January: Pneuma-less Shell[]

Featured Article
Pneuma-less Shell

The compact form of the Pneuma-less Shell.

Starting off a new year, the Featured Article this time is for the Pneuma-less Shell, a spiritual item which appears in Souyaku Toaru Majutsu no Index, the most recent parts of the story at the time of writing (you have been warned).

Derived from elements of Rosicrucian alchemy, it is a base metal still created by intentionally distorting the Philosopher's Egg, a vessel said to be used in the creation of the Philosopher's Stone. It appears either in the compressed form of small flask or a 2 meter wide metallic sphere with a wheel attached. Instead of the legendary red stone, it randomly produces an object whenever its wheel is spun, beyond even the foresight or control of the two legendary Rosicrucians known to have used it.

Besides alleviating its initial user's boredom or providing a random element that an enemy cannot predict, it is also intended to meaningfully reduce the user's status in a way that is meant to keep them from making careless mistakes. Although it seemingly produces random junk, the essence of the history and tradition associated with these items (many "first" or "the world's oldest" for various things) can be extracted and utilized for powerful magic.

March: Toaru Majutsu no Index Light Novel Volume 01[]

Featured Article
Toaru Majutsu no Index Light Novel v01 cover

The original cover of Toaru Majutsu no Index Volume 1.

From the most recent part of the story to the very start, with the date of the 20th anniversary approaching, the Featured Article this time is for where it all began; Toaru Majutsu no Index Volume 1.

Its story introduces a world of both science and magic, the primary setting of Academy City where advanced technology and scientifically-developed espers are commonplace, and main protagonist Kamijou Touma, the high school boy plagued by misfortune whose right hand dispels the supernatural. It covers his first meeting with Index, the nun with a perfect memory and the contents of 103,000 grimoires in her head, and the initial events which result from it. When magic and science cross paths, the story begins...

Kamachi Kazuma's debut work as a light novel author, it marks the start of the original Toaru Majutsu no Index series (later referred to as the 'Old Testament') as well as the overall Toaru series. First published on April 10th 2004, the volume was coincidentally(?) released one hundred years to the date when the alleged dictation of the Book of the Law's contents to Aleister Crowley was completed.

Featured Article
RadiosondeCastle

A strike from Mjölnir's Throwing Hammer hitting Radiosonde Castle.

Following in the path of an earlier Featured Article and given current circumstances, this time is going to be covering Radiosonde Castle, a massive airborne structure vaguely resembling the Star of Bethlehem.

Around the time Kamijou Touma returned to Academy City after the events of World War III, Radiosonde Castle emerged into the upper atmosphere, to the alarm of magical factions who had only recently faced the Star of Bethlehem and the threat posed by such a large object plummetting to earth from a height of 52km. A creation of Gremlin, it was a message set to follow Imagine Breaker all the way home.

Elements of both magic and science were involved in its construction, with gas-filled metal 'balloons' being used to give it lift (with its name coming from Academy City's similar-altitude Mesosphere Radiosonde balloons) and a ground-based magical tracking mechanism involving ley line distortions and their subsequent correction by its target being used to guide it. Gremlin member Mjölnir was stationed onboard to deal with intruders mid-flight.

Church of Orsola

The Church of Orsola under construction

The Featured Article this is for the Church of Orsola, a Roman Catholic church that was being built in Japan, somewhere near Academy City, named after Orsola Aquinas for her efforts in preaching aboard.

Planned to be the largest church in Japan and around the size of a baseball stadium, capable of holding 250 or more people even during its construction, the church is composed of seven chapels, each intended to be used to carry out one of the seven sacraments, with their size varying depending on purpose, funding and profits. It was also intended as a tourist attraction, with the Roman Catholic Church making a website for it.

The church was the site of Touma, Index, Stiyl and the Amakusa Church's battle against the Roman Catholic Church's Agnese Forces, to protect Orsola Aquinas during the incident surrounding her supposed decoding of the Book of the Law.

At the end of one year and the beginning of the next, this month's Featured Article is for the group involved in the conflicts at the start of Souyaku Toaru Majutsu no Index, R&C Occultics.

