The United States of America (アメリカ合衆国 Amerika Gasshūkoku?) is a country that takes up most of Northern American continent in the Earth's western hemisphere, and is bordered by Canada in the north and Mexico in the south.
Background[]
The White House is located in Washington, D.C..[2] The current president of the United States is Roberto Katze, and is the third Hispanic president to be elected.[3] The current vice president of the United States is Darris Hewlane.[4]
The United States is one of the earliest of the currently increasing number of countries which have a space program.[5]
Dealings with the Science Side[]
Though America isn't a part of the Science-side, on its own it has been trying to develop esper powers on their own since the Cold War. Though, still behind Academy City in terms of technology, the United States is still one of the foremost powerful economic and military entities in the world. The United States is the only country currently known to have invested a notable effort in creating their own esper program, though with limited success.
Dealing with the Magic Side[]
Richard Brave laid in setting up a defensive line along the Atlantic Ocean in order to prevent American magic cabals from invading the United Kingdom,[6] but the US government could not wholly understand magic.[7]

Angel Fall Arc[]

Washington, D.C. is briefly seen in television, in the first season of the Toaru Majutsu no Index anime. Here, Shirai Kuroko's form is taken-up by the President of the United States of America, saying Barack Obama's famous line: Yes we can. Needless to say, Kamijou Touma, due to the effects of his Imagine Breaker making him unaffected by the spell, as well as being ignorant of the spell's affect, is completely shocked by discovery, leading him to believe that the recent switching of personalities and the inexplicable appearance of people he knows around him is not just a mere prank.[8]
Tree Diagram Remnant Arc[]

The United States was one of the countries that launched spacecraft to retrieve the remains of the destroyed Tree Diagram.[5]
Document of Constantine Arc[]

The Anti-Academy City riot occurred in west coast cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. In Los Angeles, one side of a three-lane highway was completely filled with people. They were burning Academy City posters they had made and were ripping Academy City banners to shreds.[9]
World War III Arc[]

The United States of America, allied with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and part of the science-side, takes part in the World War III, but their contributions are largely overshadowed during the event, due to Academy City's overwhelming technological superiority, as well as the appearance of a power they could not wholly understand, magic.[7]

Hawaii Invasion Arc[]

Due to the strange movements of several people, including high government officials, President Roberto Katze leaves the side of his protection to investigate the mysterious occurrences. He would later be involved in trying to stop an invasion of Hawaii, and later the turning of the United States into a theocracy by Olay Blueshake with the help of Gremlin and Trident. With the aid of the Kamijou Faction and the Dawn-Colored Sunlight, Roberto and the United States military was able to stop the invasion, though at a great cost, the volcano, Kilauea still erupted, furthering Gremlin's plans.[10]
Magic God Othinus Arc[]

Still reeling from the attack in Hawaii and with Gremlin becoming even more brazen with their actions, the United States of America becomes involved in the opposition against Gremlin, seemingly leading the international coalition, the Anti-Gremlin Alliance, formed from various nations to oppose Gremlin.[11]
Kamijou Touma notes that the United States of America sets itself apart from the other dogmatic powers of the science and magic side by being the most rational.[12] Indeed, it is Roberto who is the first one of the international coalition's leaders to lay down his pride and trust humanity that they will not give into the fear of the power of a magic god like Othinus.

During the events on Christmas Day surrounding R&C Occultics, it was mentioned that Anna Sprengel had at least one cooperator in New York, likely set up to destroy themselves like the one in London.[13][14]
Los Angeles Arc[]

On December 26th, Los Angeles was the site of events surrounding R&C Occultics. Following the discovery of the company's headquarters in downtown LA, Academy City and the Anglican Church joined forces for a counterattack against them, Operation Overlord Revenge, with President Roberto Katze giving them permission to carry out the operation in US territory. However, Vice President Darris Hewlane had secretly betrayed him for R&C Occultics to gain power and in his guise as the magician Citrinitas, caused the entire population of Los Angeles to disappear early in the day.[15]
US forces remained at a distance from the city through much of the day, drawing criticism from the opposition and other parties. Darris's treachery came to light at a charity debate at the White House later in the day, after he fell for a trap in Roberto's speech, with a gun fight ensuing between President and Vice President, ending with Darris abandoning his remote double and shortly afterwards being defeated in Los Angeles, followed by the recovery of the city's population, the company's downfall, and his arrest.[15]
