Mallybath Blackball (マリーベート=ブラックボール Marībēto Burakkubōru?) is a Witch of the Anglican Church, and operates under the command of Stiyl Magnus. She makes her debut in Toaru Majutsu no Index Movie: Miracle of Endymion with two others, Marie Spearhead, and Jane Elves.

AppearanceEdit

She appears as a young lady with shoulder length wavy red hair. She wears a bowler hat with a ribbon on top. Her outfit is the least revealing among her partners. Instead of wearing a skirt like Marie, she wears breeches, covering all most of her legs, exposing her white stockings. Her robes is the most loose of all, and her white cape covers much of her upper torso.

Unlike the other two witches, she wears a high cut slip-on shoe with a ribbon on top with a thick heel.

PersonalityEdit

Serious in her missions, Mallybath is described as having aspects of being naive and clumsy,[1] something that shows in her work as she is also described as having low combat experience.[1] Indeed, of the three in the movie, she was rescued by Stiyl twice.[2]

BackgroundEdit

Little is known about her, but Mallybath and Jane seem to be subordinate to Marie. She calls Stiyl as teacher not out of respect, like all the others, but because she is making fun of him. She and the others taught themselves magic but got stuck in their learning. There, they plotted to add rune magic to their abilities to solve their problem,[3], they most likely approached Stiyl for this reason.

Marie Spearhead, with Mallybath Blackball and Jane Elves, monitor Arisa.

She and the others first appear monitoring Meigo Arisa while she is with Kamijou Touma and Index in the batting cages.[4] She hides underground while Marie attacks Touma and company. Appearing from beneath, she quickly traps Touma in order for Marie and Jane to take him down. Despite their coordinated attack, they are unable to contend against the combined power of Touma and Index. She is blown away by the force of Imagine Breaker negating her magic.[4]

She is later rescued by Stiyl alongside Marie, chastising them for attacking. They later aid Stiyl against the arrival of the Black Crow Unit or the Civil Affairs Resolution Mediation Unit commanded by Shutaura Sequenzia. They are utterly no match for them however, and are forced to retreat after Kanzaki Kaori demands them to.[4]

Later, Mallybath alongside her partners kidnap Arisa at a local restaurant, and make a run for it in a car along with Stiyl. But they are pursued by Shutaura and her men. Though Stiyl manages to fend off most of their pursuers Shutaura overturns their car, making everyone inside fall unconscious, and prepares to re-capture Arisa. But Touma appears on the scene with some help from his teacher, Komoe. Touma tries to reason with Shutaura but plans to blow up everyone on the highway after recovering Arisa. Stiyl protects his students from the explosion while Touma gets the full blast.[2]

Mallybath winks and waves at the audience.

Mallybath, and the others along with Stiyl prepare for their final mission, to stop Ladylee's plans even if they have to kill Arisa. As they infiltrate the Endymion, the are later contacted by Tsuchimikado Motoharu, telling him of the explosive bolts of the Endymion. With that, Stiyl and the girls acquiesces to his new plan. Here, Mallybath gives a small wink and wave to the screen, breaking the 4th wall before entering Endymion. They fight off the automated security system. Mallybath isn't careful enough and is almost attacked if not for Stiyl's quick intervention. The infiltration later injures Stiyl in the progress. When they reach the energy pillar, they are confronted by one of Ladylee's henchmen, the android Automaton. Mallybath steps in to fight her as she is concerned for Stiyl, but Stiyl pushes her aside as it is his fight. He quickly takes care of the situation with Innocentius destroying the pillar. With its destruction Stiyl grabs the girls and make a quick getaway. Mallybath is last seen with a recuperating Stiyl along with Marie and Jane, berating him for some reason.[2]

AbilitiesEdit

Mallybath's abilities are linked to earth, seemingly, like the other two, through the use of her feather pen. She requires for her to touch the ground, at which point the rocks just out and traps the target. Her powers are most effective with her teammates. Like Marie, she seems to have the ability to hide with her element; she can apparently hide underground an indefinite amount of time.[4] She has also shown to be able to make pillars of earth from the ground.[2]

Like Stiyl, the girls can apparently set up a people-clearing field,[4] and somehow set-up a rune card to display like a television camera.[2]

Character Art DesignsEdit

Kamachi states that he initially she and the others were supposed to be like dolls whose faces could not be seen, but changed his mind after Haimura's designs were "just too cute".[3] According to Haimura Kiyotaka, Mallybath was designed around the motif of a detective.
