The system of {{Nihongo|'''Enochian Magic'''|エノク魔術|Enoku Majutsu}} is based around {{W|Enochian}}, said to be an ancient [[Angel|angelic]] language,<ref name=ShinyakuV22Ch3Pt1/> and often involves the invocation of such beings.
Two keys parts of the Enochian magical system are the Elemental Tablets and the Aethyrs. In Enochian traditions, a diagram of the world's spiritual territories<!--by Dee--> depicts a square at the center, comprised of the four tablets/watchtowers contained with a tablet of union, surrounded by 30 concentric circles representing the Aethyrs, with the 30th being the innermost and the 1st being the outermost. A set of invocations, referred to as 'calls' and often referred to as the Secret Calls, are used to access the powers and angels of the Tablets or the Aethyrs.

Enoch (エノク Enoku?) is a term that is used within the Toaru series to refer to the Enochian system of magic and beliefs,[1][2] based around a supposed angelic language.[3][4][5]

Etymology

Enoch is a name in the Bible used to refer to two characters, first being the son of Cain, and the other, the ancestor of Noah. The system, and the language it is based on, is named after the latter due to assertions that Enoch was the last human to know the language (before Dee and Kelley).

Enochian language/magic

The system of Enochian Magic (エノク魔術 Enoku Majutsu?) is based around Enochian, said to be an ancient angelic language,[3] and often involves the invocation of such beings.

Enochian

The characters of the Enochian language

The Enochian language has its own alphabet, with several different forms of script. Enochian glyphs often have English letter equivalents, however while some of their names are pronounced the same, many are pronounced differently.

Two keys parts of the Enochian magical system are the Elemental Tablets and the Aethyrs. In Enochian traditions, a diagram of the world's spiritual territories depicts a square at the center, comprised of the four tablets/watchtowers contained within a tablet of union, surrounded by 30 concentric circles representing the Aethyrs, with the 30th being the innermost and the 1st being the outermost. A set of invocations, known as 'calls' and often referred to as the Secret Calls, are used to access the powers and angels of the Tablets or the Aethyrs.

The usage of Enochian magic involving the Aethyrs and the Secret Calls has been noted to fall within the Aeon of Horus.[6]

Tablets

This section requires expansion
Elemental/unified tablets, watchtowers, Dee/GD

An important part of Enochian magic are the tablets or watchtowers, which a large number of the angels involved in the Enochian system are associated with. There are four tablets or watchtowers, which are associated with the four elements and these are further divided into four sub-sections for each of the elements.[3][7] There is a fifth tablet of unification which encompasses these four tablets and represents the colorless fifth element.[6] Powers and angels within the scope of the tablets can be accessed via the Secret Calls.[3][7][6]

The four Elemental Tablets, contained within the tablet of unification, are depicted as a square at the center of an Enochian diagram of the world, surrounded by the concentric circles representing the Aethyrs, with the 30th Aethyr, TEX, the lowest being the innermost and closest to the tablets.

Aethyrs

This section requires expansion
Individual Aethyrs

The Aethyrs (アイティエール Aitiēru?) are 30 planes of the world's spiritual territory, which play a major role in Enochian magic.[8][5] Each of the Aethyrs has an angel associated with and residing within it.[9][8][10]

Depicted as concentric circles surrounding the square of the tablets on an Enochian diagram of the world, the Aethyrs are numbered from 1 to 30, with the 30th being the lowest and innermost, closest to the tablets, and the 1st being the highest and outermost. In a similar yet different fashion to the Sephiroth in Kabbalah, practitioners can travel through the Aethyrs as part of their spiritual training and advancement.

According to Mina Mathers, in reference to Coronzon's usage of her hair to spell out Enochian text and weave it into Aethyr Avatars - images of the respective Aethyrs' angels, dividing the spiritual territory spoken of by Enoch into 30 regions, the Aethyrs, using written text provides a color palette for easier use of the supernatural.[8]

Secret Calls

In order to draw upon the powers and angels connected to the Elemental Tablets, there are invocations known as calls (召喚文 Shōkanbun?), collectively referred to as the Secret Calls.

