Kotatsu Syndrome (コタツシンドローム Kotatsushindorōmu?) was a social phenomena that appeared in Academy City around the start of the story's second year.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]

The Kotatsu Syndrome followed on from the Winter Cleaning protests that had happened at the end of the previous year, and was believed to be a natural development of the previous social phenomena, manifesting by January 1st.[1] However, it was eventually revealed that this development was a result of Alice Anotherbible's unconscious influence as she and her cabal moved into the city.[7][8][9][11]

On January 6th, after Alice revived in an unstable state of mind following her seeming death at the hands of "CRC", the Kotatsu Syndrome took on a more damaging form, referred to as Acute Kotatsu Syndrome (劇症型コタツシンドローム Gekishōgata Kotatsushindorōmu?).[9][10][11]

On January 1st, Kotatsu Syndrome had emerged in the city and been named, with Touma and others noticing people suffering from the symptoms during a New Year's shrine visit.[1]
On January 6th, following several days of martial law and the revival of Alice Anotherbible, many of Academy City's inhabitants fell victim to Acute Kotatsu Syndrome and began rioting in costume, threatening to obliviously destroy the city if Alice's influence was not neutralized.[9][10][12][11][8]
