Penitence (懺悔 Zange?) is the 128th chapter of the Toaru Kagaku no Railgun manga series, released on October 27th 2020 in Monthly Comic Dengeki Daioh.

Synopsis[]

Kimi's dragon crumbles before the power of Mikoto's Railgun. Then, a stunned Kimi receives an electrified punch from Mikoto, knocking her out momentarily. Minutes later, she wakes up to Mikoto asking for a few demands: to no longer cause any harm to Uiharu and accept her past. Mikoto then reveals that she knows how it feels to be protected long ago, and wants Kimi to learn from it rather than to run away from her problems.

Kimi's group is soon sent to the Second Reformatory due to their involvement in the attack on the facility. Kimi has a short "conversation" with Honoka inside her solitary confinement cell. Tsurigane makes a self-recollection of Honoka's last words to her and wonders whether she would meet her end in the hands of her master. Raifu talks with Yamashiro Shoubu in a visit, where he contextualizes her character as someone who is looking for an ideal hero. He also confesses about acting based on an incomplete notion of "evil", something that was only corrected by a certain tomboyish girl's attack on him. Shoubu's story brought Raifu to tears somehow. Shoubu soon leaves upon timing out on his visit and promises to come back, his leg still recovering after being attacked by the same girl he is willing to talk again to.

Major Events[]

  • With the dragon finally crumbling to dust, Kimi faces defeat in the hands of Mikoto. Mikoto then asks Kimi to no longer pursue Uiharu and to accept her past.

Referbacks[]

  • Back in the Sisters Arc, Mikoto experienced the pain of being protected when Touma decided to fight Accelerator alone.
  • Tsurigane managed to see Honoka still breathing before she said her final words.[1]
  • It is revealed that Shoubu and Raifu share a past during their childhood. Shoubu, then a boy with a "conviction that cannot be considered good or evil", ends up bullying a young Raifu. It was an attack from Honoka that made him change his ways.[2]
  • Yamashiro Shoubu's leg, left broken by Raifu during a previous encounter, is still recovering during this chapter.[3]

Cultural References[]

  • On the title page, Honoka and Kimi are depicted wearing extremely long skirts with their uniform. This is likely a reference to sukeban, young females that practice delinquency or gang-related activity and are stereotypically seen flaunting school uniform regulations like having longer skirts than normal.
  • Campas, the name of the notebook, is an parody of the Japanese notebook brand Campus.