A giant IT company specializing in magic, it suddenly appeared in late December, as a new era was beginning for both the Magic and Science Sides, rapidly growing in the gaps between them. Exceeding the practices of a typical IT giant, R&C Occultics provided a wide variety of occult-related services and goods, releasing dangerous and normally hidden magical information into the open.

As suggested by the company's name, it had Rosicrucian roots, its founder and CEO being the legendary Anna Sprengel, who used hidden Rosicrucian treasures to fund its creation, along with various pawns and collaborators, with multiple hidden agendas intended for the company as a tool in her plans.

Magic: Coven Compass[]

Featured Article
Coven Compass (Anime)

The Coven Compass, as seen in the anime

The Featured Article this time is for the Coven Compass, a mobile fortress crewed by witches affiliated with the Anglican Church.

A flying disk of stone over 200m across and 10m thick, with a surface resembling a compass, the Coven Compass has ropes on its underside from which witches can sit ready to launch. As well as countermeasures against anti-flight spells, it also possesses the capacity for long-range bombardment.

The Coven Compass was involved in the British Halloween, coming under attack over the island of Islay by the knights just after the coup d'état began, having headed to the edge of the Curtana's effective range. With the witches having endured the attack, the fortress played a key role in interference actions against Carissa and her Curtana Original.

Facility Layout - Railgun Ch115

The layout of the private juvenile hall

This month's Featured Article is for the focus of Railgun's Jailbreaker Arc, the Second Reformatory.

A private juvenile hall as opposed to the original publically-run Reformatory and built with esper criminals in mind, the facility possesses sturdy walls and perimeter defenses, extensive coverage by AIM Jammers, and a large compliment of guard robots.

Beginning operations in mid-October, not long after an attack on the first Reformatory, Director Kyougoku Ryouta sought to promote the strength of its security through the Jailbreak Trial, where competitors would challenge the facility's defenses, attempting to break in and successfully escape with a target 'prisoner' for a cash prize.

The Featured Article this time is for the Blasting Rod, a magic staff wielded by Aleister Crowley.

Described as a bent silver rod, clear like glass at times and plant-like in design, the Blasting Rod has also been described as Aleister Crowley's strongest weapon. It was inherited from Allan Bennett, Aleister's friend, rsepected mentor and fellow member of the Golden Dawn, along with potent magic possessing a high synergy with the staff.

The Blasting Rod was first glimpsed in the story as Aleister was considering action after the Daihaseisai and first seen used in action against Fiamma of the Right in the aftermath of World War III, though its true power and the nature of that power would not be revealed until much later.

Featured Article
Mathers - Symbolic Weapons

Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers

The Featured Article this time is for Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, one of the three founders of the Golden Dawn and a major figure in Aleister Crowley's past.

A charismatic, aloof and authoritarian eccentric who styled himself as a highlander, Mathers was devoted to magical research and the pursuit of his goals, never holding down a worldly job (to his wife Mina's frustration). Often at odds with fellow founder and traditionalist William Wynn Westcott, Mathers desired progress even if it meant heresy, and sought to have his name be the one ultimately associated with the fruits of the Golden Dawn's research.

A powerful and skilled magician, in battle Mathers wielded the fundamental Symbolic Weapons which symbolize the four elements, drawing out their full potential to designate and manipulate aspects of the material world to devastating effect. He was proficient at many forms of magic, planned and improvised, one of his most feared spells being the invocation of the demon Belzébuth. He was also a talented writer and translator, skilled at handling original grimoires and creating less harmful versions from them.

Mathers was the one who invited Aleister Crowley into the cabal, seeking to exploit the youth to further his own success, but would ultimately be struck down by him in the events surrounding the Battle of Blythe Road. Although his ambitions were cursed to failure, Mathers' legacy had a major impact on the events of the series, in particular the latter half of Shinyaku Toaru Majutsu no Index.

RAILGUN SS2 07 027

The Featured Article this time concerns the "Wheel Snake", a large spiritual item and magical weapon which appeared in Toaru Kagaku no Railgun SS2.

