Touma loses consciousness, but wakes up in an abandoned car and discovers that Acqua saved him and Index. Acqua tells him that Fiamma of the Right, the leader of the alliance between the Roman and Russian churches, is seeking Imagine Breaker and Index. He also says that he's here to stop England's civil war to keep Roman Catholic influence over Europe expanding. Touma points out that Carissa has already succeeded in taking over, but Acqua says that her rule is fragile and then leaves. Index wakes up and the two of them soon reunite with the Amakusas. They head back to London via seaplane. During the flight, Tatemiya Saiji and Kanzaki Kaori report on the current situation regarding Carissa, Queen Elizard and the Anglican leader Laura Stuart. They tell him that Carissa has returned to Buckingham Palace to keep Curtana Original's power under control, so their plan is to force Curtana Original to overload and become unusable. This requires them to sneak into the subway and, due to the nature of the security, only Touma, Index and Villian can carry out this plan.
Touma later comes upon a carriage and Acqua of the Back defeating several knights. Touma's horror and fear at the sight of Acqua of the Back is later relieved after he shows Touma that Index is in the carriage. Despite this, Touma is still cautious of him, though Acqua of the Back is uninterested and notes how Folkestone is more dangerous than London. He then sighs and states that he was also surprised on how they took him down, but says that he was able to bypass it at the cost of becoming a normal Saint. Touma then questions what happened after the explosion, to which Acqua of the Back says that he saved him, leading to Touma questioning why. Acqua of the Back says that it would be easier to let Touma, the center of the disturbance surrounding the world to die, but says things have changed since they met. Acqua of the Back tells Touma of the true boss after his right hand, Fiamma of the Right, the leader of the alliance between the Roman and Russian churches, and says he is also after Index. He tells that to destroy Fiamma of the Right's plans it would be easier to kill him and Index, but says that he would rather destroy the cause of the disturbance and that two of them are mere accessories. He says that Fiamma of the Right can change his plans even if they are dead or spread meaningless destruction out of desperation. He then says that it is necessary to stop to the dispute happening in the United Kingdom, as it may increase the country's strength and lead to a chance to put a stop to the increase in Roman Catholic influence over Europe, and preventing Fiamma of the Right from carrying out his goal. Touma warns Acqua of the Back that Carissa and her Curtana Original with the knights have already taken control of the United Kingdom, though he is undeterred and remarks that her new order is fragile. With that, Acqua of the Back leaves, remarking he should go for an open attack.

Kamijou Touma is a boy who lives in a technologically-advanced city called Academy City, and has the ability to dispel anything supernatural - including his own luck.

The events of the series begin when Touma meets a girl known as Index Librorum Prohibitorum, resulting in his involvement with magicians and ultimately forcing him into the conflict between the Magic Side and the Science Side.

After meeting Index and losing his memories in the attempt to save her, Touma becomes acquainted with the Magic Side, and becomes increasingly involved with its various conspiracies as a result of Index living with him. The early part of the series has Touma pitted against enemies from both the Science and Magic Side, though mostly the latter. He deals with standalone enemies and makes allies in the process. As the series progresses and as Touma continually aids his allies from Necessarius due in part because of Index, Touma earns the ire of the Roman Catholic Church, which becomes one of his regular enemies in subsequent story arcs. Finally, after continually being in the center of the failures of the Church's plans, God's Right Seat, a powerful organization deep inside the Roman Catholic Church, is introduced. Vento of the Front is sent against him in an attempted invasion, resulting in the breakdown of relations between Academy City and the Church.

The next few stories involve Touma becoming increasingly drawn into the conflict between the Church and Academy City and its effects on the world. After fighting against Terra of the Left and barely struggling against Acqua of the Back, Touma is sent by Tsuchimikado Motoharu to England where he becomes involved in a coup d’état (started by England's second princess Carissa in order to protect England from the incoming war between Academy City and the Roman Catholic Church). After Touma helps thwart the coup d’état, Fiamma of the Right, leader of God Right Seat's, appears before his eyes and takes control of Index's John's Pen Mode. This event leads to the start of World War III.

Angered, Touma goes to Russia to beat Fiamma, alone at first but later accompanied by Lessar. Here he again meets Accelerator, who has fallen into despair (having heavily injured Misaka Worst and believing he has failed in saving Last Order), and once again they fight. Touma completely dominates him and helps him back into the path of hope. Eventually, Touma is able to fight Fiamma of the Right in earnest after aiding in stopping Archangel Gabriel. Despite his Imagine Breaker, Touma is no match for Fiamma's power and his right arm is ripped off. However, in the brink of defeat an invisble thing appears from Touma's stump and strikes fear into Fiamma's heart. However, Touma does not rely on this power and forces to it to return, also regrowing his arm and regaining Imagine Breaker. With the aid of the whole world wishing to end the war, Touma shows Fiamma of the Right the folly of his beliefs and beats him. As the flying fortress that was the stage of their battle crumbles, Touma sends Fiamma of the Right off with the last escape pod. Archangel Gabriel becomes a threat once again, but through the use of the flying fortress controls, Touma steers it into the angel. Touma plummets with the flying fortress into Gabriel's path and manages to send it back where it came from, but is swallowed by the cold Arctic Ocean. There it is stated that Touma once again welcomes death.

This article provides the chronological history of Kamijou Touma as he appears in the original Toaru Majutsu no Index series.

Index Arc

Toaru Majutsu no Index E01 13m 23s

Touma destroying Index's Walking Church.

After being chased by a group of thugs for trying to save a girl, he finds himself confronting the same girl, who is actually one of the most powerful espers in Academy City named Misaka Mikoto. It turns out that he was trying to save the thugs from her instead and, after enraging Mikoto, he puts his ability to the test by canceling Mikoto's lightning.[8]

The next day, Touma meets a person in a nun’s habit who is hanging on the balcony of his boarding house.[9] The nun, named Index, claims to be a magician who possesses 103,000 grimoires and is currently being pursued. Touma is initially sceptical of the existence of magic. He brings up his Imagine Breaker and claims that it can negate even the power of God, which Index is sceptical of. Index claims that her robe, the Walking Church, has defensive spells which she can use to prove magic's existence. This leads to Touma touching her robe to check if it really contains supernatural power, destroying the robe and angering Index into biting him.[10] Index is forced to reassemble her robe using safety pins. Touma then leaves to go to school and offers to let Index stay in his apartment. Index turns his offer down, however, because of her current problems with magicians.[11]

Touma goes to school for a supplementary lesson, together with his teacher Tsukuyomi Komoe and his classmate Aogami Pierce. During the lesson, he thinks about the strange girl in his apartment.[12]

After the lesson ends, Touma walks back home and runs into Mikoto again. They argue and Touma makes fun of her. Mikoto releases electricity which destroys nearby electronics, forcing the two of them to flee the scene. They fight again, with Touma negating Mikoto's attacks and eventually using a bluff to make her back off. He heads to a restaurant to eat, then returns home.[12]

However, when Touma returns, he sees that Index is badly injured, and one of the magicians of the Church of Necessary Evil, Stiyl Magnus, appears. Still reveals that Index stores the grimoires in her memory and acts hostile towards Touma. They fight, with Touma negating all of Stiyl's spells except Innocentius, a being made out of fire which his ability cannot dispel so easily.[13] Index enters a strange state called John's Pen Mode and advises Touma to destroy the runes that allows Innocentius to operate. Touma resourcefully uses the building’s sprinkler system to wash the ink from Stiyl’s runes, allowing him to easily dispel Innocentius and beat up Stiyl.[14]

Touma brings Index to Komoe, the only person he can think of who can be taught to cast magic. Index manages to heal her wounds with Komoe's help.[15] Several days later, Touma and Index head to a public bath, with the latter revealing that she has no memories from the past year when she came to Japan. This starts an argument that leads to Index running ahead to the bath.[16]

After being separated from Index, Touma is caught in a trap by another magician, Kanzaki Kaori. Unlike the battle against Stiyl, he is at a disadvantage, as Kanzaki uses only physical attacks instead of magic. He is quickly defeated by her, and he demands an explanation for Index's hardships.[17] Kanzaki explains that she and Stiyl must erase her memories for her to live, otherwise her brain would become overloaded with memories and she would die. Touma rebukes them for ignoring Index’s feelings and tries to continue fighting, eventually falling unconscious.[18]

Three days later, Touma wakes up in Komoe's apartment.[19] Stiyl and Kanzaki visit briefly to reveal that it's nearly time for Index's memories to be erased.[20] That night, Kanzaki calls Touma to advise him to say goodbye to Index. Touma argues with her, trying to convince her to use science to help Index, but she is unmoved and hangs up. Touma then tries calling Komoe for help, but it's too late as midnight, the time for Index' memories to be erased, has arrived.[21]

Touma getting his memories destroyed.

Stiyl and Kanzaki arrive. Touma tries appealing to them one last time, without success. However, they do give him ten minutes alone with Index for their final farewells. After talking with Index, Touma thinks about the situation and spots an inconsistency, so he calls Komoe again. He discovers that the Church was lying to Stiyl and Kanzaki about Index’s memories, as the human brain can naturally store 140 years of memories. Touma also discovers the spell that bounds Index’s death if her memories are not erased and negates it. This forces Index into John’s Pen Mode and makes her attack Touma with powerful magic. Kanzaki and Stiyl rush into the room and are shocked at the sight, but are convinced to help. During the battle, a stray shot destroys a certain satellite in space. Touma is eventually faced with a choice: to dispel the spell controlling Index, or to negate the magical feathers that Index is attacking him with. He chooses the former and succeeds in saving Index, but one of the feathers touches his head.[22]

After a night of recovery in a hospital, Touma meets Index again. He initially acts as if he has amnesia, then claims that this was a trick and he'd actually negated the feather's damage before it reaches his brain. Index gets angry and bites him again, then leaves. The doctor Heaven Canceller enters and talks to Touma, revealing that he actually does have amnesia. He only knows what happened because Stiyl and Kanzaki told this to the doctors who then passed the information on to him. He lied to Index because he didn't want to make her cry. He tells the doctor that even though his memories are gone from his brain, they are still in his heart.[23]

Deep Blood Arc

Main article: Deep Blood Arc

One hot summer day, Touma and Index discuss whether or not to have ice cream. They happen to meet Aogami Pierce. However, the ice cream shop is closed and so they end up having shakes in a fast-food restaurant. There they meet a girl wearing miko clothes.[24] She asks for money and claims to be a magician. Touma refuses to lend her money and Index argues with her for claiming to be a magician without proof. A group of men, who the girl claims are cram school teachers, appear and take her away.[25]

Later, Touma and Index find a cat which Index adopts and names Sphynx. The cat runs away, then Index notices a spell has been set up and decides to investigate. Touma discovers that it was Stiyl who set the spell up in order to lure Index away. Stiyl asks Touma for assistance in rescuing a girl from Misawa Cram School. As it turns out, Himegami Aisa is Stiyl's target, the same girl Touma previously encountered in the restaurant. Touma internally berates himself for not lending her money and thus causing her to be recaptured.[26]

Toaru Majutsu no Index E07 13m 17s

Touma "meets" Stiyl for the first time.

