Takebayashi Yayoi (武林夜宵 Takebayashi Yayoi?) was a student of Tokiwadai Middle School who appears in Toaru Kagaku no Railgun. Four years prior to the main story, she was the head of Tokiwadai's biggest clique and top candidate for the Majesty title, as well as one of the adopted daughters of Takebayashi Family.[1]
Appearance[]
Not much is known about her appearance, but she has waist length hair and wears the Tokiwadai Middle School uniform.[1]
Personality[]
Not much is known about her personality, but she was willing to mount an attack on Tanrei Chemicals to save her abducted clique members and was said to have been well-liked by the younger adoptees,[1] including Sha Danshan and Kessai Kiyoshi.[2][3]
Background[]
At some point in the past, she was adopted by the Takebayashi Family alongside multiple others, to be sent to Academy City with the goal of at least one adoptee entering Tokiwadai and obtaining the school's Majesty title (and the alleged position on the Board of Directors it was supposed to promise). Takebayashi Yayoi was the only one to succeed in gaining admission to Tokiwadai.[1]

Four year prior to the main story and three years prior to the arrival of Tokiwadai's Level 5s, she was the leader of the school's largest clique and having maintained that position over the course of a year, she was top candidate for the title of Majesty.[1] However, members of her clique were abducted. Having obtained information that they were being held captive at Tanrei Chemicals, Takebayashi attacked the company, resulting in her arrest, with two dead and the abducted girls being recovered elsewhere (with Hasekura Reiri and Shin'enkouji Rurikakesu later discussing the possibility of Tanrei bribing Anti-Skill or having an esper falsify or eliminate evidence).[1]

She lost her right to the Majesty title and was erased from Tokiwadai's records by the school's chair, who covered up the scandal, though her name wasn't publically revealed in association with the incident.[1] She supposedly committed suicide in prison afterwards.[1] Having heavily invested in her success, the Takebayashi family went bankrupt and the other adoptees were taken in by various branch families.[1] Her death prompted Sha Danshan's plot to destroy Tokiwadai in revenge.[2][3]

Three years after the covered-up scandal, Hasekura Reiri, who had also sought the Majesty title, mentioned what she knew of the case to Shin'enkouji Rurikakesu who had considered a connection to the cases of shady companies connected to esper development that had been brought down over the past year, Tanrei Chemicals first among them.[1]

As a student of Tokiwadai Middle School, her ability can be presumed to have been at Level 3 or 4.
