Johann Valentin Andreae (ヨハン=ヴァレンティン=アンドレーエ Yohan Vuarentin Andorēe?) (also rendered Johannes Valentinus Andreae) (1586–1654 officially)[1] was a German abbot who claimed to have been the author of Chymische Hochzeit and inventor of the legends revolving around Christian Rosencreutz (CRC), which sparked the Rosicrucian movement.[2][3][4][5]

Having lost control and been eclipsed by his creation, ignored after confessing to the fraud, he sought to tarnish that legacy out of jealousy,[5] posing as CRC himself when the Bridge Builders Cabal attempted to summon Rosencreutz as their savior.[6][5]

Appearance[]

When posing as CRC,[5] brought into the world via the Bridge Builders Cabal's ceremony, Andreae had the appearance of a young man, about 18, with silver hair and a beard (though with the voice of an old man).[6] After being stripped of this guise, he appeared as a wrinkly and unkempt old man, described as nothing but skin and bones.[5]

He wore a red robe provided by Trismegistus,[6] with a variant of the Rose Cross on it.[7] He also wore a pentagonal pendant, with an emblem of red and white pentagons inside one another - similar to the one in the Rose Cross variant on his robes, and a red cloak with gold-orange lining.[7]

When posing as Christian Rosencreutz,[5] Andreae acted out a malicious persona completely different from the wise holy man of legend,[6][5] in an effort to tarnish his creation's legacy.[5]

Background[]

GT Index v11 BW3

Johann Valentin Andreae and Christoph Besold at the University of Tübingen.

Born in the late 16th century and living through the first half of the 17th century, Johann Valentin Andreae was an abbot in Germany, who wrote a false book describing an invented history revolving around the invented individual Christian Rosencreutz.[9][2][3][5]

According to this legend, Rosencreutz was said to be a 14th century German magician,[3] a wise holy man and healer who travelled around the world,[6] gathering knowledge and working miracles.[3][6] After this journey, Rosencreutz was said to have organized his knowledge into a form usable by ordinary people,[3] gathered seven disciples and founded the Rosicrucian Order,[6] meant to remain a secret for a hundred years after its establishment.[10] His corpse was said to have been buried in a seven-walled tomb,[10][11][2][12][13][14] later found undecayed by an explorer after 120 years.[15][13]

Andreae believed himself to be at the center of the movement that grew from his story, but his creation would end up leaving his control.[9][2][3][5] He would later confess to his lie,[9][2][3][5] claiming in his writings to have invented and distributed the Chymische Hochzeit when he was 19.[3] However, he was ignored, the Rosicrucian movement having by then grown into something more,[9][2] and would survive to the modern day, despite Andreae's claim that confessing to the prank ended the dream.[3] Envious and resentful of his creation eclipsing him, he would eventually seek to tarnish the legend of Christian Rosencreutz that he had created.[5]

"CRC" reaching Alice to crush her as Trismegistus watches helplessly.

On January 4th, Johann Valentin Andreae was summoned back into the world through the Bridge Builders Cabal's ceremony, which was intended to summon Christian Rosencreutz as their savior.[6] Posing as CRC, Andreae promptly floored the assembled Transcendents except Alice Anotherbible and then crushed the girl's head, acting the complete opposite of the legend in an attempt to tarnish his creation's image.[6][5] He then fought Anna Kingsford,[6][16] winning through a trick with Alice's corpse, and crushed a horrified Kamijou Touma when he arrived, knocking aside the Shrink Drink he was holding, before declaring his intention to wipe out the Transcendents.[16]

Despite his claim, Andreae remained in School District 12 for much of January 5th. He finished indulging himself in the evening and began a destructive march toward Heaven Canceller's Hospital in School District 7, where the comatose Anna Sprengel was, tearing through the defensive lines set up by Kamijou Touma's allies, the forces of Academy City and the Transcendents, in District 12, School District 23 and School District 18, with none of their attempts halting him.[17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]

"CRC" knocked down for the first time by the dragon unleashed by Kamijou Touma.

Eventually, as Andreae reached the ICU, after a final stalling effort by Aiwass and Aleister Crowley, Touma unleashed the entity behind Imagine Breaker as a last resort,[26][27][28] and despite the risk to his life, managed to overcome and defeat Andreae, with support from his allies at the end.[29][30][31][32]

As January 6th began, several hours after the battle at the hospital, Index and Othinus went to where Andreae had landed, with the intention of finishing him off before he had the chance to recover and go after Touma again, knowing that Touma would not be able to repeat the victory. However, he was surprised by a reviving but headless Alice Anotherbible and torn to pieces, being stripped of his guise as CRC and his life.[5]

Abilities[]