Touma brings Index back to the dorm and discovers that she has adopted the cat after all. [27] He reunites with Stiyl and they go to the school, with Stiyl explaining that the enemy is Aureolus Izzard, an alchemist.[28] They enter the school and discover a dying member of one of the Thirteen Knights of the Roman Catholic Church, who were sent into the school and defeated. Students walk out of a nearby elevator and Touma tries to call for help, but they don't respond. Stiyl explains that the school is subject to a magical "boundary" that prevents intruders from interacting with or being perceived by the students. Touma wonders how they can help the knight and Stiyl replies that he can no longer be saved. Touma gets angry at this, but Stiyl pushes past him and administers the last rites to the knight. The two of them move on.[29]

They arrive at a cafeteria on the fifth floor that is filled with students. An alarm system is triggered, allowing the students to see them and begin attacking using a replica of the Gregorian Chant. The two of them run away and Stiyl pushes Touma down a staircase as a decoy, causing them to get separated. Touma runs into a hostile female student, who is severely injured before his eyes (due to casting magic as an esper). He picks up the girl and continues fleeing, only to run into Aisa again.[30]

Aisa gives first aid to the girl. Touma tells her that he's here to save her. Suddenly, a badly wounded man calling himself Aureolus Izzard (actually a copy of the real Aureolus, who had just fought against Stiyl) approaches, dragging the bodies of injured students. He pierces the students with a magical dart that transmutes them into molten gold. Touma fights him, but a stray attack hits the injured girl and transmutes her into gold. Enraged, Touma attacks the copy until he flees,[31] then catches up to him and beats him severely. However, he eventually lets the copy go instead of killing him.[32]

Touma reunites with Aisa, who tells him that the person he fought was a copy. She also reveals that she's not being held against her will, she's here because Aureolus wishes to use her ability to save someone. Aureolus appears and wipes Touma's memories of what had transpired in the school.[33]

Touma finds himself outside the school and unaware of the reason he's here. He regains his memories when he touches his head with his right hand. He encounters the remaining Thirteen Knights who use the real Gregorio’s Chant to destroy the school (against Touma's protests), but it is miraculously repaired by the power of Aureolus' Ars Magna. Touma rushes into the school and finds that its students are all alive. He also discovers Stiyl, whose memories were also wiped, and punches him to restore his memories.[34]

They reenter the school to confront Aureolus, who has now captured Index. He reveals that he plans to turn Index into a vampire so that she gains an infinite memory capacity and no longer needs her memories erased to live. However, Stiyl points out that Touma has already saved Index and that his efforts were all in vain. Enraged, Aureolus attacks them, even killing Aisa when she tries to protect Touma. Touma dispels the magic on Aisa to save her.[35] He then duels Aureolus, countering all of his attacks. Stiyl asks why Aureolus needs Deep Blood if he has the reality-distorting power of Arc Magna, causing Aureolus to flay Stiyl alive in retaliation. Touma realizes that there is a flaw in Ars Magna, wondering why Aureolus didn't just command Index to be saved, but before he can do anything Aureolus slices his entire right arm off.[36]

Toaru Majutsu no Index E09 17m 33s

Touma having his right arm turn into a dragon by Aureolus.

However, Touma perseveres through this and laughs maniacally. He walks towards Aureolus while smiling and somehow dispelling all his attacks. Aureolus panics and loses control of his Ars Magna (also causing Stiyl to go back to normal). Touma tells him that his Ars Magna does not distort reality with his words but instead turns his thoughts into reality. A Dragon's head appears from Touma's stump and attacks Aureolus.[37]

Touma wakes up in Heaven Canceller's hospital again. Stiyl visits Touma and cuts apples for him. He states that Aureolus has lost all his memories and the capability to do magic and that he (Stiyl) changed his face and form before releasing him. Misawa Cram School has now been closed. Stiyl tells Touma that he was able to keep fighting only because his body was in shock from the pain of his arm getting sliced off. Touma gets irritated by this, believing that Stiyl is comparing him to Aureolus. Their conversation is soon cut short with the arrival of Index and Aisa. The latter asks Touma why he saved her, to which he replies: "I don't need a reason to save someone."[38]

In the light novel, it's also mentioned that the dragon's head may not entirely be the result of Ars Magna's powers, which leads to Touma wondering just what Imagine Breaker could be. Then Index interrupts his thoughts and asks about Aisa, cutting short his thoughts. He concluded that it doesn't matter if he has incredible power, as long as it can protect the girl in front of him right now he is satisfied.[38]

Sisters Arc

Main article: Sisters Arc

Touma tries to buy drinks from a certain vending machine, but the machine fails to dispense the drinks. Here he meets Misaka Mikoto for the first time since losing his memories. She gets angry and attacks Touma when he doesn't remember who she is. She offers to get the drinks by using her powers on the machine, but this causes it to short circuit and dispense many drinks (also triggering an alarm).[39] They run away and Mikoto hands Touma his drinks. Mikoto's friend Shirai Kuroko approaches to investigate the alarm and is surprised at Mikoto apparently meeting with a boyfriend. She teases Mikoto about this and then teleports away. Shortly afterwards, a girl appears who is identical to Mikoto. Touma thinks she is Mikoto's sister, unaware that she is actually Misaka 10031, a clone. Mikoto drags this girl away.[40]

While carrying the drinks from the vending machine to his dormitory, Touma loses his balance and falls to the ground, scattering the drinks. Here, Touma meets Misaka 10032 and mistakes her for 10031. She offers to help carry the drinks, which Touma eventually accepts. At the dorm they meet Tsuchimikado Maika and then Index and Aisa, the latter two trying to remove fleas from Sphynx. Misaka 10032 removes the fleas using her power and then leaves.[41]

Touma meets Mikoto again in the afternoon. She talks about how she hates people following the orders of machines (i.e. the supercomputer Tree Diagram) and then leaves.[42] Shortly after, he meets Misaka 10032 again, who has just found a black cat.[43] They go to a bookstore to learn more about pet care. Touma throws the cat to Misaka 10032, encouraging her to be friends with it despite the barrier of her powers, and heads inside.[44] But when he exits the store, Misaka 10032 is gone and the cat has been left behind.[45]

Touma searches around and finds, in a nearby alley, what appears to be her mangled corpse.[45] Horrified, he leaves the alley and calls Anti-Skill, but when they arrive the corpse is gone. Confused, Touma goes deeper into the alley and meets Misaka 10032 again. She reveals that she, along with the corpse he saw, are clones of Misaka Mikoto, though they do not reveal any more information as he does not know the access code.

Touma with clones

Touma surrounded by the Radio Noise clones.

[46]

Worried about Mikoto's involvement, Touma travels towards the Tokiwadai Dormitory, hoping to get some answers from her. She isn't there but Kuroko is, and she lets Touma into their shared room. They talk about Mikoto but are interrupted by the arrival of the Tokiwadai Dorm Supervisor, forcing Kuroko to hide Touma under the bed since she's unable to teleport him away. Kuroko talks with the Dorm Supervisor and later leaves with her, while Touma finds documents about the cloning project hidden in a stuffed bear underneath the bed. He learns that the clones are being killed by Accelerator, the #1 Level 5, in an attempt to raise him to Level 6. He leaves the dorm and searches for Mikoto.[47] He finds her by following the movements of the wind turbines, as Mikoto is causing them to move (despite a lack of natural wind) due to her power.[48]

Mikoto is sulking alone on a familiar steel bridge. Touma discovers that Mikoto accidentally gave her DNA Map for use of the experiment and she plans on sacrificing herself to disprove Tree Diagram's calculations, hopefully ending the experiment. Touma opposes this, angering Mikoto into attacking him, but he doesn't try to block her attacks.[49] After being shocked into unconsciousness, he wakes up in Mikoto's lap. He describes his plan to stop the experiment by defeating Accelerator himself, since Accelerator being defeated by a Level 0 would disprove the assumption behind the experiment (that Accelerator is the strongest esper).[50] He leaves the cat with Mikoto and runs towards the site of Accelerator and Misaka 10032's battle.[51]

Touma vs Accelerator

Touma defeating Accelerator.

Touma makes it just in time to disrupt the battle.[52] He challenges Accelerator, who attacks him in various ways and prevents him from getting close. Eventually, Accelerator decides to end the battle and charges toward Touma, allowing the latter to punch him. Accelerator is knocked down by this, causing Touma to realise that he is actually physically weak. Touma lands several more punches on him, but Accelerator eventually counters with a powerful gust of wind that knocks him out.[53] Accelerator begins creating a massive ball of plasma in order to finish him off. However, Mikoto arrives and convinces Misaka 10032 to ask the other clones to move the city's wind turbines, creating wind to disrupt the plasma.[54] Accelerator tries to attack them, but is interrupted by Touma regaining consciousness. Touma dodges Accelerator when the latter tries charging him again, then knocks him out with one last punch.[55]

Touma wakes up in the same hospital as before. He is visited by Misaka 10032, who reports that the experiment has stopped and she (along with the other clones) will need medical treatment to slow down their accelerated growth. She finishes by saying that they will meet again. Next to visit is Mikoto, who brings cookies as a gift for him. Touma dismisses the gift as he sees homemade cookies baked by someone incompetent to be better, which leads to an argument. Before Mikoto leaves, Touma reports to her that the sisters are going to have their bodies readjusted, and also reassures her by saying that the sisters are grateful to Mikoto for giving them life. Finally, Index visits and bites him out of anger. She asks what he was fighting for this time and he replies: "For myself."[56]

Angel Fall Arc

Main article: Angel Fall Arc
Touma and Touya

Touma is reintroduced to his father, Touya.

Due to defeating Accelerator, Touma has become the target of Academy City's delinquents (aiming to get glory by defeating him). He is forced to leave the city and go on vacation with Index, giving the authorities time to calm down the situation. He meets up with his family and they stay at a coastal beach house.[57]

Touma wakes up on August 28 to find that everyone else is acting in ways that don't match their appearance (e.g. Index is seemingly acting like his mother, while Aogami Pierce is acting like Index), which he thinks is one big prank. He looks at the news and hears about an escaped convict from a reporter who resembles Komoe. This leads him to suspect that it's more than just a prank.[57] He goes to the beach, where he encounters his friend Tsuchimikado Motoharu and also meets Kanzaki Kaori again. Kanzaki thinks that Touma is responsible for this incident, called "Angel Fall". Touma discovers that Motoharu is also a member of Necessarius, acting as its spy in Academy City. He learns from the two magicians about the nature of Angel Fall: it is a spell that has switched the appearances of almost everyone in the world (except for those with protection) and caused an angel to fall to earth. Kanzaki demands that Touma stop the spell and subjects him to a body search, but is eventually convinced to stop. Motoharu gets Touma to help solve the incident in exchange for being protected from any other magicians who come to investigate.[58]

That evening, Kanzaki meets with Touma's family. Touma discovers that his cousin (who has the appearance of Misaka 10032) has arrived. Kanzaki is seemingly angered when Touma's family mention her behaviour not matching her appearance (since they see her as Stiyl), and drags Touma off.[59] She asks him to guard her while she bathes, and reveals that she was actually unsettled by the sight of Index smiling at her. Motoharu comes by and apologises for not helping Touma in the previous incidents, so Touma forgives him. Motoharu then tries to get Touma to join him in peeking on Kanzaki, but Touma objects. Touma's mother and cousin arrive, causing Motoharu to leave, and they force Touma to take a bath with Kanzaki (reasoning that they're both male) before dinner gets cold. This results in Touma seeing Kanzaki naked, causing her to attack him.[60]

