- Good, old Mary, given her name and description as an old and potent alchemist,[3] is likely the Mary written of in the works of the Gnostic Christian writer Zosimos of Panopolis, also known as Mary the Jewess (Maria Hebraea in Latin) or Mary the Prophetess (Maria Prophetissima in Latin). She is said to be an early alchemist who apparently lived between the first and third centuries A.D. in Alexandria, and although no writings of hers survive, is credited with various quotations in hermetic writings and attributed with various alchemical precepts, inventions and operations.
- One of the alchemical precepts attributed to Mary/Maria is the Axiom of Maria; roughly, "one becomes two, two becomes three, and out of the third comes the one as the fourth."
