Level Upper Arc[]

The restaurant is introduced in the first episode where Shirai Kuroko and Misaka Mikoto are waiting for Uiharu Kazari, who wants to meet the legendary Ace of Tokiwadai. They are later asked to leave, as Kuroko was making a scene. Both later meet Uiharu and Saten Ruiko outside the restaurant.[1]
The restaurant is seen briefly when Mikoto, along with Kuroko, Saten and Uiharu are using a piece cloth to hide under so they can use it to properly tell scary stories to each other. Mikoto ends the session after hearing Saten's story of the stripping lady. They later end up discussing of urban legends, one in particular about an esper who can make other esper abilities not work against him, which catches Mikoto's attention.[2]
During the climax of Mikoto's battle with the AIM Burst where the Level Upper treatment program is being played all over Academy City, Item is briefly seen taking notice of the sound being played, though it is unknown whether or not they were in the same restaurant or were in another Joseph's.[3] In the Toaru Kagaku no Railgun manga, the scene is extended, with Item arguing over whether they can go to a public pool and the restaurant is replaced.[4]
Also in the manga, the restaurant is only seen once during the height of the Graviton bombings where Mikoto is complaining to Uiharu on why Kuroko is lecturing her about being a vigilante. This is also where Uiharu forgets to bring her Judgment armband, allowing Mikoto to impersonate being a Judgment member for the day.[5] The restaurant is replaced with the Julian Restaurant in the anime.[6]

In another anime-only scene, Mikoto goes into the restaurant hoping to meet up with Kuroko, only to meet up with her one-time enemies, the 4th-ranked Level 5, Mugino Shizuri and Frenda Seivelun. Though annoyed at the other's presence Mikoto and Mugino do not let their recent history boil over. However, their two sidekicks are willing to pick up the slack, Kuroko arrives and later argues with Frenda, eventually leading to both of them being scolded by Mikoto and Mugino respectively.[9]

The restaurant is featured in one of Volume 15's colored illustrations. However, the novels simply describe it as a restaurant during the scene where the restaurant is supposed to be used as the setting.[10] In the anime adaptation, Joseph's Coffee and Restaurant is featured after the attempted assassination of Oyafune Monaka by School.[11]
Toaru Majutsu no Index: Miracle of Endymion[]
- Main article: Toaru Majutsu no Index Movie: Miracle of Endymion
Just like in an episode of Railgun, Mikoto, Uiharu, and Saten are in the restaurant discussing the opening of the space elevator Endymion. Saten is listening to music, which attracts Misaka Mikoto's attention, and indicates that they have met before. Their peaceful conversation is rudely interrupted by the appearance of Shirai Kuroko and her antics.
Other Appearances[]
MMR: Motto Marutto Railgun[]
The restaurant is notorious in the specials as the site where Mikoto and the gang discuss their urban legends, anime and other Japanese media references as well as some fourth-wall breaking.
Trivia[]
- The restaurant's name appears to be a reference to the protagonist of the second arc of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Joseph Joestar, which was confirmed by Railgun editor Ogino Kentarou.[12] The first arc protagonist, Jonathan Joestar, is named after the real world Jonathan's Coffee and Restaurant chain.