While alone, Touma views a report on Hino Jinsaku, the escaped convict. Jinsaku himself cuts the power and attacks Touma. A girl named Misha Kreutzev comes to Touma's aid. Jinsaku rambles on about an "Angel-sama" and this, combined with his appearance being retained despite Angel Fall, causes Touma to question his state. He eventually throws his weapon at Misha but it grazes Touma instead, and Touma falls unconscious due to it being poisoned.[61]

When Touma wakes up, Kanzaki and Motoharu explain that Misha is a magician of Annihilatus, part of the Russian Orthodox Church, and she also saved him by sucking out the poison from his wound. Misha threatens Touma with a saw, asking if he was the one who cast Angel Fall. Touma denies it and Kanzaki explains how he possesses an ability to negate magic. Misha attacks him with a water-based spell which he dispels, proving his innocence. At that moment, the son of the beach house owner interjects, revealing that he also saw Jinsaku. Coming to the conclusion that Jinsaku is the culprit (since his appearance wasn't switched), the magicians plan to apprehend him. Kanzaki asks Touma to take some rest. However, Touma instead spends the night stopping his father from doing anything to his mother (since Touma is disturbed by this happening to someone he perceives as Index), preventing him from getting any sleep.[62]

The next day, Touma discusses Jinsaku with the magicians. They eventually hear a news report showing that police have cornered Jinsaku in a house; Touma's house, to be specific.[63] They prepare a taxi to take them to the house, leading to Touma being briefly left alone with Misha. He offers her some chewing gum, which she accepts (without touching him) and likes.[64]

After riding the taxi, they sneak past the police and approach the house. Kanzaki leaves to set up a spell to prevent anyone seeing what they do next. During this time, Motoharu explains to Touma the nature of magicians, Kanzaki's issues and his own style of magic. Kanzaki returns and the group enter the house.[65] Touma and Motoharu become separated from the other two. Jinsaku attacks and they fight back, but are hindered by Jinsaku filling the house with gas (preventing them from doing anything that would make sparks). Motoharu eventually defeats Jinsaku. However, the serial killer claims to not know about Angel Fall. Touma deduces that Jinsaku actually has a split personality (this being the "Angel-sama" he talks about) and Angel Fall switched his two personalities while leaving his appearance unchanged.[66] He then spots a family picture revealing that his own father, Touya, hasn't had his appearance changed by Angel Fall (meaning he is the true caster). Misha heads off on her own to deal with Touya, while Touma is crushed by the revelation.[67] Motoharu tells Touma to head back to the beach with Kanzaki to protect Touya, while he (Motoharu) will remain to inspect the house).[68]

Touma insists on dealing with his father himself.[69] He confronts Touya on the beach and demands to know why he used magic. Touya talks about how Touma was bullied as a child due to his misfortune, causing him to reach into the occult in an attempt to stop this misfortune. Touma says that this isn't necessary since, despite all he's suffered, he considers himself fortunate for being able to help people. Touya reveals that he actually doesn't believe in magic himself and merely bought many lucky charms, confusing Touma. At that moment, Misha appears, followed shortly after by Kanzaki and Motoharu. It turns out that Misha is actually Archangel Gabriel, the angel called down by Angel Fall, who is using the appearance of a Russian Orthodox Church magician (whose real name is Sasha).[70] Kanzaki tells Touma to take his father away from the scene, as she will fight the angel. Though reluctant to let her fight alone, Touma complies.[71]

At the beach house, Touma discovers that his mother and cousin have been knocked out using chloroform. He urges his father to release Angel Fall, but Touya doesn't understand what he's talking about. Motoharu appears, explaining that he knocked out Touma's family and that Touya cast Angel Fall accidentally through the countless magical items in his house. Moreover, he claims that the only ways to stop the spell are to destroy the magic circle or to kill its caster, Touya. Touma tries to stop Motoharu but is easily beaten by the latter's martial arts skills. Touya tries to help and is beaten even more easily. However, Motoharu begins casting a spell despite the damage this causes to his body; it turns out that his real intention is to destroy the Angel Fall magic circle using his own spell. He succeeds, banishing Gabriel, but collapses afterwards.[72]

Touma wakes up in an Academy City hospital. He initially thinks that Motoharu is dead, only for his friend to casually enter the room. Motoharu explains that his esper ability, Auto-Rebirth, lets him use magic and survive. Motoharu mentions that Kanzaki is also alive and then brings up a more serious topic: who will bear responsibility for the Angel Fall incident? Touma is briefly concerned over what will happen to Touya, only for Motoharu to reveal that he will hide Touya's involvement. Motoharu casually mentions that Touma's house is destroyed (as there was no other way to destroy the magic circle) and leaves. Index enters next, and she punishes Touma for all of the abuse he did to her during Angel Fall (due to her having Aogami's appearance).[73]

In the anime, Touma experiences similar events but he never encounters the serial killer Jinsaku. Instead, Misha attacks him on the first day of Angel Fall and Motoharu and Kanzaki come to his rescue. On the second day, Touma realises that Misha avoids touching him after Touya points this out, leading to Motoharu and Kanzaki deducing that Misha may be the caster of Angel Fall. Touma and Motoharu go to the former's house and find the picture that proves Touya is the real caster. Shortly after, Touma's mother Shiina and Misha arrive, the latter also discovering the picture. Touma returns to the beach alone (since Motoharu is preoccupied with Shiina, who sees him as a famous idol), explains the situation to Kanzaki and then confronts his father.[74] The subsequent events are the same as the light novel.[75]

Three Stories Arc

Main article: Three Stories Arc

The three stories happen during August 31st.

The Aztec Magician

At midnight, Touma again gets into trouble with Index. He coincidentally notices his summer vacation homework, which he's forgotten to do thanks to recent events.[76]

Touma and Mikoto

Touma and Mikoto on a "fake" date.

That morning, Touma meets with his friends Motoharu and Aogami. Touma is worried about his homework, though the other two don't care.[77] Misaka Mikoto suddenly approaches and begs him to act as her boyfriend, to stop her admirer Unabara Mitsuki from following her.[78] Touma reluctantly goes along with this, also receiving help from Mikoto with his homework. However, he talks with Mitsuki himself (while Mikoto has gone to buy drinks) and learns that he's actually a nice person.[79] Mitsuki also helps Touma with his homework until Mikoto returns.[80] Later on, Mikoto sees the homework, which has only correct answers, and says that Mitsuki shouldn't be that smart.[81]

Lunch arrives, so Mikoto goes off to buy lunch for the two of them.[82] Mitsuki approaches Touma again and, after a short conversation, attacks him (revealing himself to be a magician who has stolen the real Mitsuki's appearance).[83] Touma flees and calls Index for advice on the enemy's magic. Using this advice, he fights the fake Mitsuki in an abandoned construction site and eventually succeeds in destroying his magical knife.[84] The fake Mitsuki continues fighting and reveals that he genuinely has feelings for Mikoto.[85] Eventually, the fake Mitsuki is pinned under steel beams and unable to fight any further. He asks Touma to promise to protect Mikoto.[86]

Yamisaka Ouma

Touma facing Ouma's attack.

Night falls. While still trying to catch-up with his homework (since the excursion with Mikoto and the fake Mitsuki distracted him), Touma goes to a restaurant with Index, intending to finish his homework there.[87] A magician named Yamisaka Ouma attacks and kidnaps Index.[88]

Touma chases after Ouma and, despite some distractions, catches up to him when he sees the light from a ceremony Ouma is conducting.[89] Touma comes in and destroys the ceremony. He offers to use his own power to help with Ouma's problem (a curse on a woman precious to Ouma; Index was kidnapped by Ouma so he could use her knowledge to break the curse). However, he does ask if he can go to get his homework first.[90]

Kazakiri Hyouka Arc

Main article: Kazakiri Hyouka Arc

It is now September 1, the start of the new semester. Touma is reluctant to go to school, due to his fatigue from the previous day, but he has no choice.[91] He runs into Mikoto and they get into an argument as they walk to school.[92] Touma parts with Mikoto and reaches his school, where he meets Komoe and then Aogami.[93] There is a new transfer student, Himegami Asia, but it also turns out that Index has come to the school because Touma didn't leave her lunch.[94] Komoe sends Index away with money to buy lunch. Touma decides to check on her and finds that she has made a new friend, a strange girl named Kazakiri Hyouka (but he accidentally sees them changing clothes, causing Index to bite him).[95] They converse, but Komoe arrives and scolds Touma for seemingly skipping the opening ceremony to flirt with girls. During the argument, Hyouka disappears.[96]

After Komoe has finished scolding him, Touma leaves the school and reunites with Index and Hyouka. They decide to go to an underground mall together. Before they go, Aisa approaches Touma and warns him that Hyouka is a mysterious student who is supposedly the key to the Imaginary Number District (the first research institute in Academy City).[97]

At the mall, they have lunch and visit various shops.[98] Touma receives a phone call from Aisa, who tries to tell him something about Hyouka, but the poor reception underground means that he doesn't understand.[99] Eventually, they are warned by a telepathic member of Judgement (whose telepathy was ineffective on Touma, and thus she had to explain the situation to his group verbally) to evacuate as there is a terrorist causing trouble. Touma and company try to comply, but the terrorist finds them using a spell and attacks.[100] Fortunately, Shirai Kuroko and Misaka Mikoto arrive to aid the civilians. There is an argument over who should be evacuated first (as Kuroko can only teleport two people at a time), eventually leading to Kuroko evacuating Index and Mikoto first. Touma decides to go off on his own to fight the terrorist.[101]

Touma finds the battered remnants of Anti-Skill. He moves past them to find the one responsible: Sherry Cromwell, a magician from the Anglican Church who uses an earth golem (named Ellis). An Anti-Skill member shoots at the golem in order to protect Touma. Unfortunately, Hyouka herself arrives at the scene and is hit in the head by a ricocheting bullet, revealing a hollow head. Horrified at this abnormality, Hyouka runs away, with Sherry in pursuit.[102] After some thinking, Touma decides to call Komoe for help and moves near an antenna, though Komoe calls him first. She explains how Hyouka didn't appear on the school's security cameras, then explains that Hyouka may be a product of the collective AIM diffusion fields of espers. Touma resolves to help Hyouka.[103]

Touma, Hyouka and Golem

Touma rescuing Hyouka.

Touma obtains Anti-Skill's help and proceeds to fight Sherry and her golem, while reassuring Hyouka that he doesn't care about her not being human.[104] Touma eventually reaches Sherry and punches her.[105] However, Sherry escapes by creating a tunnel and Touma realises that she is now going after Index.[106]

Touma can't get Anti-Skill to help him rescue Index since she isn't a citizen of Academy City. Hyouka therefore decides to act and she jumps into the tunnel.[107] Touma follows and he encounters Sherry, who has sent her golem ahead to attack Index. He asks why she's doing this and she explains that her friend Ellis (who the golem is named after) died in an experiment to create a magiicn-esper hybrid. She wants to prevent this happening again by starting a war to divide the Magic and Science sides. She tries to collapse the tunnel, but Touma forces her to stop by negating the magic circle she's using to keep herself safe. He knocks her out.[108] Touma then rushes to Index (who is safe thanks to Hyouka holding back the golem) and negates the golem.[109]

Touma carefull

Touma being careful not to touch Hyouka with his right hand.

