HsAFH-11

The Six Wings carrying out an attack

The HsAFH-11, also known as Six Wings (六枚羽 Rokumai Hane?, Yen Press: Hexawings) is an unmanned attack helicopter that is used by Academy City's air defense unit, the Air Superiority Preservation Control Center.[1] It is the predecessor of the similar-looking Four Wings.[2]

Principles[]

The Six Wings is a state-of-the-art weapon manufactured by Academy City, costing about 24 to 25 billion Japanese Yen.[3] Similar to the AH-64 Apache, it has one "wing" on either side of the craft with guns and equipment mounted on them. With a top speed of Mach 2.5 or 3,000 kilometers per hour,[4] its wings have two rocket engines installed on them for auxiliary power.[3]

They are called Six Wings because the wings on each side of the aircraft can split into three. The thin wings have joints and can move like human arms, allowing them to maneuver their weapons in difficult angles.[3] However, the aircraft can only use its rocket engines when the wings are not separated, as doing so would damage the joints due to the wind pressure damage exerted on them. As such, it can only fly at about 300 to 400 kilometers per hour with its "six wings" open.[4] Due to its unique design, people like Hamazura Shiage doubt that the HsAFH-11 can still be called a helicopter.[4] However, since it is still an aircraft that creates lift with the rotor on its vertical axis and moves using the angle of that rotor, it is still technically qualifies.[3]

As they are unmanned, the Six Wings use their onboard AI to confirm the presence of their enemies - only when they are in automatic attack mode will they deploy their "six wings".[3]

The vehicle has a visible air intake for its engine as it needs air to react with the fuel to create energy. If a foreign object was brought in there, the engine would stall causing the helicopter to crash, so there are countermeasures such as the downward wind created by the rotor and a wire mesh that is installed over the intake prevent debris from being sucked in.[4]

Weapons[]

Other than the machine guns they carry as conventional weaponry, the aircraft can also fire other projectiles. The helicopters use surface attack missiles,[3] as well as short ranged anti-armored vehicle missiles called SRM-21s that use an infrared sensor to lock on targets.[4]

It can also use a softball-like projectile, apparently intended as a counter against anti-aircraft missiles. These projectiles then spray out iron sand which is followed by a high-voltage electric current. The electrified field extends 20 meters in every direction and will cause any missiles coming into contact with it to explode.[3]

Flame Crash[]

The HsAFH-11 can also use a unique bullet known as Flame Crash (摩擦弾頭フレイムクラッシュ Masatsu Dantō (Fureimu Kurasshu)?, lit. "Friction Warhead", Yen Press: frictional bullet tips). The bullets are made of extremely heat resistant metal and have special grooves carved into them so that air friction heats them up to 2,500 degrees when they are fired. When the bullets pierce armor, they burn away any electrical circuits and fuel behind or inside them. When fired in large amounts, the bullets can envelope large areas in flames.[3]

Background[]

While it isn't known how long the Six Wings have been in operation, they were in use in Academy City at least one year prior to the main story.[5][6][7]

HsAFH-11 mow down the crowd

The Six Wings firing, mowing down the mercenaries

On October 9th, the Air Superiority Preservation Control Center deployed the helicopters after it detected a disturbance in School District 11, deliberately caused by Etzali, as mercenaries hired by Block were entering the city over the outer wall, skipping through their standard procedure due to the special condition of communications to Hikoboshi II being down. Using their Flame Crash bullets and other weapons, they were easily able to slaughter at least 4,500 mercenaries, leaving only about a hundred of them for Block to use after they retreated.[3][8]

Etzali himself was found by one of them, and though he used his Spear of Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli to destroy one of them, two others detected his presence and gave chase. He was saved by the intervention of Accelerator who destroyed them easily.[3] After determining that the operation was complete, the remaining aircraft left School District 11, though they left a few survivors, allowing Group to interrogate one of them to reveal Block's plans using the mercenaries.[9][8]

The Six Wings in pursuit

Hamazura Shiage and Kinuhata Saiai were chased by a Six Wings after stealing a family car. Although they were perplexed as to who would go out of their way to use a state-of-the-art weapon against them, they set aside their suspicions and tried to find a way to survive against it. After Hamazura was lectured about its capabilities, the helicopter fired a short ranged missile at them that used infrared sensors to lock onto its target, but Kinuhata's quick thinking in using a smoke grenade as a dummy, like a flare, for its infrared sensors, resulted in it hitting the decoy instead of the car.

With no options left and the likelihood of the helicopter using machine guns, Kinuhata ordered Hamazura to drive a straight as she lent outside of the car (showing her panties to Hamazura in the process), reassuring him about her plan though he was worried about her decision and bothered by her brazen display. She used a bullet made of a papier-mâché-like material to shoot the helicopters air intake. Despite the machine's countermeasures for debris entering the air intake, the bullet entered it after breaking into dust, causing the helicopter to begin losing lift and the engine to explode. The helicopter exploded after crashing near the car, causing the two to be separated.[4][10]

The Six Wings head towards the scene of the fire.

Due to the explosion and fire caused by Wanigawa Raifu at a parking garage, a group of Six Wings were dispatched and arrived as Raifu resumed her battle with Misaka Mikoto at the city wall. As Raifu scaled the wall, the Six Wings commenced their attack, but their shots were redirected by Raifu towards Mikoto who intercepted them. Raifu then caused several of the helicopters to fall towards Mikoto, who destroyed them with railgun shots.[11][12] The last one was intended as bait to allow Raifu to use her ability to redirect Mikoto's attack back at her, but Mikoto realized in time and reduced her power to avoid a full-on strike.[12]

During the High Priest's rampage through Academy City in pursuit of Kamijou Touma, a unit comprised of Six Wings and Ten Legs are dispatched to fight against him but are soon decimated. After Misaka Mikoto prevented one of the downed Six Wings from hitting members of Anti-Skill, Touma briefly made use of its rotors and a cable from another destroyed vehicle against the High Priest, in a manner similar to the method of torture known as 'The Helicopter', before resuming his escape.[13]

Trivia[]

  • Going by the patterns for Academy City's weapon naming schemes, HsAFH likely stands for a full designation including Hard Science, an unknown abbreviation (AF, which may stand for Air Force, or the A may stand for "Attack" or "Armed" like in attack helicopter) and Helicopter.