Created by Caliche I. Niknosh's magic cabal, users of Ex Voto, it is powered by Telesma aligned with Archangel Michael, who is considered both an angel and a patron saint, and based on the chain used to bind fallen angel Lucifer after his defeat at Michael's hands. It is made up of giant stone wheels, connecting into a shape resembling a giant snake over 70 meters long. It destroys its surroundings with its size and weight, drawing debris into the space between the gears to further crush it.

Originally intended as an insurance against the higher-ups of the Russian Shopping Center not keeping their end of their bargain during their co-operation, it was deployed after the cabal's members came into conflict with members of New Light in the later stages of the events surrounding Misaka Mikoto's visit to the shopping center.

They are tiny bits of reflective alloy, which can only be properly seen with special equipment but can be noticed from reflected light. They are not nanodevices, lacking circuitry and power, but can be manipulated using various frequencies, with tiny arms that open and close in response to electromagnetic waves. Usually spread around on airborne micro-organisms, they are capable of completely stripping a person's flesh from their bones.

Possibility, Event: Dogfight over the Sea of Japan[]

Featured Article
Airfight

Two aircraft during the dogfight

The Featured Article this time around concerns a dogfight over the Sea of Japan which occurred on October 30th during World War III, of which only a tiny glimpse was seen in Toaru Majutsu no Index III.

The aerial battle was fought between Russian and Academy City fighters, with the former attempting to break through the defensive line established by the former over the Sea of Japan. In order to maintain air superiority, Academy City deployed ten HsF-00s, giant supersonic fighters around 80m long and capable of flying at over 7000 kph, supported by a number of smaller, unmanned craft. In addition to possessing high speed, range and maneuverability, and highly accurate advanced weaponry, the craft were designed for increased flight time with fuel-saving measures and supported by an aerial resupply network.

Despite expectations in Russia and the rest of the world that Academy City would be wiped out once its apparent last line of defense over the sea was broken, given that its population was mostly children and it was facing one of the world's three greatest military powers with a numerical advantage, the Russian forces were unable to overcome the technology gap, even with their most advanced aircraft, during the two weeks of the war.

HinoJinsaku Profile

The Featured Article this time around is one concerning an antagonist of the Angel Fall Arc, who only appeared in the light novels and was not featured in the anime, Hino Jinsaku.

A psychiatric patient and serial killer with multiple personality disorder, he escaped from prison shortly before Angel Fall and had taken refuge within Wadatsumi with the police on his trail.

Following an attack on Kamijou Touma, who was coincidentally watching a report on his escape, he became the initial prime suspect to the magicians investigating Angel Fall, given that his appearance had not been swapped like most other people and his tendency to call out to an angel (both actually the result of his mental condition). Defeated after holing up in the Kamijou residence, interrogation showed he was not the perpetrator, and he was left to the police.

Magic: Albert Dying[]

Albert Dying

Caption

The Featured Article this time is for Albert Dying, alias Tu, the leader of a magician's guild dating from the time of ancient Greece, typically known as "the Guild", and the hidden main antagonist of Toaru Majutsu no Index SS: Agnese's Magic Side Work Experience.

Described as a dreamer, Albert was focused on achieving his own dreams, with no compunction for the negative consequences that might befall others in the process. Projecting a casual and pleasant air of supposed detachment and enlightenment, he would manipulate people to support those dreams, convincing them it would bring them happiness, but ultimately at their expense. He shared the Guild's desire to remain on the winning side of the world and continue to 'win', with the group having survived to the present day through Greek, Roman and Christian times, by blending in with the masses and freely changing out their culture to match the current 'winners', regardless of right and wrong.

Considering that Christianity's time was over and it was time to move on, Albert plotted to facilitate the change by destroying the Vatican with the Sickle of Saturn. However, a deception regarding the sickle's authenticity resulted in an initial failure and a major setback, with Albert having been presumed dead at Stiyl Magnus's hands.

