Androids (アンドロイド Andoroido?) are humanoid machines built (usually from scratch) to closely match the shape of the human body.[1]
Etymology[]
The term android was derived from the Greek root andr- (ἀνδρ-, "man, male") and the suffix -oid (-ειδ, "having the form or likeness of"). Although the term is used for robots in the shape of a human, both male and female, the ones with a female appearance can also be referred to by the term gynoid.

An android is a type of robot, which is designed to closely match the shape and structure of a human body.[2][3][4] Unlike cyborgs, which are developed around an organic base, with mechanical components connected to, replacing and functioning together with organic parts,[5][2][6][7][Notes 1][Notes 2][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] an android is built on a purely mechanical basis, with artificial parts being made (often from scratch) and assembled into a humanoid form.[2][4]
Depending on the quality of their construction, an android might seem indistinguishable from a human on the outside.[2] Although modeled on the structure of the human body, depending on the materials and technology used in their construction, an android's physical capabilities might greatly exceed those of a normal human.[1][5][2][4]
There is an android development plant in School District 22.[16] Certain android technologies and units, such as some connected to the Dark Side of Academy City, are not known to the public.[5][17]
One notable case is Ladybird, a highly advanced machine developed by Kihara Hasuu, who was advanced enough to possess thoughts and emotions much like those of a human, and even utilize an esper ability.[2][3][4][18][17] In conversation with Ladybird, Hasuu mentioned that the term android indicated "an artificial human built with an engineering approach" and as such, it seemed appropriate to him for a completed android to behave like a human (though this did not detract from his deception and cruelty regarding her).[3][18][17] Unknown to Ladybird herself (who had believed her development as an android with an esper power would eventually mean that human test subjects would no longer have to be sacrificed for esper development research),[4][18][17] she was actually designed to regularly extract and incorporate external brain matter to address an issue with her own brain.[18][Notes 1][19] When Hamazura Shiage learned of this, he felt that Ladybird did not strictly fit the definition of an android.[18]

Notes[]
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 When Ladybird's brain-devouring nature came to light, she was contrasted with the approach used for the cyborg Rensa, where individuals were reduced to a hypothalamus and took it in turns to 'pilot' a single, fully mechanized body, with Ladybird being described by Hasuu as a body given a brain rather than a cyborg made by giving a brain a body like Rensa.
- ↑ Although the Doppelganger's body is entirely made up from artificial parts, with the removed cybernetics after Kuriba Ryouko was recombined into one person (having been split into two cyborgs for a year for the Total Human Cyborg Replacement Project) having been assembled together to form her, she is usually referred to (and has referred to herself) by the term "cyborg" (despite no longer having proper organic components), with the term "android" not being used in media. The exact reason for this is currently unknown.
