Gameplay[]
This section requires expansion General expansion |
Gameplay in Imaginary Fest combines elements of a turn-based RPG and a gacha/card game.
Most of the non-battle menus share the same layout of buttons and displays on the screen's top-most and bottom-most rows. The top row has a return/back button, a display for the current mode's name with information and help buttons, displays for Player Level and various sources, and a battery icon. The bottom row has large buttons/icons labelled Home (ホーム Hōmu?), Character (キャラ Kyara?), Quest (クエスト Kuesuto?), Gacha (ガチャ Gacha?), Shop (ショップ Shoppu?) and Menu (メニュー Menyū?).
Gacha and Characters[]
This section requires expansion General expansion |
Characters are randomly obtained through a gacha system, with several resources which are collected in order to roll or facilitate the gacha, and variations in the poll of obtainables depending on circumstances at the time (such as promotions and limited-time events).
Each character is given stars according to their initial rarity, with more common versions having 1 or 2 stars, while the rarer and more potent characters are given 3 stars, along with a more detailed illustration. Characters can also be enhanced, which increases their stars by 3 in the process and unlocks new variation of their character image, with the initially 3-star characters exhibiting the more noticeable changes.
Characters fall into two main types; Battle (バトル Batoru?) and Assist (アシスト Ashisuto?). Battle characters fight on the field of battle, while Assist characters don't fight directly on the field but are partenered with Battle characters to support them. Additionally, each character possesses a colored Attribute (属性 Zokusei?, alt. "Element"), which affects effectiveness against other characters with different Attributes. Red (赤 Aka?) has an advantage against Green (緑 Midori?), which has an advantage over Blue (青 Ao?), which in turn has the advantage over Red, while Yellow (黄 Ki?) and Purple (紫 Murasaki?) are effective against each other. Some characters possess a super (超 Chō?) version of the five regular Attributes. Other fixed parameters assigned to characters include their 'side' (Magic, Science or Other), attack type (either Physical (物理 Butsuri?) or Supernatural (異能 Inō?)), and attack directions (either 1, 2 or 3 directions, with the potential directions being forward, forward-left and forward-right, relative to the character's position).
Characters also possess several stats which can be increased along with the character's Level; HP, Dexterity (器用 Kiyō?), Physical Attack (物理攻撃 Butsuri Kōgeki?), Supernatural Attack (異能攻撃 Inō Kōgeki?), Physical Defense (物理防御 Butsuri Bōgyo?) and Supernatural Defense (異能防御 Inō Bōgyo?).
Aside from levelling up or strengthening characters, players can also obtain CP (Character Points (キャラクターポイント Kyarakutāpointo?)) by using character in battle, or by setting them as "My Character" (Myキャラ My Kyara?) and using the Meeting (待ち合わせ Machiawase?) and Gift (ギフト Gifuto?) options. Increasing a character's CP rank grants status bonuses as well as unlocking voice lines (spoken while interacting with characters set as "My Character"), associated side stories and other items.
Battle[]
This section requires expansion Joint attacks |
Battles in Imaginary Fest are fought in a turn-based form, alternating between player and enemy turns. Battle quests mostly consist of several 'waves' of multiple enemies, fought in succession, with some singular Bosses and Raids. To clear a typical quest, a player must defeat all of the enemy waves, being defeat if all characters in their main and reserve teams are defeated. The wave, enemy and turn counts are displayed on the top-center of the screen.
Battles are fought by Battle characters, with the option for one character (either a Battle character, or an Assist character, which is restricted to this option) to be partnered to assist each Battle character. Players fight battles with up to three Battle characters in play at any one time, starting off with a Main Team of up to 3 characters, with a sub-team of up to 3 characters in reserve should any members of the main team be defeated (when their HP falls to 0).
The field of gameplay consists of a Player Zone and an Enemy Zone, both of which have a row of five smaller zones in which a character can be placed. The positions of a character on the field and the individual characters' attack directions determine which opposing characters they can attack. Additionally, enemy characters may have a Break point assigned to a specific direction - if a character attacks them from that direction, each attacker with lower a count. When the Break count hits 0, the enemy character will be incapacitated for one turn. A player can freely reposition their characters on the field before they initiate their attacks with the "Begin Attack" (攻撃開始 Kōgeki Kaishi?) button in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
Battle characters have three offensive/support actions that they can perform; a basic Attack, a Skill (スキル Sukiru?), and a Special, the latter two requiring a specified number of turns to 'cooldown' before they can be used again. In addition, they have unlockable potential abilities, as well as support from any partnered character. Special moves can only performed when the respective Special meter (positioned on the bottom of the screen for the player) has been filled up by a specific percentage.

