Lilith Crowley (リリス=クロウリー Ririsu Kurōrī?) (28 July 1904–1906 officially), full name Nuit Ma Ahathoor Hecate Sappho Jezebel Lilith Crowley (ニュイ=マ=アサヌール=ヘカテ=サッポー=イザベル=リリス=クロウリー Nyui Ma Asanūru Hekate Sappō Izaberu Ririsu Kurōrī?), usually referred to as Lilith (リリス Ririsu?), was the first daughter of Aleister Crowley and Rose Edith Kelly.[1][2]
Lilith's early death from illness, revealed to be a result of the 'sparks' between clashing phases, is a key motivating factor in Aleister's plan to destroy all magic.[1][3]
Etymology[]
Many of the numerous names comprising Lilith's full name are those of figures from various mythologies:
- Nuit is a Thelemic deity derived from Egyptian goddess Nut.
- Ahathoor is a Thelemic reference derived from Egyptian goddess Hathor.
- Hecate is a Greek goddess associated with witches.
- Sappho was an ancient Greek poet from the island of Lesbos, best known for her poems about love, most now lost and only surviving in fragments.
- Jezebel was a queen from the Hebrew bible who promoted the worship of Baal and Asherah rather than God and eventually met death as a result, coming to be associated with false prophets.
- Lilith is a figure from Jewish mythology, derived from earlier Mesopotamian mythologies. Held to be a female demon and creature of the night, stories in the Middle Ages came to associate Lilith with being Adam's first wife and the mother of demons.
Appearance[]
After being released back into the world, Lilith appears as a young baby wrapped in a blanket, whose gender might not be determinable at a glance and weighs less than 5kg.[4][5] She had a colorful name tag around her wrist, seemingly plastic but actually made from an unknown material.[4][6]
Personality[]
Though Lilith exhibits behavior typical for a baby, her mind is fairly mature and she displays it when communicating via her proxy.[7][8][2][9]
Background[]
Several years before Lilith's birth, Aleister learned of his future daughter's death and the circumstances behind it from his mentor, Allan Bennett. On learning how the Golden Dawn's activities were producing 'sparks' of the kind that would lead to his daughter's death, Aleister engineered the destruction of the cabal and cursed its members.[10][3]
Several years later, Aleister met Rose and after marrying, she became his assistant in his magical research. In Egypt in 1904, Aiwass was summoned into Rose's body and conveyed to Aleister the secrets that he would compile into the Book of the Law which would form the foundation of Thelema. A little while afterwards, Lilith was born.[1] Obsessed with his daughter, Aleister read the stars to determine the name he would give his daughter, one which carried meaning and ended up being very long.[1]
Aleister temporarily stopped his magical research in order to assist with Lilith's birth, and protect his unstable wife and daughter afterwards. After their condition stabilized, to make up for the delay, he set off on a trip to a great mountain to achieve a certain objective. However while he was there, the effects of 'sparks' resulted in Lilith's sudden death from illness. Aleister learned of his daughter's death by letter once he was finished at the mountain. Aleister had wished for his daughter's happiness more than anyone but had not been allowed to come running and be with her as she died.[1] On that day, Aleister left a single tearstain in his diary.[11][12]
Lilith's death was the beginning of Aleister's fall, a trigger great enough for the "human" to hate and curse the destiny of the entire world.[1] Striking back against that which had taken his daughter and torn his family apart, Aleister would plan the destruction of the phases and all magic.[1]
Unknown to Aleister however, Aiwass had intervened when he possessed Rose's body and taken steps while Lilith was in the womb to ensure that her essence would be taken to the safety of another phase until circumstances would allow her to survive when returned.[13]

On December 11th, around the time of Coronzon was launched into space after its attack on Aleister, Aiwass released Lilith back into the world through Academy City's AIM diffusion fields.[15] The baby Lilith ended up being protected by Hamazura Shiage during the incident with A. O. Francisca before eventually being reunited with Aleister.[7][8][16][9][17]

While Touma and Aleister's group pursued the roots Coronzon placed in the United Kingdom, Lilith remained in Egypt, hidden in an RV, under Mina's protection.[18][19] She later received a physical body through the work of Heaven Canceller.[20][21][22][23]

On January 5th, Mina brought Lilith along with her when she and Dion Fortune visited Nuremberg and the supposed site of Lichte, Liebe, Leben to investigate the truth behind Anna Sprengel and "CRC", the legendary Rosicrucians involved in recent events.[25][26]
Abilities[]
Having passed through the Holy Guardian Angel Aiwass and been permeated by various powers, Lilith is described as holding unfathomable hidden power and potential within her.[13] Her spiritual rank is described as being different from that of an adult covered in sin and having lost their divinity, being a truly innocent being barely born from her mother's womb.[13] She is also fairly knowledgeable.[9]
When she was released back into the world, Lilith lacked a proper physical body, instead being just an exposed life force, the basics of the basics. An exposed life force is unstable and since pure power scatters in search of stability, Lilith would not have lasted long if she was simply returned to the surface world straight away, and needed circumstances to reach the point where a vessel of flesh could be created for her.[13][27][17]
While she still had strength to do so, Lilith was capable of creating animated wooden constructs, using her mere thoughts instead of a spell process or quantum mechanics.[2][13] She was also capable of communicating via proxy messages through the wooden lady construct.[2]
Quotes[]
- (To Hamazura Shiage, through a wooden construct) “Proxy Message: Well, if you want to be precise, my name is Nuit Ma Ahathoor Hecate Sappho Jezebel Lilith, but that’s just too long! And pretentious!! …There are parents in every age that want to give their kids ridiculous names, but they really need to think about how the one stuck with the name will feel.” [2]
Trivia[]
- The real Lilith Crowley (1904-1906) had the same long name and short life which her Toaru counterpart had, though with several differences in circumstances. After Lilith's birth, Aleister made an attempt to climb Kangchenjunga, as well as going on several other journeys accompanied by Rose and Lilith. Further rituals to contact Aiwass were conducted during their travels. In 1906, following the family's trip to Southern China, while Rose and Lilith were returning to Europe with Aleister himself on another separate journey, Lilith died of typhoid in Rangoon, something which Aleister learned on his return to Britain.
- When referring to Lilith's long name, the Reading Thoth 78's recreation of Mina Mathers compares it to Jugemu Jugemu, referencing a folktale and common rakugo story involving a newborn baby who ends up with a ridiculously long name (Jugemu Jugemu Kaijarisuigyo-no Suigyōmatsu Unraimatsu Fūraimatsu Kuunerutokoro-ni Sumutokoro Yaburakōji-no burakōji Paipopaipo Paipo-no-shūringan Shūringan-no Gūrindai Gūrindai-no Ponpokopī-no Ponpokonā-no Chōkyūmei-no Chōsuke).
