Toyama Luca (
Appearance[]
Luca is a girl of about 15 with curly blonde hair down to her shoulder blades and blue eyes. She wears a black rose eyepatch over her right eye as an accessory, a large pirate tricorne hat with a feather in it and a thick navy blue sailor's coat with white epaulettes. She wears a large musket on her back and a cutlass in a scabbard on the buckle of her thick belt. A long, narrow ramrod is also stored within the sword's scabbard.[2][3] The leather belt holding her musket also holds a skull-shaped container of gunpowder and a bullet case modeled after an arm bone.[4][3] During her initial appearance at the dormitory, she wore a miniskirt,[5][1] while during the heat wave and events after it, she wore a blue bikini below her coat.[2][3]
When using her magic to alter her age, Luca usually changes her appearance to either a child of between 7 and 10, or a college-age adult, with her clothes remaining the same size.[2][6][7][4][8][3]
Personality[]
Luca has a love for the sea, not the liquid covering most of the Earth's surface, but the blue doorway connecting all parts of the world, leading to a new land and always with someone waiting beyond the horizon. She considers cities gray, cramped, boring and stifling, cutting everyone off from one another.[2] Not much else is known about Luca's personality, but it can be assumed that she possesses at least some of the traits common to the members of the Kamisato Faction.
When flattered or told she's being counted on, Luca has a tendency to go the extra mile, though this doesn't always turn out for the best.[9][4] As well as using antique weapons, Luca insists on using old-fashioned production methods for her gunpowder.[10]
Background[]
In the past, loving the sea compared to stifling cities, Luca displayed her love of the sea through art, though no one saw the true meaning behind her painting. Kamisato Kakeru was the only one who looked at her canvas and say the ocean looked like a blue doorway, seeing her soul inside the painting. As a result of this, she fell in love with him and ended up joining the Kamisato Faction.[2]
Chronology[]
World Rejecter Arc[]
- Main article: World Rejecter Arc
Luca was present together with other members of the Kamisato Faction during Kakeru's attempted negotiations with Kamijou Touma.[5]
Salome Arc[]
- Main article: Salome Arc
On December 5th, Luca was present when Kakeru betrayed Touma and set the Kamisato Faction on him, intending to kill him to make Salome stop.[1] They were thwarted when Salome herself interrupted them, kicking Luca away as she was closing in, bringing a provoked Accelerator with her.[11] Later that night, when Kihara Yuiitsu stole the World Rejecter, Luca and other Kamisato Faction girls offered their weapons to Salome to increase her power to fight Yuiitsu.[12]
Element Arc[]
- Main article: Element Arc
During the Element infestation and the subsequent heat wave in the city caused by Fran to slow them down, Luca and the rest of the Kamisato Faction set up base in the White Springs Shopping Center. On the morning of December 9th, Luca participated in the faction's march to the Windowless Building and the subsequent battle with Yuiitsu beneath it.[13][14][15] After Kakeru was forced to use the World Rejecter with conflicting desires to protect the others and was exiled, Yuiitsu used the threat of losing the possibility of saving him to force the Kamisato Faction to obey her. Luca and the others then attempted to kill Touma on her orders.[16]
Kamisato Rescue Arc[]
- Main article: Kamisato Rescue Arc
Though Luca remained with the rest of the Kamisato Faction for the first part of December 9th,[17][18] after being ambushed by Touma and Fran at the District 7's station plaza, she was convinced to help them find another way to rescue Kakeru.[2] She aided them during the events of December 9th and 10th, even when Fran was exposed as a spy.[9][19] Using her own magical knowledge, combined with observation of the Anti-Art Attachment,[20][10] Luca was able to devise a spell to access the 'new world' and after a thwarted first attempt,[10] managed to cast it together with Fran to rescue Kakeru.[21]
Abilities[]
Luca is a Magician who uses a special form of combat linked to Voodoo, which was present in the Caribbean where pirates once ruled. In order to carry out a variety of ceremonies with limited space, such as that found on a ship, she follows the Voodoo deity Legba Atibon (レグバ=アティボン Reguba Atibon?). As the deity of the gate who manages ceremonies, Legba Atibon indirectly appears in all Voodoo ceremonies and as such doesn't exist just on a specific ceremonial day, being defined as existing at all times. Using this concept as a basis, Luca is able to control subjective time, allowing her to change the age of her external appearance and prepare normally once-in-a-decade magic in seconds. According to Fran, as well as being able to appear older and younger, she can also skip past that time of the month.[2] Luca frequently uses her magic to shift from her normal teenage form to that of a child or an adult, in order to exploit their characteristics.[18][2][22][8][23][7] During combat, she often uses it to slip from enemies and evade their attacks.[2][8]
Luca is proficient with the use of her cutlass and musket, though the musket is not suited for quick use as it requires powder and bullet to be loaded through its muzzle with a ramrod.[2][24][9][8] She is capable of making gunpowder using old-fashioned production methods, likely using a nitrogen compound like nitric acid (giving the powder a distinct, traceable smell in the process).[10] She also possesses the knowledge required to make powder-based explosives and timed detonators, knowledge which would cause problems getting into college or getting a job.[9][4] As well as using black powder for her musket and explosives, Luca can also use trails of powder to draw out magic circles and other symbols, which are ignited through a musket flash when required for casting spells.[10]
As well as her Voodoo-based magic, Luca has knowledge of a variety of other magical concepts and formats.[2][25][20][10] After analyzing the core of the Anti-Art Attachment and the curse which struck Misaka Mikoto,[20][26] Luca was able to devise a spell to access the 'new world' and rescue Kamisato Kakeru, which she cast together with Karasuma Fran.[10][21] The spell makes use of Imitative and Infection Magic, as well as concepts from Voodoo, Thelema, Egyptian Mythology and Kabbalah.[10][27] It requires the presence of parts of a specific object or entity in both the 'new world' and the regular world, in this case the original Anti-Art Attachment or portions of Nephthys, in order to form a link between the two.[25][4]
Judging from her statements regarding her past, she also has a degree of artistic ability.[2] She is also licensed to drive small vehicles, up to mid-sized motorcycles.[9][27]
Equipment[]
Luca's primary weapons are a cutlass over 60cm long and a large flintlock musket.[2][4] The ramrod for the musket is stored in her cutlass's scabbard. Her belt also holds a skull-shaded container of gunpowder and bullet cases modeled after an arm bone.[4] The skull container has a cap like a bottle of fabric softener to measure powder for one shot,[4] and can be used as an improvised firecracker should the need arise.[2][22][9] A portion of the bullet case slides, to pull out a round bullet like a mint tablet.[4]
To create a distraction at Useful Spider's base, Luca created several improvised time bombs. These were glass cylinders slightly longer and thicker than a relay baton, filled with black powder. Once the seal is broken, the detonation sequence cannot be stopped and the bomb will detonate two and a half hours afterwards.[9] Dropping or breaking the cylinder and similar impacts are quite likely to set it off.[4][28]
She also carries a retro collapsible telescope.[9]
Character Art Design[]
According to Haimura Kiyotaka, he remembers crying in his heart as he drew her, thinking, If I leave the specifications as they are, it will look like Othinus!. In the process of trying to figure out what was right and what wasn't, he kept adding gadgets.[29]

Trivia[]