With the battle over, Touma talks to Hyouka and reassures her that she's human regardless of her composition. Index appears and confirms that she still sees Hyouka as a friend by hugging her.[110] Touma visits Heaven Canceller's hospital, and during this visit Komoe talks to him about Hyouka. He then meets up with Hyouka and Index again. Hyouka tells Touma that his power is not an esper power and then disappears, though she says that she will always be with Index.[111]

Orsola Aquinas Rescue Arc

Main article: Orsola Aquinas Rescue Arc

This arc begins on September 8. After getting tired from preparing for the Daihasei Festival, Touma returns to his apartment. He encounters Tsuchimikado Maika, who tells him that Index has been kidnapped by a strange man (who Touma realises is Stiyl).[112]

Touma meets Orsola

Touma meets Orsola.

Touma follows a letter left behind by Stiyl to an abandoned theatre outside Academy city. Along the way, he comes across Orsola Aquinas, a nun from the Roman Catholic Church who is trying to hide in Academy City (and who, unknown to Touma, is the one Stiyl is looking for). Touma decides to take her with him.[113] They arrive at the theatre and meet Index, Stiyl and another Roman Catholic nun named Agnese Sanctis. Suddenly, Orsola is kidnapped by the Amakusa-Style Remix of Church.[114]

More Roman Catholic nuns arrive and, directed by Agnese, they search for Orsola. Touma is told the situation: Orsola is capable of decoding The Book of the Law, a dangerous grimoire, and the Amakusa have kidnapped her because of this.[115] Index explains how the Amakusa will try to escape using a magical portal, but said portal will only work at midnight (over four hours from now).[116] The Agnese Forces use this time to rest and prepare for the attack. Also during this period, Agnese runs into Touma while naked and then sneaks into his bed, both times causing Index to bite him.[117]

They then head to Parallel Sweets Wonderland, an abandoned amusement park. The Agnese Forces act as bait to distract the Amakusa, allowing Touma, Stiyl and Index to sneak into the park.[118] However, they are still attacked by the Amakusa. Stiyl passes Touma a silver cross necklace and then flees with Index. Touma runs away and eventually manages to defeat one Amakiusa member himself. Suddenly, he runs into Orsola, who use the chaos of the battle to escape.[119] They talk, and Touma decides to give Orsola the necklace. A wounded Stiyl suddenly lands near them, and the one responsible—Tatemiya Saiji, leader of the Amakusa—appears. With Stiyl's help, Touma manages to defeat Saiji.[120]

The battle is won and the Amakusa are restrained. Index checks Touma's condition and then bites him for being reckless. However, Saiji claims that Orsola shouldn't be returned to the Roman Catholic Church as they plan to use her to decode The Book of the Law for their own use. Touma is doubtful, but they suddenly hear Orsola scream. Two of the Roman Catholic nuns arrive to take Saiji captive. Touma asks to see Orsola and pushes past one of the nuns, causing them to attack him. He is nearly killed, but Index intervenes. The nuns decide to retreat.[121] Touma and the other two meet up with Stiyl. However, Stiyl (and by extension, the Anglican Church) doesn't want to intervene in what is now an internal matter of the Roman Catholic Church. Saiji heads off on his own to free his comrades for an attempt to rescue Orsola.[122] Touma pretends to drop the issue and has Stiyl take Index back to Academy City. In truth, he heads to the Church of Orsola to rescue Orsola alone.[123]

Touma breaks down a magical barrier and sees an injured Orsola. He challenges Agnese and her nuns despite the overwhelming odds. Almost immediately afterwards, Stiyl appears, claiming that the cross given to Orsola means that she is now part of the Anglican Church. Next are Saiji, the rest of the Amakusa, and Index; it turns out that they were planning to settle this themselves and were previously trying to make Touma leave.[124] Touma runs off while carrying Orsola, with the nuns in pursuit.[125] However, the enemy is too strong and Touma's side are forced to retreat to a chapel. They get the idea to use The Book of the Law's power, by having Orsola decode Index's memory of the grimoire, but it turns out that Orsola's decoding method doesn't actually work.[126]

Touma defeats Agnese.

Touma decides to go out and challenge Agnese to a one-on-one fight. While he buys time with this tactic, the Amakusa set up Stiyl's rune cards so he can use Innocentius, lowering the nuns' morale. This ensures that there is no external interference to the fight, and Touma eventually knocks out Agnese. The remaining nuns surrender.[127]

After waking up in the usual hospital, Touma sees Kanzaki Kaori (the former leader of the Amakusas) beside his bed. Kanzaki explains how Orsola and the Amakusas have been accepted into the Anglican Church, then apologises for causing him trouble. Touma says that there's no need since he cares about individuals, not groups: he was only helping the Anglican Church because of Index and, although he opposed Agnese in this situation, he'd be willing to help her too if she needs help.[128]

Tree Diagram Remnant Arc

Main article: Tree Diagram Remnant Arc

On September 14th, Touma is visited in his apartment by Misaka 10032. She asks him for help in saving the Sisters: more specifically, to prevent the recovery of the Tree Diagram remnant, which would allow the Level 6 Shift plan to be restarted.[129] He agrees and goes out to help, meeting up with Mikoto on the way. They find Musujime Awaki trying to use her teleportation to collapse a building onto Shirai Kuroko. Mikoto blows a hole in the building using her Railgun and uses magnetism to make a ramp for Touma to run straight up to Kuroko's position, allowing him to negate Musujime's attack. Touma apologises to Kuroko for coming late and asks if he has protected Mikoto's world (referencing his previous promise with Etzali). Kuroko says that he's protected half, and Touma replies that he'll go to protect the other half.[130] When he reaches Awaki, however, she has already been defeated by Accelerator and the Remnant has been destroyed.[131]

Touma negates Awaki's movepoint.

Touma and Index go to visit Kuroko at the hospital afterwards to see how she's healing up, but they accidentally walk in on Kuroko changing clothes, causing Mikoto to give Touma an electricity-infused slap. They then walk in on Misaka 10032 naked in a healing tank, causing Index to bite him. Afterwards, they leave the hospital and Touma complains about the mysterious person who resolved the incident (unaware that Accelerator is also in the hospital and can hear him, though Accelerator doesn't pay attention).[132] In the anime, Kuroko slaps Touma instead of Mikoto.[133]

Daihasei Festival Arc (Index)

Main article: Daihasei Festival Arc (Index)

September 19th arrives, and with it comes the start of the Daihaseisai: a week-long athletics competition in Academy City. Touma talks with Mikoto and gets into an argument, leading to them agreeing to a punishment game where the loser (the one whose team loses the Daihaseisai) will have to follow the orders of the winner. They are unaware that their parents are nearby and witnessed their argument.[134]

After the opening ceremony, Touma heads to his school. He discovers that most of his classmates have collapsed in exhaustion due to spending the previous night playing, the time before the opening ceremony on discussing tactics, and finally having to experience the boredom of the opening ceremony. Fukiyose Seiri arrives and blames Touma for making the others lost their motivation. Touma accidentally steps onto a hose and gets Seiri's top wet, so he apologises to her. Afterwards, the class overhear a conversation between Komoe and another teacher in which the latter looks down on the former for having poor students. Touma uses this to rouse up his class.[135] This allows them to win their first event, albeit with considerable injuries.[136]

Touma then heads to his classroom to get his cellphone so he can call Index. He accidentally walks in on Seiri changing clothes, and quickly steps out. Due to this incident, he learns about Seiri's obsession with mail-order goods.[136] He meets up with Index and tries to buy her lunch, but a parade is blocking the way.[137] Suddenly, Mikoto grabs him as she is participating in the scavenger hunt event and needs 'a high school student who competed in the first event'.[138]

After separating from Mikoto, Touma tries to find Index again, only to encounter Motoharu and Stiyl.[139] Motoharu explains the situation to Touma during their next event: the Roman Catholic Lidvia Lorenzetti has hired the courier Oriana Thomson to buy the Stab Sword, a spiritual item that can kill a Saint.[140] They also can't involve Index as this would lead to other magical organisations getting involved.[141] Touma goes off to look for Index (since he still needs to keep her busy so she doesn't get involved), and accidentally sees her changing again. Seiri appears and drags him with her to cheer on their classmates.[142]

Toaru Majutsu no Index II E08 20m 54s

Touma meets Oriana.

As they walk along the street, Seiri tells Touma that he seems to be bored of the festival. Seiri slaps Touma, causing him to fall onto none other than Oriana Thomson. She forgives him and then shakes his hand, breaking a spell that she is using on herself. This causes both her and Touma to realise that something is wrong. Oriana leaves. Touma parts with Seiri and calls Motoharu, confirming that the woman he just encountered is Oriana and also that she is apparently carrying the Stab Sword.[143]

Touma tails Oriana, meeting up with Motoharu and Stiyl along the way, but she manages to lose them by setting up some spells at a bus depot.[144] They use magic to track her down and, because of a counter-spell from Oriana, Stiyl is injured in the process.[145] Touma is angry at Motoharu for making Stiyl use magic despite the counter-spell, only to stop when he realises that Motoharu was also injured.[146]

In order to break the counter-spell, Touma and Motoharu sneak into an event involving Tokiwadai Middle School and another middle school.[147] Touma encounters Mikoto and tries to stop her touching what he thinks is the paper containing the counter-spell (it turns out to be an ordinary piece of paper). Suddenly, Seiri (who is helping oversee the event) arrives and accidentally triggers the counter-spell. Motoharu tells Touma to negate the spell, but Seiri remains unconscious. This incident makes Touma enraged.[148]

With the counter-spell gone, they are able to track down Oriana. She tries to escape using a bus, but Stiyl destroys the bus using a card he'd stuck on it earlier. Oriana quickly disables Motoharu, leaving Touma to fight against her.[149] Touma manages to beat her with a punch, but Oriana escapes while leaving the supposed Stab Sword behind.[150] It turns out that Oriana was merely carrying around a decoy.[151]

Touma and Motoharu meet up with Stiyl, who has received a report about the true nature of the item being transported: the Croce di Pietro, a spiritual item that could be used to bring Academy City into the domain of the Roman Catholic Church.[152] Motoharu and Stiyl go off to do their own investigation, leaving Touma to take care of Index.[153]

Touma takes Index to a coffee shop where he meets his parents, Mikoto and Mikoto's mother. They have lunch together.[154] Later at 3 pm, Touma happens to meet Himegami Aisa and she takes him to Komoe, who is currently arguing with Stiyl over the latter's smoking. Touma and Aisa help Stiyl escape. Touma then receives a call from Motoharu regarding Oriana, so they resume the pursuit.[155]

During the pursuit, Touma hears from Motoharu that he is attempting to track Oriana using magic. However, Oriana goes after Motoharu to take him down and stop them being able to track her.[156] Motoharu fights Oriana and manages to force her to flee, so Touma and Stiyl try to find her again. However, Oriana runs into Aisa and (due to the Anglican cross she wears) mistakes her for an enemy magician, so she attacks her.[157] Soon after, Touma and Stiyl come across the heavily injured Aisa. Stiyl wants to continue pursuing Oriana, against Touma's objections. Fortunately, Komoe tries to heal Aisa using the magic that Index taught her in their first meeting. Upon seeing this, Stiyl decides to stay behind to heal Aisa, and tells Touma to go on without him.[158]

Touma calls Motoharu and they discuss what Oriana is doing. Thanks to a report from Orsola, they come to the conclusion that the Croce di Pietro requires a certain constellation to use.[159] Unfortunately, Touma runs into Index again and has to lie to her to make her leave.[160] At 5 pm, he meets up with Motoharu again and they receive a a call from Orsola, who tells them the places where the enemy could use the Croce di Pietro.[161] They meet up with Stiyl and head to the Ironhide Institute of Aviation Technology.[162]

File:Snapshot20110108190200.jpg

Touma faces off against Oriana.

