The Bologna Succubus (ボロニイサキュバス Boronii Sakyubasu?) is a Transcendent of the Bridge Builders Cabal, introduced in Souyaku Toaru Majutsu no Index.[3]
Appearance[]
The Bologna Succubus is described as a beautiful horned and winged woman,[3] appearing college-aged by Touma's reckoning.[4] She has light skin, long, fluffy blonde hair, a large bust, and pink eyes with heart shapes in them.[4][Illustration] She also has a pair of goatlike horns, a pair of giant, thin bat-like wings with claws in a vaguely heart-shape, and a long tail with an arrowhead-shaped tip, all light pink. Her attire, also all pink, consists of a lacy one-piece corset with rose thorn decorations, arm covers, stockings and high-heels.[4][Illustration]

Being associated with the story of a death sentence handed over an accusation of running a brothel of wanton succubi, the Bologna Succubus has made it her purpose to protect the reputation of the falsely accused and hates any such accusations, willing to risk her life to save victims of them, and fight her fellow Transcendents over such matters.[6][7][1]
Background[]
The story of the Bologna Succubus concerns a case in 1468 where a man in Bologna, Italy was found guilty of running a brothel of succubi and executed for it. Because of court records concerning the case, it is one of the few cases of demons being officially recognized by the government of the time.[3]
The background of the individual who took on the identity of the Bologna Succubus as a Transcendent of the Bridge Builders Cabal is currently unknown,[2] but given her chosen persona and salvation conditions, it can be assumed that she was originally someone who loathed false accusations.[6][2]

When Aradia was guiding Anna around their base, the Bologna Succubus was carrying a plastic bath set and humming on her way to the bath.[3]

As the cabal became split as to how to approach the issue of Kamijou Touma, the Bologna Succubus was on the side of the Rescuers. When Aradia attempted to kill Touma on December 31st, she acted together with Good Old Mary to save his life,[5] with Mary employing her resurrection technique twice to save Touma and the Bologna Succubus donating her blood to make up for the blood he lost.[4][1]

After Aradia's second assassination attempt, the Bologna Succubus stayed with Touma and attempted to fly him to safety. She would accompany him throughout much of the day afterwards.[5]
The Bologna Succubus was eventually mortally injured by Aradia and her witches, and close to death, having lost too much blood for Good Old Mary's resurrection technique to work and humans being unable to give blood to a demon unlike vice versa.[1] However, following Kumokawa Seria's suggestion of using a substitute to stabilize her blood pressure enough for the resurrection to be carried out,[1] she, Mary and Index managed to find a suitable substitute (some iron distribution fluid in a cosmetic surgery clinic) to save the Succubus, with Mary staying to watch over her afterwards and Seria having slipped a GPS tracker onto her.[8][9]
New Year's Arc[]

On January 2nd, when Touma was invited to the Bridge Builders Cabal's newly established consulate in School District 12 by Alice (rendering the GPS tracker unnecessary),[10][11][12] the Bologna Succubus was recovering in one of the third floor rooms.[13][14][15]
During dinner, Touma and several others took the Bologna Succubus's share up to her room, where she was entertaining herself with one of Academy City's VR games. When Alice started to take an interest, she quickly employed her Cold Mistress at Mary's shout before dissuading Alice. To Touma's dismay, Bologna Succubus had no objections to the plan to unilaterally execute Anna Sprengel immediately, as the accusations against her were not false.[13]
After Touma's escape from the consulate on the morning of January 3rd, following his near-death at Trismegistus's hands and a falling out with Alice over the matter of execution,[16] which left the girl in a broken state,[17] the recovered and exasperated Bologna Succubus told the worked-up Trismegistus to not get into a further fight with Mary and patch things up, before being sent to support Mut Thebes's hunt and punishment mission against Anna Sprengel.[17] Later that night, in the School District 12 storage unit lot which the Transcendents had moved to from the consulate to begin their ceremony (given the risk that Alice's condition might worsen to the point of being unable to perform),[18][19] the Bologna Succubus performed a single-shot divination to locate Anna's position for Mut Thebes.[18] Having participated at points in the cabal's two day long ceremony, the Bologna Succubus was present for its conclusion late on January 4th, which brought the cabal's intended savior Christian Rosencreutz into the world, and was subsequently knocked down with the other Transcendents as "CRC" was revealed to be different for the worse than what the legends claimed of him.[19]

The Bologna Succubus was one of the surviving Transcendents capable of acting after the cabal was devastated by the summoned "CRC".[19][20][21] On January 5th, she was involved in action against "CRC" in effort to stall his destructive march towards Heaven Canceller's Hospital, along with Touma's allies and Academy City's forces.[22][20][21][23][24][25][26][27][28] She was mortally wounded during the final battle, but was revived afterwards through Good Old Mary's resurrection.[27][28]

