- The names given to many of Matsuo Ryuusuke's created specimens are derived from creatures in various mythologies and folklore:[1]
- The Kraken is a giant cephalopod-like sea monster of Scandinavian and maritime folklore.
- Fenrir and Hraesvelgr are two creatures from Norse Mythology; the wolf who devours Odin at Ragnarok and the eagle whose wing-beats create the winds respectively. The two have also formed the basis for entities connected to Gremlin; a magician and a creation of Brísingamen respectively.[2][3]
- Hydra and Karkinos are creatures from Greek Mythology, connected to the Second Labor of Heracles. The Lernaean Hydra is the multiple-headed and poisonous serpent which Heracles was tasked with slaying and Karkinos was the crab sent to hinder him (and later made into the Zodiac constellation Cancer).
- The Omukade is a giant man-eating centipede yōkai in Japanese mythology.
- A Wendigo is a monster from Algonquian folklore.
- A Griffin (alternatively griffon or gryphon) is a legendary heraldic creature with the head and wings of an eagle, and the body, tail and rear legs of a lion.