They arrive at the institute. However, Motoharu is injured by one of Oriana's traps, so only Touma and Stiyl fight against Oriana.[163] After a difficult battle that leaves Stiyl heavily injured, they able to beat Oriana.[164] However, Lidvia speaks to them (via a spell), revealing that Oriana was merely a decoy and Lidvia herself has the Cross and will soon use it from outside the city. Touma calls Motoharu and then uses his phone to search for information. After he finds it, he tells Lidvia that he has broken her illusion... just as the night parade begins, creating enough artificial light to obscure the stars. Touma tells Lidvia that she's lost and she should run away.[165]

Touma and the others are sent to the usual hospital. Index is angry at Touma for being left out of events. He is then visited by Mikoto and Kuroko, the former telling him that Tokiwadai has surpassed his school and that he should work hard for the rest of the Daihaseisai. The next morning, Seiri comes to visit (accidentally seeing Touma in the middle of changing), and they go to visit Aisa in her room.[166]

After the events of the Daihaseisai, in which he experienced many unfortunate events, Touma wins a trip for two to Italy at a shopping district draw. He is doubtful of this due to his usual misfortune. However, he nevertheless decides to take the trip, bringing Index with him. At the airport, the security guard stops Index from passing through the gates due to the pins that hold her robe together. Having no choice, Touma is forced to buy Index new clothes before the plane takes off.[167]

Toaru Majutsu no Index II E14 04m 52s

Touma and Index checking out the sites in Italy.

The two finally arrive in Italy, where they suffer due to the heat.[168] Touma soon gets separated from Index (due to her being too busy looking at the food stalls and restaurants) and has trouble due to not knowing Italian. Fortunately, he encounters Orsola Aquinas, who is currently staying here.[169] Orsola tells him that she already found Index, and leads Touma to her apartment to reunite with her.[170]

At Orsola's apartment, Touma reunites with Index and also encounters several Amakusa members (who are helping Orsola move house). Index is carrying a box of gelato and Touma berates her for separating from him, but she doesn't listen.[171] They have lunch, during which Touma learns more about Italy.[172] Touma and Index help clean up the apartment for an hour. Orsola takes Index away for a quick shower. As usual, Touma ends up seeing both of them naked, and this again causes Index to bite him.[173]

The three of them leave the apartment. Suddenly, they are attacked by magicians. Touma and Index manage to fight off the magicians, forcing them to retreat on a ship made of ice. However, Touma and Orsola happen to land on the ship as well. The ship leaves the city and heads out to sea. The two head inside the ship to find some place where they won't be found by the crew.[174]

As they move through the ship, they discover that it is merely one out of a fleet of simialr ships. They then run into a familiar face: Agnese Sanctis. Agnese reveals that this fleet is the Queen of the Adriatic Sea and this particular ship is a labour facility intended to punish sinners like herself. Agnese asks the two to save Lucia and Angelene (who escaped but were later recaptured), and in return she will help them escape.[175] Touma and Orsola head to the room where the two nuns are being held, which is being guarded by an ice golem and also has five Roman Catholic men within. Touma destroys the golem and Orsola uses a piece of it to bluff the men into surrendering.[176] They free Lucia and Angelene, only to find out that the one that truly needed rescuing was Agnese as she is about to be used in some sort of spell. To make matters worse, the other ships begin firing at theirs, destroying it and causing all four of them to drop into the sea.[177] The Amakusas, tipped off by Index, save them with a paper boat.

Fortunately, the Amakusas (who also have Index with them) rescue them with a magical submarine.[178] They return to the coast to have dinner and discuss their enemies' plans. Based on information from Angelene and Lucia, the fleet is led by Bishop Biagio Busoni and its purpose is to cast a spell that would destroy Venezia, the land as well as the pieces of its culture around the world. During these events, Itsuwa (one of the Amakusa who has a crush on Touma) tries to approach him, but Touma doesn't notice her intentions. They then discuss how to rescue Agnese. Tatemiya points out that the task is seemingly impossible, causing Touma to say he'll go alone if Tatemiya won't do it. The Amakusa leader then reveals that he already has a strategy to save Agnese.[179]

They go out to sea again and approach the fleet.[180] Tatemiya carries out his strategy: to use numerous magical ships as unmanned suicide bombers, distracting the enemy so they can board. The enemy notices this plan, and opens fire on a ship that is submerged below them, only to find out the submerged ship wisas a decoy. Touma and the others were actually aboard one of the supposed suicide ships, and they are thus able to board the fleet. They fight against other members of the Agnese Forces, with Touma asking them why they're not helping Agnese.[181] The Amakusa keep the nuns occupied while Touma, Index and Orsola head to the main ship where Agnese is being held. Many ice golems attack them, so Touma tells the others to go ahead while he deals with the golems.[182]

After getting away from the golems, Touma receives a call from Orsola and Index. The call is interrupted by an attack from Biagio. Touma and the bishop begin fighting.[183] Biagio seemingly manages to crush Touma underneath numerous crosses,[184] then heads to Agnese's room to find Orsola there. He attacks Orsola and, when she tries to fight back, Agnese, but Touma reappears and punches out Biagio.[185] However, Biagio recovers and attempts to kill them all using the self-destruct function of the fleet. Touma fights Biagio again and manages to defeat him by exploiting Biagio's own magic. He destroys the core of the fleet, causing the ships to crumble and him to fall into the sea.[186]

Touma wakes up in an Italian hospital and finds it refreshing. Unfortunately, he receives a call from Heaven Canceller, who tells him that he needs to return to Academy City (using a supersonic passenger plane) for treatment. He also relays a message from Mikoto: when Touma returns, she will subject him to the punishment game that they agreed on during the Daihaseisai. Touma desperately tries to resist being sent back, to no avail.[187]

September 30th arrives, meaning that Touma and other students change into their winter uniforms.[188] While at school, he and his friends get into a misunderstanding with Fukiyose Seiri that causes her to beat them up.[189]

At noon, school ends and Touma begins heading home, only to run into Mikoto, who reminds him of the punishment game. Touma snaps and begins acting like Mikoto's slave, much to her embarrassment.[190]

Touma separates from her, with an agreement to meet at 1 pm, and returns to his dorm. He talks to Tsuchimikado Maika and then to her brother Motoharu. The latter invites Touma and Index to his dorm to share a meal, since Maika seemingly made too much food for him. After they start eating, Touma points out that Maika probably made this much food so Motoharu could save it for later, which leads to a fight breaking out over the food.[191]

Due to said fight, Touma is half an hour late to his meeting with Mikoto.[192] Mikoto takes him to the School District 7 Underground Shopping Center. Here, Mikoto plans to sign up for a pair mobile phone contract, as this comes with a bonus Gekota strap. Touma points out that this contract is intended for a couple, to Mikoto's embarrassment. Additionally, they need to show a photograph of themselves as a couple. They make several attempts to take the photograph. Eventually, Kuroko teleports in and kicks Touma in the back of the head. Touma asks if he can leave now, since Kuroko is willing to take the photo with Mikoto, but Mikoto shoots lightning at him.[193]

Touma waits for Mikoto to finish the phone plan. Misaka 10032 approaches and, because she's not wearing her usual goggles, he initially mistakes her for Mikoto. Touma suggests that she wear something to distinguish herself from her older sister.[194] He buys her a necklace and then some sweets shaped like chicks. However, Misaka 10032 mistakenly thinks the chicks are alive and attacks Touma when he eats one. At that moment, Mikoto returns. She gets angry at Touma for calling out to other people instead of sticking to her. Misaka 10032 decides to be more honest with her feelings and embraces Touma's arm. Suddenly, Last Order (another of the Sisters, and the one who'd just stolen 10032's goggles) runs up and hugs Touma's other arm. Misaka 10032 passes the chicks to Touma and then runs after Last Order, with Touma afraid to follow them.[195]

Touma is left behind by an angry Mikoto. On the other hand, Last Order approaches him again.[196] She introduces herself as the last model of the Misaka Network and thanks him for stopping the experiments, though Touma doubts her sincerity. He treats her to a bucket of popcorn, though she's unable to finish it.[197] He coincidentally runs into Motoharu and Aogami, who misunderstand the situation as being romantic, and he gets into a brawl with them.[198] As night approaches, Last Order talks about the person who she doesn't want to cause any more trouble for (Accelerator, though Touma doesn't realise it) and leaves.[199] Soon after, Index appears, having been looking for him.[200] Index lectures Touma for being inconsiderate and tells him he should act more like the nice stranger who treated her to lunch (Accelerator, again). She then remembers that the stranger lent her pocket tissues and runs off to return them.[201]

Touma heads back up to the surface while looking for Index. Suddenly, everyone else inexplicably falls unconscious. Touma hears of an intruder to the city from an Anti-Skill radio. A crying Last Order runs up to him and begs him for help (as she and Accelerator had just been attacked by Kihara Amata and his Hound Dog units).[202] Touma agrees and eventually comes across some unconscious Hound Dogs. A group of conscious Hound Dogs arrive to retrieve their comrades, and they manage to find Touma and Last Order (despite their attempt at hiding).[203]

Touma runs away with the small clone and they hide in a family restaurant, though the Hound Dogs follow them here.[204] However, the Hound Dogs are rendered unconscious by Vento of the Front, a member of the Roman Catholic group God's Right Seat and the one responsible for incapacitating most of the city's population using her spell Divine Punishment. To worsen the situation, Touma is Vento's target.[205] Touma fights Vento, telling Last Order to run and call for help.[206] Vento tells him that he is considered the enemy of the Roman Catholic Church and then threatens to kill everyone else in the restaurant.[207] Suddenly, Vento coughs up blood for an unknown reason. She flees, leaving Touma to contemplate his situation.[208]

Touma drags the unconscious customers and staff out of the restaurant, since the building is damaged from the battle and could collapse at any moment. He takes out Last Order's cell phone (which she dropped while running) and calls the numbers in its contacts. He ends up calling Accelerator, though neither of them recognise each other's voice, and explains the situation. Accelerator says he'll retrieve Last Order and tells Touma to stay out of the situation. Touma naturally refuses, so Accelerator tells him to go to the District 7 bridge (lying that it's an emergency meeting point and Last Order should go there) to make him stay out. Before Accelerator hangs up, Touma warns him about the mass unconsciousness and intruder to the city (though he doesn't mention magic or that Vento is responsible).[209]

