"July 18, Part 2" (七月十八日② Shichi-gatsu Jū-hachi-nichi ②?) is the fifth chapter of the Toaru Kagaku no Railgun Manga Series, released on June 21, 2007. This chapter continues from the previous one and is the second part of the Graviton bombings story.

Synopsis[]

Uiharu Kazari, Saten Ruiko, and Misaka Mikoto are out shopping at the Seventh Mist. Uiharu is amazed that even arcade coins can be used as a projectile for Mikoto's Railgun move. Mikoto explains that either way the coin will melt if it flies beyond 50 meters. Saten comments that having her own finishing move must be great and that someday she wants to have a power that has an impact too. Saten holds up a very bold underwear that she suggests that Uiharu should buy. Uiharu says that she could never wear something like that. Saten explains that even if she flips Uiharu's skirt she can show off her underwear to others. Uiharu replies saying that she should not flip her skirt and she doesn't like showing her underwear to others. Uiharu guides the rest to the pajamas section since Mikoto wanted to buy a pair. Mikoto spots a cute pair of pajamas. Saten criticizes these pajamas for being childish and Uiharu agrees. Misaka also agrees with them, hiding her true opinion of the pajamas.

As Saten and Uiharu go to the swimsuits section, Mikoto picks up the pajamas and tries them in front of a mirror, just when a certain unfortunate boy walks in. Surprised, Mikoto asks him what's he doing here. He gets interrupted by Hazamaya Kana, calling him big brother and bringing a dress to show him. Touma explains that the girl isn't his sister, she simply wanted to go to a dress store and he led her here. Mikoto then suggests that they should fight to settle the score from yesterday. Touma refuses and walks away. Confused, Kana says that they should get along. Saten and Uiharu approach, and Kana recognizes and hugs Uiharu. Mikoto takes the opportunity to excuse herself in the bathroom. After leaving the bathroom, Mikoto notices a person with a frog toy in his hands. She initially thinks it's Gekota but then realises it's a different brand. She wonders why a person would bring a stuffed animal to a place like this.

Mikoto reunites with her friends and learns that Kana has also gone to the bathroom. At this moment a frantic Shirai Kuroko calls Uiharu, saying that graviton acceleration has been detected in the Seventh Mist. Uiharu tells Kuroko that she is already there and hangs up. She tells Mikoto that the store is the target and to help her with evacuating the bystanders, and she tells Saten to go outside with the others. Touma comes rushing in to ask Mikoto where Kana is. Kuroko calls Uiharu again and tells her to leave the store this instant. She tells her that the Graviton bombings are targeting Judgment members, so the current target must be Uiharu. Kana approaches while holding the frog toy, telling Uiharu that a boy wearing glasses wanted her to have this. As the bomb is about to explode, Uiharu throws the toy away and protects Kana, while warning Mikoto and Touma to run. Mikoto tries to blast it away with her Railgun but accidentally drops her coin. The only problem is that she dropped her coin and the bomb was going to explode before she took out another one. People from the outside witness the resulting explosion and say that there were people still inside, one of them being a Judgment member.

The bomber, Kaitabi Hatsuya, walks away into a dark alley and compliments himself for how far he's come with his power. He says that he only needs to "dispose" of a few more Judgment members. Mikoto approaches from behind and kicks him in the back. She tells him that he should know what's going on by now and calls him "Mister Bomb Maniac". He lies and says that he doesn't know what she's talking about. Mikoto tells him that no one got injured in the explosion. He blurts out that this can't be possible as he used his full power, then back-pedals and claims that he thought no one could have done anything about such a serious explosion. He pulls out a spoon but Mikoto destroys it with her Railgun and then restrains him. Recognizing her as Tokiwadai's Railgun, he complains that everyone with powers is the same and threatens to kill them all. Mikoto deliberately misses Kaitabi with a lightning bolt, then tells him that Tokiwadai's Level 5's were Level 1s who obtained their great power through hard work. She says that even if she was a Level 1 she would've still stood up to him. She hits him once before they're done talking.

Judgment arrives on the scene. A Judgment girl tells Kuroko that the criminal has been captured. Uiharu calls out to Shirai and she comments on that Uiharu is still in one piece. Uiharu said that it was Mikoto's doing. Kuroko sees that only the spot where Uiharu and there others stood was unaffected by the explosion. She wonders how Misaka used her ability to protect them.

Later, Mikoto recalls that her Railgun didn't make it in time to protect them and that in the end, Touma protected them. Coincidentally he walks by her and Mikoto asks why he didn't take the credit for saving them. He says that it doesn't matter since no one got hurt. As one of the staff workers from Seventh Mist comes to congratulate Misaka, she ends up kicking the door and starts insulting Touma. Touma senses an intense, unreasonable grievance.
