Christian cross

The Christian cross.

A Cross (十字 Jūji?) is a symbol consisting of two intersecting lines or bars, usually perpendicular to one another. It is also a term used for symbols based around the shape and objects in that shape.

The shape has various associations in belief and religion, with a cross being the primary symbol of Christianity, representing the cross on which the Son of God died. With its associated meanings, the cross also plays an important role in various forms of magic.

Etymology[]

Cross, Rood

The term cross, as referring to the tool of the crucifixion, arose in Late Old English in the 11th century, with the non-religious intersection meaning apparently arising in the late 14th century. It is likely derived from similar terms in Old Norse and Old Irish, in turn ultimately derived from the Latin crux. The previous term used for the instrument in Old/Middle English was rood.

The cross is the primary symbol of Christianity, representing the cross (known as the True Cross) on which the Son of God died during the Crucifixion.[1][2][3][4]

St

St. Peter's crucifixion, on an inverted cross

Besides the Son of God, many saints are also associated with crosses, with some of the early martyrs being crucified in a similar manner, though a number chose to die on a different type of cross (considering themselves unworthy of dying in the exact same way), such as St. Peter and St. Andrew, with these crosses becoming their symbols.[5][6]

Other cross variants, some including the shape of the standard Christian cross (also known as the Latin cross),[7][References for cross variants including standard?] include the Calvary cross, the equal-armed cross, the pyramid cross,[8] the Maltese cross,[8][7] the Saltire (also known as St. Andrew's Cross (アンデレ十字 Andere Jūji?)),[9][7][6] the inverted Latin cross (St. Peter's cross),[5] the patriarchal cross, the papal cross,[7] the Celtic cross,[10][7][11][12] the Germanic cross,[13] and the Rose Cross.[14][15][16] A red cross is associated with St. George and from there, the Anglican Church.[17][18]

One notable pre-Christian cross is the Ankh, a protective symbol of ancient Egypt, with a looped handle on top.[citation needed] Thor's hammer Mjölnir also corresponds to the shape of the cross.[19]

Physical objects in the shape of the cross, also referred to as a cross (十字架 Jūjika?), are prevalent throughout Christianity with many Christians having a small one, often worn on a necklace, rosary, or a string around the neck,[1][Multiple references][20] and larger ones are present in most churches.[1][21][citation needed] There is also a variant with a figure representing the Son of God attached to it, referred to as a crucifix.[citation needed] There are numerous crosses which are used as magical tools and spiritual items,[1] with the Croce di Pietro being a notable one.[22][23][5] Some Walking Churchs are in the form of a cross (such as Himegami Aisa's Celtic Cross (ケルト十字架 Kerutu Jūjika?)).[10][11][24][12]

Aside from physical symbols and inscriptions,[Physical symbol references][6] one can improvise a cross shape with positioned objects,[25][26] or trace the symbol in the air or the body with fingers, referred to as "crossing oneself".[27][23][28][29]

Crosses are featured in the flags of various countries (including those of the United Kingdom and the four comprising it),[citation needed] heraldry,[citation needed] and in magic circles and symbols,[References for use in magic circles][30] including the Banner of the West, a prominent symbolic weapon in modern Western magic.[31]

Aside from being separate symbols or components, crosses act as joints in a battle formation,[8] and intersections in magical symbols.[30] They can be used to gather, direct and scatter power,[8] and when properly used can interfere with and turn the power of an opponent's spell against them.[30] One magician who uses crosses primarily in this way is John William Brodie-Innes (or at least his reproduction), who makes use of sparks produced by striking the ground with his metal-soled shoes to form the shapes of various crosses, being able to weave greater formations the more time he is given.[8]

Like the Sephiroth, the cross is a symbol which corresponds to the human body and can be utilized in magic as blueprint for the body and soul.[13][32][19]

During the incident surrounding Orsola Aquinas and the Book of the Law, the crosses worn around many necks and in most churches symbolizing the cross on which the Son of God died and able to possess a tiny fraction of the original's power was mentioned during an explanation of Idol Theory,[1] and variations of the cross (such as the Latin, Celtic, Maltese, St. Andrew, Patriarchal and Papal crosses) were mentioned during a conversation between Kamijou Touma and Orsola.[7] Tatemiya Saiji wearing the red cross of St. George, the symbol of the Anglican Church, on his shirt was also mentioned, with regards to his intentions, by Kanzaki Kaori when talking to Touma after the incident.[17]

Most notably, a regular Anglican cross was given to Stiyl Magnus by Archbishop Lola Stuart,[35][17] which was later passed onto Touma,[36] who then placed the cross around Orsola's neck.[7] As the act of putting an Anglican cross on someone places them under the protection of the Anglican Church and effectively one of their own, it was used as justification for the Anglicans rescuing Orsola from the Agnese Forces, against the argument that the matter was an internal affair of the Roman Catholic Church.[37][17]

The magic-related events which transpired during the first day of the Daihaseisai revolved around a notable cross associated with St. Peter, the Croce di Pietro.[23][5] During these events, a misunderstanding from the sight of Himegami Aisa's Walking Church cross resulted in her being severely injured by Oriana Thomson.[11][24][12] It was also noted that the red cross (associated with St. George and the Anglican Church) on Lidvia Lorenzetti's clothes had caused her to mistaken be for an Anglican in the past.[18]