When Touma goes to the bridge, he coincidentally meets Vento there. But before they can resume fighting, something happens that distracts both of them.[210] It is the birth of an artificial angel. Touma calls Accelerator again to ask about Last Order and learns that he was lied to. He tells Accelerator that he needs to stop the angel and won't be able to help him.[211]

Touma rushes towards the angel, coming across the Hound Dogs and, after fleeing from them, Index and Mikoto. Index tells him that the angel is Hyouka and to leave the matter to her, as Touma's Imagine Breaker would kill Hyouka. Touma insists that he won't let Hyouka die and that they can save her by working together. Mikoto remains behind to hold off the Hound Dogs.[212] Touma learns from Index that Hyouka and the core controlling her are in two different places. He decides that they should split up, with him going to Hyouka (to protect her from Vento, who's aiming to kill her) while Index deals with the core.[213] Touma arrives at Hyouka's position and confronts Vento when she appears.[214] During their fight, they notice that Hyouka is protecting the bystanders using her power, and Touma tells Hyouka to wait a little longer.[215] Vento reveals that she is coughing up blood due to Hyouka's presence and also reveals her motivation: she believes that science was responsible for killing her brother. Eventually, Touma defeats her and destroys the cross she uses for Divine Punishment.[216] Due to Index's actions, Hyouka begins returning to normal. However, the unconscious Vento is taken away by Acqua of the Back, another member of God's Right Seat. When Touma protests, Acqua points out that Vento would probably be executed if she was left here, then says that the city's population should soon recover from their unconscious state. After Acqua leaves, Touma thinks to himself that he will stop the conflict from continuing any further.[217]

When Hyouka fully returns to normal, Touma heads over to her and suggests that they go to see Index. Hyouka refuses since her recent experience has again convinced her that she is an inhuman monster. Touma reassures her by pointing out how she'd protected everyone even while she was an angel.[218]

On the morning of October 3rd, Touma misses his breakfast due to Index eating it first.[219] He then heads to school. Himegami Aisa tries to spend time with Touma and eat lunch with him. She suddenly begins choking, so Touma tries to rub her back to help her. Unfortunately, his efforts cause her bra strap to become accidentally unhooked, and she punches Touma in the stomach. Aisa runs to the bathroom, then Fukiyose Seiri appears. They talk about the rumours of war and their effects on food prices. Aogami Pierce and Tsuchimikado Motoharu enter the conversation, soon followed by their other classmates, and eventually they decide to go out for sukiyaki that night.[220]

That evening, Touma brings Index along to the dinner at a restaraunt. Here, they continue to discuss the effects of the war, and later hear Komoe complain about the Recovery Exercise done by parents who want to take their kids away from the city before the outbreak of the war. As the eating continues, Seiri then shows her annoyance at the ruckus at Touma and Index's table, and later demands Touma to hand over the eggs he is scrambling as he is doing it too slowly for her liking.[221] Touma later goes outside alone and meets up with Motoharu, whom Touma believes to have been drinking. Motoharu sees Touma's wariness of the upcoming war and assures him that it is not entirely Touma's fault, but is due to various mistakes that built up over time. Nonetheless, Motoharu warns Touma on what's to come, with tougher battles that might get him killed. Touma knows this and, clenching his fists, he declares that he will learn English so that he may better communicate with his enemies. This causes a disappointed Motoharu to punch him, since learning English is the last thing he would have thought as a survival method.[222]

Dangai University Database Center attack

Main article: Dangai University Database Center attack

As Touma and Index go home, they come upon a taxi driver troubled by some drunk woman. Touma tries to help out the drunk woman whom he recognizes as Misaka Misuzu, Mikoto's mother. She acts flirty, much to Index's annoyance. Misuzu asks for directions to the Dangai University database centre. She soon leaves by taxi, but not before exchanging email addresses with Touma.[223] Touma and Index return home. The former receives a call from Mikoto, asking when he's going to reply to an email she sent him, but the call is interrupted by a weak signal. He then receives a call from Misuzu.[224]

It turns out that Misuzu has arrived at the database centre but is now being attacked by Skill-Outs. Touma suggests that she call her daughter but Misuzu refuses, so he decides to act himself.[225] He arrives at the centre and picks up a pane of bulletproof glass to use as a shield. He finds Misuzu surrounded by armed Skill-Outs. Spotting a gun nearby, he decides to try using it to threaten the Skill-Outs. Unfortunately, Misuzu notices Touma and her surprised reaction gives away his presence. A Skill-Out with a nose piercing approaches to investigate and Touma hits him with the glass, only to find that he had a friend nearby. The Skill-Outs start shooting and eventually knock the glass out of Touma's hands. Before they can kill him, Accelerator (who's also here to save Misuzu) joins the battle. Touma reaches Misuzu and tries to escape with her.[226] Accelerator mistakes Touma for another Skill-Out and shoots at him, but misses.[227]

Touma turns the tables on Shiage.

Touma and Misuzu make it to the exit, only to be blocked by Hamazura Shiage, the Skill-Out with the nose piercing. He and Touma fight. Shiage claims that Skill-Out, being a group of Level 0s in a city of espers, has no choice but to prey on others. Touma refutes this by saying that there are plenty of Level 0s who don't do such things (including himself). Eventually, Touma knocks Shiage out.[228] Due to his injuries, Touma is carried on a stretcher towards an ambulance. Misuzu explains how she came here to take Mikoto away but she no longer thinks this is necessary, since Mikoto has people to protect her. Touma is confused by her wording (not knowing that she's also referring to Accelerator), but is brought into the ambulance before he can ask what she means.[229]

A dumbfounded Suama finds her unable to grasp the reasonings of the students before her.

Touma, Motoharu, Aogami and Seiri are sent to the teachers’ lounge to be scolded by Oyafune Suama, a teacher at their school. It turns out that Touma was arguing with his friends about what color of bunny girl was best (black, white or red), causing Seiri to intervene.[230] As punishment, Suama orders the four to pick the weeds off the school grounds. Motoharu and Aogami ditch, leaving Touma and Seiri to work together. They talk about school and, due to getting distracted, end up playing a simplified version of baseball.[231] Several hours pass, with the loser of each round having to spend five minutes weeding. They accidentally hit Suama in the face with the ball, causing her to stomp on Touma's back.[232] She rushes back to the staff room to change out of her dirty clothes. Touma follows her to ask if he and Seiri can go home now, causing Suama to angrily throw various objects at him.[233]

Touma heads home, running into Mikoto along the way. She asks why he hasn't replied to her email. Touma shows her his phone to demonstrate that he hasn't received it, causing Mikoto to notice that her mother's address is in the phone. She calls her mother to ask how this happened, then angrily asks Touma what he was doing with her mother. Touma changes the topic by saying it's time for them to return to their dorms, leading to the more serious topic of the chaos occurring around the world. Mikoto asks what's going on and Touma is unable to answer.[234]

The two part ways and Touma goes shopping. After he leaves the store, he bumps into an elderly woman and apologizes for doing so. The woman also apologises, but she points a gun at him.[235] She leads him to a nearby park, where they sit down to talk about the state of the world.[236] Touma asks who the woman is and she reveals herself to be Oyafune Monaka, a member of Academy City's board of directors. She wants his help, explaining that the Roman Catholic Church is using magic (though she thinks of it as esper powers) to cause the demonstrations around the world. She also warns Touma that Academy City is on the edge and if things don't get settled an economical bombing could be in effect.[237]

Motoharu "punishing" Monaka.

Suddenly, Motoharu appears and, with Monaka's agreement, he shoots her.[237] Touma angrily punches Motoharu, only to be stopped by Monaka. She explains that she arranged for Motoharu to shoot her non-fatally, as she is going against the other directors and, if she had not made this arrangement, her family would be attacked in retaliation. Motoharu calls an ambulance, then leads Touma to a plane waiting in School District 23.[238]

A bird's eye view of Avignong as Tsuchimikado Motoharu and Kamijou Touma skydive into the city.

They arrive at the airport and Touma leaves his groceries in a refrigerated locker. Motoharu lets him know that Maika is taking care of Index so he doesn't have to worry about leaving her behind to starve. He also tells him that they're heading to France, and the plane they'll be using is the same supersonic model that transported him after the La Regina del Mare Adriatico incident.[239] They board the plane and Motoharu explains that the thing responsible for the chaos is the Document of Constantine (C-Document for short), a spiritual item that makes believers of the Christian faith believe something is the absolute truth no matter how ridiculous it is. During this explanation, Touma is uncomfortable due to the plane's speed. They reach their destination, the French city of Avignon, before Motoharu finishes his explanation. Motoharu brings Touma to a door, puts on a parachute and has Touma do so as well. Touma is reluctant to jump out of the plane, so Motoharu forces him out. Touma's parachute activates automatically, but it gets caught around his neck and he lands in the Rhone River.[240]

Fortunately, Itsuwa of the Amakusa rescues Touma from the river and releases his parachute. It turns out that she is also here because of the C-Document. Touma explains why he's here, then asks Itsuwa if she has a change of clothes in her bag, since her current clothes are wet and thus transparent.[241] Itsuwa changes, but her new clothes are very revealing, much to her embarrassment. She suggests that they work together since they're both after the C-Document, and Touma agrees.[242]

The two head away from the river and stop at a cafe. Here, Touma sees many Avignon citizens who are injured from the demonstrations and protests. Itsuwa asks Touma if he was able to contact Motoharu, but he replies in the negative. As they eat, Itsuwa explains how Avignon has the Palace of the Popes, a building with a ley line joining it to the Papal State. This allows spells that can normally only be done in the Papal State (such as the C-Document) to be performed. Touma asks if she's been inside but she answers that she is simply here to investigate it. Touma feels like the place might be suspicious and asks Itsuwa if there is any way he can help her. Before she can answer, an army of protesters begins attacking any Japanese in sight.[242]

Itsuwa and Touma scout the area for rioters.

They flee the cafe. Touma deduces that the enemy saw him arrive and is using the C-Document to attack him. He convinces Itsuwa that the only option is to go to the Palace of the Popes and destroy the C-Document.[242] They head to the Palace but cannot get in as it's surrounded by rioters. Suddenly, Touma receives a call from Motoharu and they discuss the situation. Motoharu proposes that they sever the ley line to stop the C-Document being used, creating an opening for them to enter the palace.[243] While they search for this ley line, Touma asks if he could sever it with Imagine Breaker, but Motoharu says that ley lines are an exception to what his power can negate.[244]

Touma and Itsuwa head to a museum that has the ley line running through it. Itsuwa prepares to disrupt the ley line (showing embarrassment as one of the items she needs is a pair of panties), only to be interrupted by a magical attack.[245] The attacker is Terra of the Left, another member of God's Right Seat. The three of them fight, with Terra having the upper hand. Eventually, Touma is struck in the torso by one of Terra's attacks yet survives. Terra explains that his spell, Execution of Light, allows him to change the precedence of things so that his attacks can pierce through any target while he is immune to his enemies' attacks. Motoharu appears and attacks Terra using magic and his gun. Itsuwa tells Touma that they should take this opportunity to get to the Palace of the Popes. However, the battle is interrupted by a third party: the Academy City military.[246]

Touma is shocked at these events. Terra flees, so Motoharu tells Touma and Itsuwa to go after him and the C-Document. Motoharu himself stays behind to deal with the Academy City forces[247]

Touma and Itsuwa run through the streets of Avignon, the former angry that Academy City has taken this forceful approach. They arrive at the now-unguarded Palace of the Popes and head inside.[248] Touma calls Mikoto to ask her what she knows about the situation. She says that, according to the news, a religious group in Avignon is using some weapon that violates international law, so Academy City has gotten involved. They are interrupted by Terra throwing an Academy City soldier through the wall, knocking Touma down. He is holding the C-Document and grumbling about how he his best option would be to flee. He fights the two of them once more.[249] Itsuwa points out that Terra's spell has a weakness, but she is knocked out before she can reveal it. Terra comments that Touma would have been able to protect her if he had Imagine Breaker's original functionality. He sees Touma's reaction and deduces that he has amnesia (correctly, if for the wrong reason). Touma is enraged over his secret being discovered.[250]

Touma defeats Terra of the Left.

