The Freshmen Arc is the first story arc of Shinyaku Toaru Majutsu no Index. The arc occurs a few days after the end of the World War III arc, in the first half of November of the story's first year.[1]
Following the war's conclusion and the disappearance of Kamijou Touma, Accelerator and Hamazura Shiage have returned to Academy City, having seemingly freed themselves from the city's dark side and hoping to live their daily lives in peace. However they soon find themselves involved in a battle to protect a young girl called Fremea Seivelun from a group known as the Freshmen.
This is the first science side-only arc to be featured in Shinyaku Toaru Majutsu no Index. At the end of the arc, it is discovered that Kamijou Touma is still alive after Leivinia Birdway and the Dawn-Colored Sunlight found him in the Arctic Ocean. This segues to the Homecoming Arc where Birdway informs Touma and the others about the emergence of a new enemy, Gremlin.

Kamijou Touma[]
On the final day of World War III, Kamijou Touma was up against Fiamma of the Right in the Star of Bethlehem,[2][3] which began to collapse after Fiamma's defeat.[4][5] Touma helped secure an escape pod for Fiamma at the expense of saving himself,[5] and rejected a helping hand offered by Misaka Mikoto,[6] staying on the fortress in order to ensure a non-catastrophic landing.[7] After remotely seeing Index,[7] Touma performed steps needed to control the fortress's descent under Stiyl Magnus's directions,[8] but the threat posed by the re-emergence of Archangel Gabriel in the Arctic Ocean forced Touma to divert the fortress to land on the angel and hit it with Imagine Breaker, facing death once more.[9]
In the aftermath, Touma's whereabouts and survival were unknown to most of the people involved in these events.[9][10][1][11] In truth, he was saved and picked up from the sea by Leivinia Birdway and the Dawn-Colored Sunlight.[11]

The war started due to the machinery of Fiamma of the Right and Nikolai Tolstoy, both with different interests in mind. Tolstoy wanted to be the next patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, replacing Krans Tsarskiy, and believed that Fiamma would help him achieve his mission.[12] Tolstoy's plan collapsed during the war when Fiamma betrayed him.[13] This infuriated Tolstoy who in retaliation gave the order for the remaining Russian magicians to destroy the Star of Bethlehem.[13] Due to Tolstoy switching sides there was only one figure left that perpetuated the war, Fiamma.
But when Fiamma's mission failed, there was no reason for the war to continue on. Vasilisa managed to rescue Krans Tsarskiy after defeating the remaining Russian guards who kept him captive.[14] Tsarskiy, who's position as the head of the Russian Orthodox Church was reinstated, decided to declare an armistice of peace between Russia and Academy City, stating that he'd accept any conditions levied upon Russia. Thus ending the war.[15]
