Coin of Nicholas

Coin of Nicholas

The Coin of Nicholas (ニコラウスの金貨 Nikorausu no Kinka?) is a type of wish-granting spiritual item, usable only on Christmas Day, produced and distributed by R&C Occultics.[1][2]

Etymology[]

The coin is named after St. Nicholas, one of the figures from whom the Christmas character of Santa Claus is derived and one of the names used to refer to him, depicted on the front of the coin.[2][1]

Limited to Christmas Day,[3] the Coin of Nicholas can grant a person's wishes. In order to use it, a person must hold the coin in their hand and make a wish, offering up a prayer to the coin.[2][4][5] The coin will then cause a designated phenomenon to grant the wish, ignoring probability and statistics to give it a 100% success rate.[2][4] However, it cannot grant a wish which is impossible to fulfil,[4][6] might fulfil the wish in a manner other than how the user hoped depending on how it was phrased,[7] and can be negated by a counter-wish from another Coin of Nicholas.[8]

After it is used, it takes one hour for the coin to recharge its power before it can be used again,[4] regardless of the quality or quantity of the action it had performed or whether the wish was successfully granted.[4][8][6] The coin's charge is indicate by the amount of light shining from its outer edge, which gradually increases clockwise (on the front of the coin) from the top of the coin as the coin charges. Once the dull outer edge is fully lit again, the coin is fully charged.[2][4][9]

Although considered a spiritual item, it draws its power from the ley lines rather than using magical power from the user's body like most spiriual items, making it similar to grimoire.[3] Because of the way it functions, it can be used by espers without them experiencing the usual rejection reaction which they would normally suffer from using magic directly.[4]

As per Anna Sprengel's intentions, the coins were randomly distributed to various people in Academy City,[3] who woke on Christmas Day to find a coin in their hand. Shortly afterwards, a user manual was posted on the official site for R&C Occultics and quickly spread across the internet.[4] The coins which were given to members of Anti-Skill and the Dark Side of Academy City greatly distorted the course of Operation Handcuffs, turning it into a slaughter.[1]