However, Touma continues fighting and figures out Terra's weakness: he cannot use his spell on more than one pair of targets at the same time. Touma demands to know why Terra is going this far, so Terra explains that his goal is to bring (his idea of) salvation to all of humanity. Touma declares that it is not the Roman Catholic Church who is at fault, otherwise people like Orsola and Agnese would be as twisted as well, and concludes that Terra doesn't know what "salvation" even means. By making ingenious use of Itsuwa's spear and a gun (left by the soldier Terra had defeated earlier), he defeats Terra.[251] He destroys the C-Document, thanks Itsuwa for her help and then tries to call Motoharu, but finds that his phone is broken from the battle. Terra regains consciousness, though he lacks the strength to resume fighting, and decides to tell Touma the secret of his power. Unfortunately, they are interrupted by an Academy City bombing that knocks out Touma and seemingly kills Terra.[252]

While Touma is unconscious, Itsuwa wakes up and Accelerator (now working as an agent of Academy City) arrives to confirm Terra's death. Itsuwa tries to protect Touma, but Accelerator doesn't pay any attention to them.[253]

Touma being chased by Saigo

In one class, Touma makes a comment that causes the class to take longer than usual. As a result, his class fail to reach the school cafeteria before everything is sold out. They decide to get lunch from a convenience store and thus devise a complex plan to sneak out of school. Touma and three others try to sneak out, only to be caught by the guidance councilor Saigo. They split up and attempt to flee.[255] Suddenly, Itsuwa appears, on a mission to protect Touma from Acqua of the Back (who is now coming for him). She mistakes Saigo for Acqua and attacks him, forcing Saigo to retreat and allowing Touma to buy lunch for the class. Afterwards, Touma asks Itsuwa about why she's here and learns about her mission. He's surprised that he's being targeted by a powerful organisation, then has trouble believing that Itsuwa is here as his bodyguard.[256]

Touma knock onto Itsuwa's breast

Touma's head falls upon Itsuwa's breasts.

Meanwhile, the Amakusa Christians are watching from afar and decide to help Itsuwa get closer to Touma. Tatemiya Saiji kicks a ball that hits Touma, causing his head to land in Itsuwa's chest. However, Mikoto happens to witness this and angrily chases after Touma.[257] After running all around the city to escape Mikoto, Touma and Itsuwa return to the former's dorm. Index is annoyed at Itsuwa's presence, something not helped by Touma wanting to keep Itsuwa's mission a secret (as he doesn't want her involved in the situation). Itsuwa gives cat food to Sphynx and, when asked by Touma, says to leave the housework to her. Touma shows her where the wok is and Itsuwa begins cooking. Index tries to eat the food early, causing Touma to stop her and force her to do some housework for once (specifically, cleaning the bath). The situation becomes even more chaotic when Tsuchimikado Maika comes in, drawn by the smell of cooking.[258] Index accidentally breaks the bathtub, so Itsuwa suggests that they go out to a bathhouse.[259]

They travel to School District 22 using a rented motorbike (with Itsuwa driving, Touma sitting behind her and Index in the sidecar). As they travel, Itsuwa reveals her extensive knowledge about the city, surprising Touma.[259] They arrive at the Spa Resort Serene Springs and bathe. Touma finishes bathing first and notices a doctor running into the female pool (to resuscitate Mikoto, who fainted there), which confuses him.[260]

Touma leaves the bathhouse to get some air. Itsuwa accompanies him, leaving Index behind in the food tasting area. They go for a walk, during which they discuss the Amakusa's move to London and the clothing of Itsuwa and Kanzaki Kaori.[261] They then talk about Acqua of the Back, God's Right Seat, and the role of the Amakusa Christians in protecting them. When they come to a metal bridge, Touma notices that there's nobody else around. Acqua of the Back appears, declaring his intention to crush the one responsible for all the chaos in the world. After a short conversation, they begin fighting. Touma is unable to even keep up with Acqua and laments the difference in power between them.[262] He is soon pummeled into unconsciousness. Itsuwa tries to heal him, but fails due to his Imagine Breaker. Touma regains consciousness, thanks Itsuwa for trying to heal him, and charges at Acqua again. Acqua deals him a powerful blow, though he smiles at Touma's courage. He tells Itsuwa that he will give them one day, during which Touma can sever his right hand and give it up, and in return Acqua will spare him. He then flings Touma from the bridge, causing him to bounce on the water several times and then sink.[263]

Touma survives but with horrific injuries. He is taken to a hospital in School District 22 for treatment. Index arrives and waits by his bed. While Touma is unconscious, the Amakusas head out to fight Acqua again.[264] During this battle, Kanzaki Kaori eventually comes to their aid.[265]

Mikoto encounters the injured Touma

Touma leaves the hospital and encounters Mikoto, who is coincidentally in the same district. While disoriented, he tells her that he needs to go to help the Amakusas (though he doesn't specifically name them). Mikoto reveals that she knows about his memory loss (she overheard it from Terra of the Left during the Avignon incident, as Touma's phone was still calling hers at the time). She says that he doesn't have to always fight alone and that she can help him fight. She then tries to bring him back to the hospital. Touma refuses, saying that his amnesia does not change what he must do. He parts with Mikoto and moves on.[267]

Touma arrives just in time to stop a powerful spell from Acqua. This shocks Acqua, delaying him long enough for Kanzaki to physically restrain him. This allows Itsuwa to hit Acqua with the Saint Destroyer spell, hurling him into an artificial lake and seemingly killing him.[268]

She tells him it's only normal for him to be unable to move and expresses her amazement that they were able to defeat Acqua. Itsuwa is by Touma's side after the battle. Touma tries to sit up and Itsuwa stops him, causing their faces to be close together. Index reveals her presence, annoyed at the current situation and at Touma leaving the hospital earlier. Both she and Index start criticizing Touma for his rash action. They are interrupted by Kanzaki walking in while dressed in an erotic fallen angel maid outfit (something Motoharu convinced her to do to "thank" Touma). From this day onward, Touma would only feel fear upon seeing this sight.[269]

Touma finds a memo in his pocket from Motoharu explaining that he (Touma) has no choice but to go to England, and that there's some British currency in the cloakroom for him to use. They head to the plane. Index notes that though that they are going back to her city of birth, she doesn't really feel like it's her birthplace as she has no memories from before about a year ago. Here, Touma discovers for the first time since his own memory loss that Index has also lost her memories.[273] They find out that Motoharu has prepared for them to board a supersonic passenger plane, much to their horror. Seeing this, Touma and Index decide to switch to a commercial flight—Sky Bus 365. Only Sphynx is taken on board the intended supersonic passenger plane, and it arrives in London before both of them.[274]

Touma fights terrorist Eiker Lugoni

During the flight, Touma hears news about an explosion that destroyed the Eurotunnel. While trying to placate an angry Index, he accidentally knocks open a panel on the wall, exposing some cables. He quickly closes it again. A flight attendant approaches and Touma learns that their meal will arrive in one hour.[275] Some time later, Touma decides to check on the flight attendant. He bumps into her and causes her to drop some papers, which he notices have flight numbers on them.[276] Touma returns to Index, but her hunger causes him to head off to buy some crackers for her. He happens across a room with a bloodstain in it. The flight attendant reappears and captures him.[277]

It turns out that the plane is being attacked by terrorists, who are threatening to bring it down if their demand is not satisfied. The captain arrives and orders for Touma to be kept separate from the other passengers, to avoid causing a panic. Touma offers to help, but the captain refuses to let an amateur get involved.[278] While Touma is away from his seat, a terrorist brings Index to a nearby room (to kill her discreetly, as Index had caught him trying to sabotage the plane). Touma breaks out of his room and fights the terrorist, driving him off. The captain and flight attendant arrive, with the former saying that both Touma and Index need to be kept confined. Angered that the captain is doing this even after his passengers have been attacked, Touma hits him and declares that he will act on his own.[279] Touma triggers an alarm to unsettle the terorrist.[280] Due to this and also an illusion cast by Necessarius, the terrorist reveals himself, so Touma fights and captures him.[281] However, Touma continues thinking about the situation and realises that there is a second terrorist hidden among the cargo. Touma heads to the cargo hold, asking Index and the flight attendant to bring him hot drinks.[282] Using the drinks as a weapon, Touma defeats the terrorist. Unfortunately, the terrorist pulls out a grenade. Fortunately, Stiyl (on board a second plane) intervenes by cutting a hole in the wall, causing the terrorist to be sucked into the hole. Touma knocks the grenade away and tells the terrorist to hang on.[283]

At 8 pm, Touma and Index disembark at the airport in Edinburgh, after which they need to take one domestic flight to reach London. Both Index and Touma decide to eat, much to the former's delight. But before they can do so, Kanzaki Kaori appears to take them to Buckingham Palace via helicopter.[284]

Touma and Index meet the British Royal Family.

As they arrive at Buckingham Palace, Index bites Touma's head out of hunger. Touma is worried that his Imagine Breaker might destroy the national treasures inside, but Kaori reassures him that there aren't any magical items. They enter and meet Knight Leader. Touma asks for some food for Index and Knight Leader has a maid bring over scones. Touma and Index gorge themselves on the scones, causing Kaori to punch the former and restrain the latter so they can move on.[285] As they head towards the meeting place, Knight Leader explains why Touma and Index have been called here: it's believed that magic was involved in the Eurotunnel bombing. Finally, they meet with Elizard, the queen of Britain. Touma notices the sword in her hand, which Elizard explains to be the ceremonial sword Curtana Second. Soon after, the three princesses Riméa, Carissa and Villian arrive.[286]

They all move to a reception area to have the meeting. Touma feels out of place and takes out his phone to check the time. This leads to Carissa, then Rimes and Villian getting him to take photos of themselves with him. Elizard also tries to get a photo taken, but is unsuccessful. After that diversion, they begin discussing the Eurotunnel bombing. Touma is one of the least vocal of the group, though is still able to speak more than even Villian. He suggests that the Sky Bus 365 attack might be related as the terrorists were French, leading to a discussion on the growing suspicions of the country regarding France. Meanwhile, Elizard asks Index to analyze the magic that was used to interfere with the illusion cast by Necessarius on Sky Bus 365, leading to Index to say that is Norse magic and that the magician probably female. They decide to split up to investigate, with Index going to Folkestone to help with the Eurotunnel investigation.[287] Carissa tells Touma that he can't accompany her as his power would interfere with the investigation. Index and Kanzaki say that Touma doesn't need to do anything. Elizard agrees, though adds that he'll need to pay for his stay in England unless he contributes. Touma therefore has to join in.[288]

Index v17 225

Oriana's sensuality embarasses her old enemy.