Imaginary Fest has multiple story modes and segments, with non-time-limited variants including the Main Story (メインストーリー Meinsutōrī?), Side Stories (サイドストーリー Saidosutōrī?) and Spot Stories (スポットストーリー Supottosutōrī?).
The Main Story is a near-direct adaptation of events depicted in the Toaru Majutsu no Index and Toaru Kagaku no Railgun anime, gradually updated over time. Side Stories are multi-part stories which come in two varieties; both Character Stories (キャラ別ストーリー Kyara-betsu Sutōrī?, lit. "Story by character") and Organization Stories (組織別ストーリー Soshiki-betsu Sutōrī?, lit. "Story by organization"). Spot Stories are random short segments found in 'spots' across the game's map. Additionally, story elements are found within time-limited Events (イベント Ibento?), with Scenarios (シナリオ Shinario?) typically having more story.
Aside from parts of the story covered by the anime, some of the side stories and events include portions from the light novels and manga which have not been adapted to anime form. However, much of the game's story content is of an original and non-canonical nature.
For Imaginary Fest's adaptation of Index III, aside from being a near-direct adaptation of the anime, the game also included some content that was omitted from the anime, such as Hattori Hanzou's appearance in the Battle Royale Arc and Vasilisa's fight against Nikolai Tolstoy in the World War III Arc.
Original Story[]
Imaginary Fest also has an Original Story (オリジナルストーリー Orijinaru Sutōrī?) (alternatively Original Scenario (オリジナルシナリオ Orijinaru Shinario?)) written by Kamachi Kazuma, which was announced in 2022 and began releasing chapters every two months from June 2023 to December 2023. Two original characters were made for the story; Thirteen Death and City Macabre.
Set in Academy City between the events of Shinyaku Toaru Majutsu no Index Light Novel Volume 11 and Shinyaku Toaru Majutsu no Index Light Novel Volume 12, it begins with Touma facing an intended anti-Magic God magician after Othinus's life during a cleanup event, only for the city to be faced with a greater upheaval in the form of the Return (リターン Ritān?) - a sudden, inexplicable incident where many of the city's dead seemingly come back to life.

On September 24th 2024, the producer announced that the game would be concluding service on December 2nd 2024, along with the announcement of a memorial version of the game and an artbook, also to be released in December.[3]
Memorial Version[]
This section requires expansion General expansion[12] |
Toaru Majutsu no Index: Imaginary Fest Memorial Version (『とある魔術の禁書目録 幻想収束』メモリアルVer?) was released after end-of-service maintenance ended on December 2nd 2024, and will allow for transfer of play data and partial refunding until March 15th 2025.[12]
It will retain various functions of the original version, however many parts of the game will be either modified or deleted in order to transition to an offline version.[12] This includes the removal of the Gacha, Quest and Shop functions, as well as the game's Battle mode. Additional, all songs and character voices will be removed, along with all collaboration-related data (including memories/stories as well as battle and assist characters) and time-limited items.[12]
Although the Battle mode will be removed, the memorial version will include a battle scene viewer (バトル演出鑑賞 Batoru Enshutsu Kanshō?), allowing players to view animations for battle characters that were available before end of service. The five animation options available will be "Attack" (攻撃 Kōgeki?) "Appearance" (登場 Tōjō?) "Victory" (勝利 Shōri?) "Skill" (スキル Sukiru?) and "Special Move" (必殺技 Hissawwaza?), with "Skill 2" (スキル2 Sukiru 2?) and "Super Special Move" (超必殺技 Chō Hissawwaza?) for dual characters. It will also apparently allow three types of "stages" (ステージ Sutēji?) and "enemies" (エネミー Enemī?).[12]
The memorial version will allow players to view 'memories' of the non-Main stories that they unlocked, including the Original Story, Event Stories, Character and Organization Stories and the Spot Stories. The Character List and My Character functions will allow players to view the characters they had unlocked and read their voice lines. It also includes the 'picture book' and anniversary greeting, as well as the minigame featuring Index. As mentioned previously, all of these functions will lack character audio and collab-related entries.[12]
Artbook[]