On the night of January 6th, the Bologna Succubus, along with Aradia, Good Old Mary and Mut Thebes, was heading to help Touma meet with Alice but they were stopped at a certain iron bridge by Blodeuwedd, Vidhatri and 2nd Saga, three other survivors who had scattered after Alice's apparent death and opportunistically returned after the end of "CRC"'s rampage and learning that Alice was alive again, standing in their way as they were not willing to risk losing their power.[29] In the ensuing battle, she mostly fought Blodeuwedd, with whom she shared a mutual emnity. Despite being an advantage for much of it, with her opponents being supported by "resonance" with Alice, but ultimately managed to defeat Blodeuwedd.[29][30][31][32][33] Afterwards, she fought Alice's toys alongside her comrades at Touma's school,[34] grappling with the March Hare around the time that Aradia made contact with Touma and Alice.[35]
Abilities[]
As a Transcendent of the Bridge Builders Cabal, the Bologna Succubus is said to be powerful enough to rival the regular magic side on her own under the right circumstances.[4] Outside of this, she is capable of flight using her wings and her tail is prehensile.[4] Like some other Transcendents, she uses common tone creation to translate and synthesize her speech into unfamiliar languages.[4][1]
She can also use a form of divination, utilizing a magic circle drawn from a combination of her saliva and some milk, derived from stories of men warding off succubus attacks by placing a saucer of milk by their pillow to be mistaken for the target substance.[18] When the spell is used, a portion of the circle sizzles and turn brown to indicate the target's direction and distance from her present location.[18]
Given the cases of the other Transcendents in the cabal,[15][36][37][38] the Bologna Succubus likely possesses a seal that she can release in order to manifest her fullest power.[38] The exact nature in her case is currently unknown, though Aleister Crowley mentioned that while not sure he could make some guesses from the data he'd acquired.[38]
Cold Mistress[]
The Bologna Succubus uses a spell known as Cold Mistress (コールドミストレス Kōrudo Misutoresu?), which converts pleasure signals into pain.[6][7][1] It has a large range, capable of covering the whole of Shibuya and possibly more, with both specific and general targeting.[6][7]
As the Bologna Succubus described to Kamijou Touma, during the Inquisition there were sinners who claimed to have slept with incubi or succubi, and the recorded confessions of the experience extracted from them through torture generally come in one of two kinds - either it provided great otherworldly pleasure, or it was painful, cold and disgusting.[6] Accordingly, Cold Mistress can replace any and all pleasure signals with pain, up to intense and excrutiating levels.[6][1]
It is said that the greater the happiness a target is feeling, the greater the hell the Succubus can condemn them to.[6] These pleasure signals include the desires for food, sex and sleep, described as instructions meant to efficiently guide people towards survival and reproduction through attempts to fulfill their animal desires. Turning them on their head, the Bologna Succubus can kill people through starvation or sleep deprivation, or prevent reproduction.[6] As demonstrated with Aradia while she was trying to power through the agony born from the pleasure of an imminent victory, it can also be switched off suddenly to cause all of the affected signals and emotions to flood back, momentarily delaying the target.[6]
By adjusting the magic's strength, Cold Mistress can used to create a nagging irritation and subconscious source of unease, which attempts to soothe will only worsen, the irritation coming to dominate the mind. As the Bologna Succubus herself has mentioned, when faced with a large invisible factor that they have trouble understanding, humans have a tendency to look for someone to blame and direct their hatred towards a closer, more visible target, attempting to eliminate it to reclaim peace of mind and calm themselves. The witch hunts were cited as an example, with many accusations of virtuous citizens towards one another, not even attacking the real supernatural demons at the center of the issue. Exploiting this, with the right trigger, the Bologna Succubus can deliberately set off mass hysteria and an artificial 'witch hunt'.[7]
While the spell is a potent one, and has been described as possibly capable of stopping the cabal's feared Alice Anotherbible if the conditions were right,[6][7][1][13] it is not effective if the target is not seeking pleasure or comfort, and they can drown themselves in negative emotions such as hatred and regret in order to avoid it.[1]

- The accused in the case that forms the Bologna Succubus's backstory, charged with summoning demons and running a brothel of succubi, is apparently a Servite friar named Giovanni Faelli da Verona. His trial and final condemnation in 1468 by the inquisitor of Bologna, Simone da Novara, took place three years after a previous trial on a charge of necromancy by Bologna's previous inquisitor Girolamo Parlasca da Como.[39][40]
- Previously, during events at the end of Shinyaku Toaru Majutsu no Index, which involved Coronzon - who was capable of producing a physical body for itself unlike most other demons, beliefs concerning whether succubi and incubi have physical bodies of their own were mentioned and discussed.[41][42]