Although not the actual Christian Rosencreutz, the summoned Andreae was a powerful magician.[6][16][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][27][30][31][32] He was able to topple the assembled Transcendents of the Bridge Builders Cabal in a single attack (with the exception of Alice Anotherbible), in a way they couldn't understand and faster than they could react, an impact accompanied by a flash of light.[6] He was also able to apparently kill the likes of the exceptional Transcendent Alice Anotherbible, crushing her head,[6] though Alice's headless body would revive itself later.[5] When Anna Kingsford used elemental attacks against him, he was able to send the attacks to a different location before they could reach him.[16]

Aside from his magic, Andreae made extensive use of deception and misdirection.[8] He also made use of common tones, similar to those used by the Transcendents of the Bridge Builders Cabal.[6] Being similar to them, as a fake playing a role, Andreae was likely susceptible to the Shrink Drink that is meant to target the Transcendents,[5] as well as the side of Alice Anotherbible relating to waking up from the dream to reality at the end of the story, which she ultimately used to strip away his disguise, revealing his true story as she did so.[5] Given how he was revived, Aleister considered that he feared that Transcendents could rearrange the ceremony's process and symbols to kill him again, but it was not confirmed.[27]

He was even able to craft and insert an artificial phase in between the living world and Hell, which acted as a false hell and a resurrection device intended for himself, with the potential to return a single person to life.[33][48][54] As its creator, he could exert partial, but not complete, control over it.[51][52]

Rosicrucian Magic[]

Most of Andreae's magic was based around the legends of Christian Rosencreutz or connected to Rosicrucianism, created as a result of his fiction, in some way.[16][18][19][20][55][56][5] As with Rosicrucianism in general, some of these techniques included elements and influences from other systems, such as Kabbalah and alchemy, the latter described as a starting point for CRC's miracles.[30] Many are tied in some form to the paired symbol of the Rose Cross, as well as the red secret art (赤き秘法 Akaki Hihō?), and some of them are tied to symbols and colors with their origins within the land, such that being separated from the land's support by a phase shift would hamper them.[27][Notes 1]

Andreae utilized carbon-based magic, described as a rehash of St. Germain,[18][30][5] for basic attacks, using it to fire dense carbon (or rather diamond) bullets, primarily from his palm.[18][30][5] The diamond bullets (炭素ダイヤモンドの弾丸 Tanso (Daiyamondo) no Dangan?), resembling a black coal about the size of a golf ball with a luster on its surface,[30][5] were fired with a lethal amount of destructive force,[30][5] enough to take down a Transcendent-level opponent in a single shot,[6][18][19][27][30] and moving too fast for the naked eye to see.[30][19][27][30] Additionally, the diamond crystal was constantly growing at a rate too quick for Imagine Breaker to fully negate.[18][5] The carbon-controlling spell also had other applications (such as forcing an Anti-Skill officer to count on his fingers, crushing them in the process).[17][5]

Through his carbon-based magic, the red elixir or some another basis,[16][30][5] Andreae was able to manipulate the corpse of Alice Anotherbible (prior to her own resurrection) as a puppet for a surprise attack against Anna Kingsford.[16][5] When his arm was severed, Andreae made nearby rubble gather around and form a new arm to stop the bleeding with the command "Mend" (修繕 Shūzen?), described as repairing by creating something new rather than a resurrection that returned him to normal.[30] Specifically invoking the red elixir (赤き秘薬 Akaki Hiyaku?) that conquers disease and manipulates lifespan, Andreae made numerous inorganic items combine into a giant doll, though it was destroyed before it could do anything.[30] It isn't certain whether or not he could perform the secret alchemical art to create a human inside a still or grow artificial life inside crystal as Rosencreutz was said to be able to do.[30] He was also able to ignore a deadly, non-existent toxin in his bloodstream through some alchemical means, mentioning that all poisons and harmful substances can be converted into medicines and beneficial ones if properly handled.[30]

Another Rosicrucian technique connected to alchemy that Andreae used was the Citrinitas spell (which had previously been granted to Darris Hewlane by Anna Sprengel), derived from the third of the four stages, which produces a massive amount of yellow sand that dissolves and traps its victims into the sand as nutrients.[16][20][55][56][5][57][58][59] Unlike Darris's use of the spell, Andreae did not use a spiritual item as its core.[16][59] In his initial use, he instead mimed rocking something and verbally invoked the yellow symbol, symbolizing transformation beyond decomposition and with the role of fermentation.[16]

Utilizing the Rosicrucian symbol of clouds covering up wisdom and truth to keep it from being viewed by the unworthy, Andreae could explosively discharge a white steam and within the space covered by that cloud, not be hit by regular attacks even from point-blank range or with a dense scattershot filling the space (compared to trying attack the non-observable Schrödinger's cat), though it was ineffective against the Dragon Strike.[30] He was also able to use this control of clouds to disrupt that opponent's similar weather-based attack, blowing between two fingers to send one cloud at another, forcibly altering weather conditions and diverting a lightning strike.[30] When an interference method based on bloodstain patterns was used to draw out his own magic from his mind against him, Andreae applied a random encryption to the formed texts and magic circles to lock them so they couldn't be used, using the method Westcott coincidentally discovered by invoking the name Trithemius and moving his fingers.[30]

