Dark Justice Arc[]

Main article: Dark Justice Arc

On August 29th, one year before the main story, Judgment Branch 000 hired the Frees to gather information on Item and Sadistic Dolls, who had been marked for death by the execution squad following the incident with the Ark of the Electronic Sea, who had murdered Judgment member Minamioki Sarusa.[3] However, instead of merely observing the targets, the Frees assassinated the last survivor of the Sadistic Dolls themselves for the group's crimes, as they were fleeing the group's destruction at Item's hands at Moe Bells.[4][3]

Early the next morning, on August 30th, the group were disposing of evidence while continuing observation of Item in School District 3, sure that their involvement in the murder would not be traced.[5] However, the group's photographer and writer, Kagiyama Sasuke and Saetani Melusine, unwittingly ended up in close proximity to Mugino Shizuri and Takitsubo Rikou, were roped into Item's own investigation and subsequently exposed, leading to their deaths.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] At the same time, the group's drone operator Amekawa Souji was killed by detective Shiratori Okibi, who was also investigating the case.[12][3] The Frees had not conveyed the information they had gathered to Branch 000 before their deaths.[13]

Name Role Details
Kagiyama Sasuke (鉤山佐助 Kagiyama Sasuke?) Photographer[1] A middle school boy whose esper ability was Bind Scoop (呪縛激写バインドスクープ Jubaku Gekisha (Baindosukūpu)?), a psychological power that could physically bind a person he took a photo of, providing they met several conditions.[7][8] For it to work, the target had to be unaware they were being photographed, be looking at the photographer, and be caught in a compromising situation or the act of a personal scandal that they believed would be devastating if exposed.[7][8]
Saetani Melusine (冴谷=メリジェーヌ Saetani Merijēnu?) Writer[1] A part-French high school girl with blonde hair and wearing a gaudy suit,[5] her esper ability was Electro Reading (静電聴覚エレクトロリーディング Seiden Chōkaku (Erekutororīdingu)?, lit. "Electrostatic Hearing"), which allowed her to detect the sound of static electricity on a person's skin to predict the movement of their muscles and joints, and from that, their next action.[5][8] Due to the sound being extremely faint, she required a shotgun microphone to make any practical use of her ability, which would otherwise needed her ear to be pressed against her target's chest.[5]
Amekawa Souji (雨川創磁 Amekawa Sōji?) Drone operator[1] His esper ability was Remote Murder (対象斬撃リモートマーダー Taishō Zangeki (Rimōtomādā)?, lit. "Target Slashing"), which made it so that slicing or striking a target's shadow with a weapon would inflict the same damage to the target, regardless of whether it was Amekawa or another wielding the weapon.[8]