In order to invoke certain powers or angels, specific calls need to be invoked in the right sequence. For example, if the target is of a sub-element from one of the Elemental Tablets that is different from the tablet's main element (e.g. water of wind), the call for that specific tablet comes first (e.g. the Third Call for the wind tablet) followed by the call for the sub-element (e.g. the Seventh Call for 'water of wind').[7] Others only require one call; for example, when invoking 'fire of fire', only the Sixth Call is needed.[3]

In addition to the standard eighteen Secret Calls, there is a nineteenth Secret and Unrecorded Call, believed to correspond to the Aethyrs.[5]

# Name Notes
1 The First Call Used to invoke from the tablet of unification which contains the other four tablets.[6]

Coronzon made use of the First Call, invoking the whole tablet of unification and the colorless, nameless element.[6]

2 The Second Call Used following the First Call for certain parts of the tablet of unification.
3 The Third Call Used to invoke from the wind tablet, it is the sole call used for wind of wind, and the first for the other sub-elements of the wind tablet, followed by the Seventh, Eighth or Ninth Call.

Coronzon made use of the Third Call, invoking IDOIGO and wind of wind.[7]

4 The Fourth Call Used to invoke from the water tablet, it is the sole call used for water of water, and the first for the other sub-elements of the water tablet, followed by the Tenth, Eleventh or Twelfth Call.
5 The Fifth Call Used to invoke from the earth tablet, it is the sole call used for earth of earth, and the first for the other sub-elements of the earth tablet, followed by the Thirteenth, Fourteenth or Fifteenth Call.
6 The Sixth Call Used to invoke from the fire tablet, it is the sole call used for fire of fire, and the first for the other sub-elements of the fire tablet, followed by the Sixteenth, Seventeenth or Eighteenth Call.

Coronzon made use of the Sixth Call, invoking RZIONR and fire of fire,[3] and supplementing it with a follow-up incantation invoking the Fire Tablet itself.[3]

7 The Seventh Call Used to invoke water of wind following the Third Call.[7]

Coronzon made use of the Seventh Call, invoking LILACZA and water of wind.[7]

8 The Eighth Call Used to invoke earth of wind following the Third Call.
9 The Ninth Call Used to invoke fire of wind following the Third Call.
10 The Tenth Call Used to invoke wind of water, following the Fourth Call.
11 The Eleventh Call Used to invoke earth of water, following the Fourth Call.
12 The Twelfth Call Used to invoke fire of water, following the Fourth Call.
13 The Thirteenth Call Used to invoke wind of earth, following the Fifth Call.
14 The Fourteenth Call Used to invoke water of earth, following the Fifth Call.
15 The Fifteenth Call Used to invoke fire of earth, following the Fifth Call.
16 The Sixteenth Call Used to invoke wind of fire, following the Sixth Call.
17 The Seventeenth Call Used to invoke water of fire, following the Sixth Call.
18 The Eighteenth Call Used to invoke earth of fire, following the Sixth Call.
19 The Secret and Unrecorded Call A nineteenth call, separate from the other eighteen calls. There is disagreement among researchers as to whether only angels can see the text, if it points to all thirty Aethyrs and what the call's effects are.[5]

Coronzon made use of the Secret and Unrecorded Call, speaking a name (*********) which couldn't be pronounced by humans from the demonic face on her hair. When the magic was sent to the unlocked Anti-Art Attachment for a surprise attack from behind, one of the weapon arms emitted a rainbow-colored beam of light to sever Kamijou Touma's right arm at the shoulder. This action also inadvertently broke the seal on the entity lurking behind the Imagine Breaker.[5]

Enochian Chess

Enochian Chess is a four-player chess variant developed by founders of the Golden Dawn and incorporated into their magical system. Used for competition and divination, the game has four differently colored sets of pieces corresponding to the four elements, with pieces identified with Egyptian deities (the king for Osiris, the queen for Isis, the knight for Horus, the bishop for Aroueris and the rook for Nephthys). The board is multi-colored, divided into four sub-boards with one of the four elemental colors dominant in each - corresponding to the Elemental Tablets.

Background

The Enochian system of magic is derived from the writings of John Dee and Edward Kelley in the late 16th century,[15][10] based on a supposedly angelic language.[3][4]

Enochian elements were among the various components which were incorporated into the Golden Dawn's magical system.[2] One of the cabal's founders, Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, played Enochian chess.[16]

Main article: Coronzon Arc

Enoch was referred to during the events surrounding the reproduced Golden Dawn,[18][16][2] and chess pieces based on Egyptian deities (most likely Enochian chess pieces) were used for magic.[19] Coronzon also made use of Enochian magic during the events surrounding her attempt to perform the Ceremony of Mo Athair, including Aethyr Avatars formed from her hair and Secret Calls.[20]