Touma leaves the palace and meets up with Oriana, who is currently working for the Anglican Church. He's surprised at teaming up with a former enemy, but Oriana points out that she is a mercenary who will work for anyone as long as she's paid. Touma asks where they are headed now, so Oriana shows him security camera footage revealing that New Light, the suspected enemy, have already made it to London.[289]

They head to where New Light's car is, only to receive a report that a member of New Light has caused trouble in a nearby bar. They soon find said member, a girl named Lessar. They begin fighting. Lessar unthinkingly uses a suitcase she's holding as a shield, only to be horrified at what she's done, so Touma and Oriana decide to try destroying the case. Lessar flees by jumping between buildings, so they give pursuit.[290] During the pursuit, Lessar communicates with Touma using a pumpkin-shaped spiritual item. She tells him not to get involved as he isn't from the United Kingdom. Touma refuses, and eventually he finds Lessar unable to flee further (due to encountering a road too wide to jump across). Oriana kicks her down to the ground, expecting Touma to catch her. However, this also breaks a window, so Touma changes his mind to avoid being hit by glass shards. Lessar is therefore able to break her fall and continue fleeing, forcing Touma and Oriana to give chase again.[291]

Touma receives a call from Agnese Sanctis, warning him that New Light might be planning on assassinating a princess in order to activate a powerful spell that can attack Europe. Fortunately, two of its members have already been defeated, leaving only Lessar and a fourth member. Touma hangs up the phone, catches up to Lessar and manages to destroy her weapon. He tells her to give up and reveals what he knows of New Light's plan. However, Lessar reveals that Lancis (the fourth member) is waiting outside London. Lancis magically sends the contents of her case to Lessar's, and it's then relayed to a fifth case. Touma demands to know who has the fifth case, but Lessar doesn't answer and is prepared to die. Suddenly, a distant sniper shoots Lessar, who only survives due to Touma pulling her out of the way in time. Touma gives her first aid and asks Oriana if she knows any healing spells (she doesn't). Oriana discovers that the sniper used Robin Hood, a spiritual item developed by a unit under Princess Carissa. Lessar reveals that New Light was transporting Curtana Original, the sword that will change the country.[292]

On Carissa's orders, the knights begin carrying out a coup d’état. Although worried about Index (who was traveling with Carissa), he decides to get Lessar healed first. They go to the Necessarius Women's Dormitory in Lambeth. However, the knights are in their way. Oriana decides to distract them, telling Touma to get Lessar to the dorm, and then go to Waterloo Station to take a train to Folkestone.[293] But before they can carry out their plan, Sherry Cromwell attacks the knights with her golem. Oriana tells Touma to head for the dorm while she helps Sherry fight the knights. However, a stray shot from the battle severs railway power cables, cutting off Touma's planned route to Folkestone.[294]

Regardless, Touma makes it to the dorm. He finds Orsola Aquinas, who was left behind in the commotion, and has her heal Lessar. He then meets with a nun and she tells him the plan: they will attack the knights using long-distance bombardment, then use the resulting opportunity to escape. The nun also points out that Touma can still get to Folkestone using one of the diesel engines being used by the knights. With the plan decided, they prepare for battle.[295]

Floris uses her wings to try and slow her and Touma's fall.

Touma succeeds in escaping and then sneaks onto a train. A knight approaches, so he moves to another car to hide. Here he encounters Floris, a member of New Light captured by the knights (though he doesn't recognise this fact).[296] She asks him to get the key to her restraints. Touma instead uses his right hand to destroy her restraints, which triggers an alarm. Touma opens a door and says that they need to jump into a river. Floris protests, but Touma grabs her and jumps... only for her to reveal that the river is less than a metre deep. Floris uses her wing-shaped spiritual item to slow their descent.[297] They float downstream and happen to run into Princess Villian, who is also fleeing.[298]

Carissa using the destructive powers of Curtana Original to launch Touma into the sky.

They are picked up by an Amakusa scout, as the Amakusa had been informed of their presence by Agnese Sanctis. The Amakusa offer to help Touma search for Index, but he refuses their help to avoid ruining their plans. Touma comes across a carriage and Acqua of the Back defeating several knights. He's initially terrified, thinking that God's Right Seat is getting involved, but Acqua says that they are currently on the same side and points out that Index is in the carriage. However, Carissa arrives. Touma tries to work with Acqua to fight her, but Carissa's attack sends him flying into the air.[299]

Touma points out that Carissa has already succeeded in taking over, but Acqua says that her rule is fragile and then leaves.[300] Index wakes up and the two of them soon reunite with the Amakusas. This requires them to sneak into the subway and, due to the nature of the security, only Touma, Index and Villian can carry out this plan.[301]

With Index's instructions and Villian's driving, Touma's party reaches a subway station in London. However, a shutter with an electronic lock blocks their way.[302] They head through the subway and encounter servants from Buckingham Palace, who are here to help them. They then reach the barrier, which turns out to be a golem made of paper.[303] With the combined efforts of Touma, Index, Villian and the servants, the golem is defeated. Itsuwa calls them to say that, with the barrier gone, they can now sabotage Curtana Original, but Touma's group need to leave quickly to avoid an explosion.[304]

Index v18 002-004 Textless

The "last supper" of the Anglican Church Forces before their assault on London.

The group later rendezvous with the Anglican Church forces in the outskirts of London. During the "Last Supper", Touma is with Sphynx, though is unable to eat something while everything else is rushing to eat on their own.[305] In the Battle of Buckingham Palace, Touma is the second one to arrive at the battlefield after their group is separated by Carissa's counterattack using Curtana Original's dimensional debris. He saves Villian after she argues with Carissa. Touma is later forced to contend against not only Carissa and her sword, but with the Griffin Sky mobile fortresses she brought along after "purging" the knights. Touma is later saved by the arrival of Kanzaki Kaori and the rest of the Anglican Church forces. The battle is hard fought and the group makes little headway against Carissa, though they do make a dent on her Griffin Skies. Kanzaki later tells Touma that they will need him and his right hand to destroy the Curtana Original, and that they will give him an opening to allow it after divulging that there is a small delay between Carissa swinging a sword to cut dimensions and the dimensional debris appearing. When the battle turns to their favor thanks to Villian and Index's combination, Carissa orders the firing of a Bunker Cluster cruise missile on the palace. Thanks to Kanzaki's quick thinking, she is able to make a defensive barrier over their area, though not all of it is covered and some of the explosive shells get through, eventually destroying the palace itself. When Touma comes to he tries to call out for his comrades, though to no avail as Carissa, who is unscathed by the bombing, orders to the preparation of another one. After Riméa reveals Carissa's true motives through a mass communication spell to the people on the battlefield, Touma keeps on fighting Carissa. The Knight Leader appears and stops the fire cruise missile using his magic and apologizes to Touma letting them handle Carissa all this time, to which he accepts and tells him that they should help each other. Touma from then on however is completely sidelined after the Knight Leader, Acqua of the Back, and Kanzaki Kaori attacks Carissa at the same time, and even more so after Elizard arrives. It is only after Elizard uses the Union Jack spiritual item and distributing it to the citizens of the United Kingdom that Touma is shown again, admiring the appearance of "heroes" that have come to stop Carissa.

Touma defeats Carissa

As Carissa's defense breaks down in the onslaught of the "heroes" and the forces that oppose her present due to the fact that she was trying to prevent power from her sword to be completely drained, an opening for Touma arrives after Index finally finishes analyzing the sword and uses Spell Intercept on it. Touma calls out to Acqua of the Back, and without a word, knew what Touma was planning. Acqua of the Back catapults Touma toward Carissa using his sword, Ascalon, and from there destroys the sword and then punches Carissa in the face.

Fiamma of the Right showing off his new toy.

Touma reappears immediately after Fiamma of the Right tries to attack Carissa after retrieving a certain spiritual item from the ruins of Buckingham Palace. Fiamma of the Right is delighted to see that another major piece of his plan has come to him; though Fiamma of the Right says he won’t risk fighting Touma just yet since the remote control might be destroyed. For fun, Fiamma of the Right gives a little demonstration of his new toy and summons Index in John’s Pen mode to attack Touma and Carissa. Fiamma of the Right reveals he was after the knowledge of the 103,000 grimoires held within Index, something that the remote control allows him to access. Fiamma of the Right takes his leave, saying to Touma that he is going to Russia in order to collect the "materials" and that he needs to call down an Angel—until then, Touma can hold onto Imagine Breaker.[306]

Touma is loss for words of what happened to Index, and later sees Stiyl's outburst on Laura Stuart. After Elizard explains why they had to use the Collar and the John's Pen remote control on Index, she turns to Touma that since the Collar was destroyed by him it is now impossible for them to make any predictions using their original plan with the John's Pen, and that if Fiamma of the Right attempted to access her knowledge while Index is in her current state may do even more harm to her body. Elizard then takes Index's unconscious body and says that since they created the framework that now tormented Index they will be the ones that will carry out specialized healing for her and will attempt to cut off any interference from Fiamma of the Right, though notes that it will not be enough so long as Fiamma of the Right is undefeated and free to use the controller. After Touma tasks Stiyl to keep a close watch on Index while he goes to fight and beat Fiamma of the Right, Touma tells Elizard that if what Fiamma of the Right said is true then his next target would be Sasha Kreutzev as a real archangel once resided in her body. Hearing this, Elizard tells Touma that she wishes to hide that they have lost control of Index as much as possible. She, however, tells that because of that reason they have no just cause to rescue Sasha.

Trapped by the politics of the situation, Elizard is unable to do anything to aid Touma, though he replies that he doesn't need help and that he will go to Russia and defeat Fiamma of the Right. Touma then turns to Stiyl, telling him that he is going to punch Fiamma of the Right in the face and tell him to watch over Index. Stiyl gets angry at first, but he agrees when Touma points out that Necessarius may do more things to Index and how Stiyl would better able to protect her than him from them.[306]

Touma is also briefly mentioned by the Girl in the Dress as being one of the irregular factors in Aleister's plan, but being within the allowable limit of irregularity along with Accelerator.[308]

At the end, Aiwass is shown having a conversation with Aleister. Aiwass is motivated by the 'value' of doing something, while Aleister judges things by 'efficiency.' Aiwass also comments on the differences between Touma and Accelerator; Accelerator craved for the wholesomeness of being a 'hero' like Touma, to the point he declared himself evil since he cannot reach that

One who follows his ideals no matter what (Kamijou Touma); one that tries hard to redeem himself (Accelerator); and someone who is never looked at by people, nor has any talent, but for the one person he loves, he’ll become a hero anyway (Hamazura Shiage). Aleister's voice actually strains after hearing Aiwass verbal barrages, and says that he will use anything he can, even Aiwass. He threatens Aiwass that despite it finding entertainment at the sight in the errors of his plan, he tells Aiwass that its superiority will not last forever. Touma only physically appears at the end of the arc when he arrives at Russia to confront Fiamma of the Right.[309]
