The anime series adaptation of the Toaru Kagaku no Railgun (とある科学の超電磁砲(レールガン) Toaru Kagaku no Choudenjihou?, lit., "A Certain Scientific Railgun") is a manga series that serves as a side story to the Toaru Majutsu no Index light novels, written by Kazuma Kamachi, who also wrote the original light novels, and illustrated by Fuyukawa Motoi. It started a monthly serialization in Dengeki Daioh in May 2007. The manga series has been adapted into an anime series by J.C. Staff. The story follows the plot of a Level 5 esper , Misaka Mikoto, and her roommate, Shirai Kuroko, solving various problems arising in the vast space of Academy City.

First Season (Toaru Kagaku no Railgun, 2009-2010)
Toaru Kagaku no Railgun focuses on Misaka Mikoto, an electromaster who is the third most powerful of the seven Level 5 espers in Academy City. Set before and during the events of the Toaru Majutsu no Index novels, the anime tells the adventures of Mikoto and her friends during that time period from their point of view.