Event: Destruction of Tree Diagram[]

Featured Article
Toaru Majutsu no Index E06 06m 04s

The moment of Tree Diagram's destruction

The Featured Article this time concerns the Destruction of Tree Diagram, a notable event in the beginning of Toaru Majutsu no Index.

Housed in the Orihime I satellite to protect it from potential enemies, Tree Diagram was Academy City's foremost supercomputer and the most powerful computer in the world, 25 years ahead of any other machine. Tasked with monitoring numerous aspects of the city and performing high-accuracy simulations for selected experiments (such as the Level 6 Shift Project), it predicted the movement of the particles in the atmosphere to calculate a month's worth of weather in one go.

On July 22nd, during the battle to save Index, a high-powered beam was redirected skywards and reached space, destroying Orihime I which happened to be above the site at the time. The computer's destruction, not made public, had notable consequences, and a number of resultant events. Besides a reduction of accurate calculation capacity, its loss foiled Misaka Mikoto's plan to sabotage it for a false reassessment to stop the Level 6 Shift Project and save the Sisters. Additionally, various factions launched spacecraft to recover its remains, leading to a conflict over the Remnant.

Magic: Curtana[]

Featured Article
Curtana

Curtana Second

The Featured Article this time around is the Curtana, a sword wielded by the ruler of the United Kingdom. Based on the real-life ceremonial sword used in the coronation of British monarchs, in the Toaru series, it is the core of a national spell which grants them the power of the Archangel Michael within the UK's borders.

The 'Sword of Mercy' acquired its immense power when Henry VIII sought to rid himself of external influences impeding his rule and split from the Roman Catholic Church. Establishing the Anglican Church and making the king its head, he equated the position with the leader of the angels (higher than the Pope) and his knights with the army of angels. Magical symbolism derived from the four nations of the British Isles was used to form the foundation of the spell woven into the land, with the sword symbolically representing the monarch becoming its focal point.

The Curtana provides its royal wielder with the simulated power of Archangel Michael and allows them to supply the knights with Telesma, while they are within the territory of the United Kingdom. Additionally, just as it was meant to symbolically cut the kingdom apart from the world, the sword is capable of slicing through every dimension along the path of its slash.

The Curtana Original had been lost due to a malfunction during the 17th century civil war, with the Curtana Second being forged to replace it. The unearthing of the original sword and its use in an attempted coup d'état was at the center of events surrounding Touma and Index's October trip to the UK.

Science: Five Over[]

NT Index v01 355

Five Over Modelcase "Railgun"

The Featured Article this time concerns the Five Over, an Academy City project and the series of machines produced by it, aimed at technologically reproducing and exceeding the power of the seven Level 5s (hence the name).

Based on macro-scale engineering instead of the micro-scale quantum mechanics behind esper powers, the philosophy behind Five Over is "using only technology to create something that exceeds the original" in reproducing phenomena utilized by the Level 5s (such as Misaka Mikoto's Railgun with the gatling railgun on the Modelcase "Railgun"). The currently seen Five Overs are Powered Suits, capable of being worn, piloted remotely or operating autonomously.

In addition to the main series which uses methods similar to the Level 5 powers, there is a variation known as the Five Over Outsider (OS) which, while still using pure technology for the reproduction, uses different methods to produce the intended phenomenon, resembling rather than strictly replicating it.

Dark May Project

The Featured Article this time concerns the Dark May Project, an experiment carried out in Academy City several years before the main story, which influenced several characters and events in the series.

Using young esper test subjects, likely Child Errors, the primary experiment's objective was to replicate Accelerator's powers by implanting his thought patterns into the project's elites (such as Kinuhata Saiai and Kuroyoru Umidori) to optimize their Personal Reality and utilize similar patterns of ability operation. Few of the children faired well, with many of them ending up on dissection tables for scientists investigating where Personal Reality is located in the brain.

Aside from the primary experiment and separate from the main lab, a variation of the project under the guise of an ability boosting lab, surgically tampered with specific areas of the brain to observe the effect on their test subjects' abilities. However, a discovery concerning the true ability of one of their subjects led to a schism over its immense potential and danger, and ultimately to the lab's destruction, ahead of the main project's downfall.
