Daku?) |
Hugging is described as an act of reliance on another, using a person's full body to acquire a sense of fulfillment from outside.[49] | An attack which requires Alice to spread her arms wide and come straight towards her target without considering defense, leaving her vulnerable to attack. Though he wasn't hugged, Touma considered that a hug from Alice in this state could have torn his body apart.[49] |
Alice also used a similar attack relating to claws (爪 Tsume?) and scratches (引っ掻く Hikkaku?). When initially used against Touma who narrowly dodged it as Alice brought her hand up diagonally, five claw marks tore through the wall behind him and many bookcases in-between the two.[39] Her fingers were earlier described as being capable of tearing through steel.[48]
During her initial attacks, Alice used a roar (咆哮 Hōkō?), which reflected off a room's walls and floor before gathering on a single point, though Anna was able to bend the shockwave with a sweep of her hand.[48] When Alice paused at seeing this, she was in the middle of another attack, with her right hand jabbing out with her fingers together. The intended effect was not revealed as Anna stopped it head on with an equally powerful attack,[48] with Alice spinning round and bringing her deflected hand around fast horizontally in a new attack, blocked at the last second by Trismegistus's sword.[48]
Notes[]
- ↑ During the incident on December 29th, Alice displayed knowledge of Touma's encounter with Aihana Etsu, with Touma unclear as to how she knew about it. It is currently unknown whether she learned if through a powers of hers, Anna Sprengel telling Touma's story to her, or something else.
- ↑ In considering what Alice had told him about her power, Touma considered the idea that she could notice that a paint set on sale had 12 colors, associated it with the 12 numbers on a clock, and from nothing more than that gain complete control over time. He also considered that this would not just apply to Alice, as the moment she decided it was true, all paint in the world would gain that same power.
- ↑ Theories and ideas that other characters and the narration have mentioned with regards to what Alice could connect to and utilize have included the Phlogiston theory and faster-than-light neutrinos previously mentioned as examples by Alice herself, as well as the geocentric model, Moon landing conspiracy theories, the Y2K problem, the notion of ancient nuclear war, dinosaur farts causing the ice age, the location of Yamatai, perpetual motion machines capable of producing unlimited energy and Flat Earth. Universal gravitation and quantum theory have also been mentioned as more accurate theories that she could also utilize.
- ↑ The giant yellow duck present at the Bridge Builders Cabal's base was not explicitly identified as one of the wonders and Anna Sprengel, after seeing the duck, considered a giant duck as a potential example of what the Transcendents might make for Alice if she wanted it, as though critically important regardless of actual nature, however given the Duck in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and the patterns of Alice's later manifestation of entities from the story, it is reasonably likely that the duck was one of them.
