- In Greek Mythology, the titan Cronus was given a sickle made of adamant and used it to castrate his father Uranus, the sky, and took over as ruler of the gods, before being dethroned by his own son Zeus.[7]
- The Christian relic hunter mentioned in the chapter is Hugh of Lincoln, a 12th century English monk and Catholic saint, who was notorious for his zeal as a relic collector, doing things like biting an arm bone off Saint Mary Magdalene and, after failing to extract one of his teeth, managed to get a bone from between the eye sockets of Saint Denis of Paris.[2]
- The unsalted rye bread and unfermented grace juice mentioned during Isabella Theism's invocation of a dead spirit are likely derived from the Eucharist, a rite in which sacramental bread and wine represents the body and blood of Christ.[2]
- Saint Catherine is invoked for Lucia's spell as a symbol of knowledge. The spoken aspect of outtalking any and all scholars refers to when the Roman emperor Maxentius summoned 50 philosophers and orators to dispute with her and refute her arguments but Catherine won the debate.[6] The wooden wheel in her legend is also referenced as the basis of Lucia's usual weapon.[5]
- Hermes Trismegistus is the purported author of the Hermetica, a group of texts which form the basis of Hermeticism.[7]
- Simony (named after Simon Magus) is the act of trafficking spiritual or sacred things, such as church positions or consecrated objects, for money.[3]
- While exciting over the prospect of an undamaged corpse, Isabella refers to the Hand of Glory and bodies being compressed into a diamond.[1]
- A Hand of Glory is a dried and pickled left hand of a hanged man which, when holding a lit candle made from the fat of a person who died in the gallows, is said to have power to bind people and unlock doors.
- Memorial diamonds are created by compressing the carbon in the ashes left behind after a person is cremated.
