Cultural References
- The Trithemius Westcott refers to is Johannes Trithemius (1462 - 1516, born Johann Heidenberg), a German abbot, polymath and scholar, active in the German Renaissance as a lexicographer, chronicler, cryptographer, and occultist. The Cipher Manuscripts involved in the foundation of the Golden Dawn were written in English using a cipher derived from Trithemius' work (specifically his five-book steganographic work Polygraphia).[10] Among his students were Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa and Paracelsus.
- The scattered objects used for Mathers' Belzébuth are compared to Adzuki beans.[11]
- Nephthys and Niang-Niang refer to several methods of torture, punishment and execution including hara-kiri, Lingchi, Paolao, the Six-Location Cut (
六所斬り ?) and the rack.[12] - What Niang-Niang had in mind with the spring onion was an old Japanese folk remedy for colds and fevers, involving shoving the spring onion up the patient's rear end.[12]