Spiritual Items[]

Andreae made use of various spiritual items, many of which are directly tied to the legend of Christian Rosencreutz and the rest tied to Rosicrucianism in one way or another.[16][27][30][60] For many of these tools, he brought them to his hands by either grabbing them out of thin air or miming holding them.[27][30][60]

One of Andreae's spiritual items derived from the legend of Christian Rosencreutz, was a transparent card, described as a crystal world map (水晶の世界地図 Suishō no Sekai Chizu?), made up of jigsaw-like pieces constantly changing their shape and number.[16] It is based on the perfect miniature model (縮小模型 Shukushōmokei?) of the world that Rosencreutz supposedly completed, accurately recreating all phenomena in a miniature garden, all things relating to the world's past, present and future, to calculate any answer desired.[16][24] It was described as useful for searching, but it only provided information that Andreae actively worked to search for, meaning that he could miss something, especially from a blind spot he hadn't considered.[32] It also doesn't work properly outside the regular world, such as in "hell",[34][36][46] and cannot be used to reproduce and review a purely fictional world.[34]

Aside from the world model, another item tied to the legend of the seven-walled tomb was an old glass lamp,[27][52] based on the undying flame said to have illuminated the vault.[27][12][61][13] The collection of energy contained within this eternal lamp (永劫のランプ Eigō no Ranpu?) is described as an inextinguishable light and releasing a small amount from the case turns a gentle glow into a crimson serpent of flame, which consumes all oxygen from the air and is capable of melting concrete.[27]

Against a wind produced by the wings of Coronzon which caused the surroundings to blacken and rot, he used a flask of red powder,[27] which when scattered and at the word "Revolution" (変革 Henkaku?) caused the black to vanish and the air to grow clean, described as full of negative ions and like deep in a forest. If not contained by a phase shift, it was said that it might have caused the city in the outside world to rot apart and be buried in trees.[27] Against Touma's dragon, he used a deck of Tarot cards,[30] fanned out in a full circle in mid-air and invoked by the secret spell of 'Rota'[30][13] (rearrangable to 'Taro' and thus convertable into the 78 cards indicating 10 spheres and 22 pathways).[30] With the cards invoked as the proper entrance to light pouring down from beyond the tree - from the Ain Soph Aur, Ain Soph and Ain, a beam of light was produced from the center of the card circle, which was capable of temporarily splitting the dragon's maw in two.[30] He also wielded a 1m long gold cross with rose vines wrapped around it as a physical weapon.[30]

He also used the Pneuma-less Shell previously used by Anna Sprengel,[18][60][50] drawing out the symbolism from items representing the oldest forms of types of death.[18][60] Grasping a mother device with a ruby shine corresponding to the female symbol of the red rose paired with the cross, Andreae was able to mass-produce and remotely activate multiple Pneuma-less Shells.[60]

Quotes[]

  • (Portion of Johann's long-winded speech after being summoned and decimating the Transcendents), "Have you no shame? Humanity, recall what it was that Adam ate and what it was he learned!! Humanity will not find perfection in this era. So the only way to claim equality with the other forms of life is to regress to the level of apes and return to nature. Even an ape that carelessly touches fire pulls back its hand and never repeats that mistake, meaning they are capable of feeling regret. A feat wholly beyond the abilities of humanity. Or what? Are you going to make me split my sides and laugh myself to death with that absurd claim that the special thought patterns not found in other life forms are just that important? Pff heh heh. I tell you that is a suicidal conclusion that wholly negates your own purpose. Cats and dogs feel familial love, birds and fish communicate with words, and ants and bees have a group society. Hee hee hee. Romance? What life form does not seek out reproduction? In fact, any life form that neglects to reproduce will be left behind by the currents of time. But if you tell me humanity has nothing that cannot be discarded with such shallow thinking, I have no choice but to believe you. ...Thus, the conclusion is far too simple: humanity has no purpose. I have considered the issue from every direction, both physical and psychological, but this old man feels no value in working myself to the bone to save mere humans."[6]
  • (Johann's lifelong promise to Kamijou Touma after having been jokingly mocked by him) "Boy. For as long as I live, this old man will never forget that grinning face twitching on the verge of exploding into laughter."[44]
  • (To Kamijou Touma, as Johann falls into the real hell) "Live a happy life, Kamijou Touma."[54]

Notes[]

  1. Aleister Crowley guessed that despite "CRC"'s claims of only needing himself, given legends of Christian Rosencreutz working with his seven disciples to build the House of the Holy Spirit and being placed into a special grave, he needed to pay attention to symbols or colors with origins in land, and that shifting phases to isolate him from the normal world and its rules, effectively transporting him to another world, would deprive him of the land's support (which Aleister compared to trying to use a phone's GPS on Mars). While this approach did manage to remove some functions and inflict a bleeding finger wound during an exchange of spells, it didn't hamper the diamond bullets.
