WindFarm WindTurbines-RailgunSED

Wind turbines in an open field, being viewed from afar by Misaka Imouto and Misaka Mikoto in the Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S first ending theme.

A Wind Turbine (風力原動機 Fūryoku Gendōki?) is a device that converts kinetic energy from the wind, into mechanical energy, in order to produce energy.

Numerous wind turbines are used to generate electricity,[1] specifically, the Three-Bladed Propeller (三枚プロペラ San-mai Puropera?), inside Academy City, near roads, paths, or even with school grounds, and is one of the most iconic features of the city.

Principles[]

The power generator of the wind turbine is actually a motor. The central coil, that spins when electricity is used, creates electricity upon being spun manually. Moreover, the motors will rotate when supplied with specific electromagnetic waves.[2]

Usage in Academy City[]

The wind turbines are part of the city's experiments, like the Cleaning robot, but function well enough to be practical for the city.[3] The city has more than 10,000 wind turbines across the city,[4] which replace electric cables and power lines that are present in a regular city.[5]

Despite having other sources of electricity such as nuclear power plants or School District 21's dams, the wind turbines are the city's main source of electricity, the other being solar energy.[6]

Because the turbines are set up all across the city, it had the advantage of making it more difficult for a power outage to occur if some of them were destroyed in an accident or a disaster, adding complexity because the network of power supplies spread all across the city, making it a necessity for facilities to control the flow of electricity. As such, each district has its own Central Hub Transformer Station.[7]

The triple-bladed propellers are made of carbon fiber materials, with metal components in the tower. A propeller blade weighs about 500kg.[8]

School District 22[]

Wind turbines in School District 22

The entire surface of School District 22 is a wind farm. There are no buildings and as such, wind turbines cover the district. One interesting note about the district is it also uses a different type of wind turbine. Here, the wind turbines are piled up or arranged on top of one another which resemble a 30 story tall jungle gym. The reason being is that the underground complexes that extended downwards require a lot of electrical energy, and that the district cannot rely on regular wind-generated electricity or solar-generated electricity.[9]

Most of the energy is used to pump air in, absorbing oxygen in from the surface, removing the carbon dioxide accumulate below. Moreover, there is also a need to pump rainwater and wastewater up. With all those in consideration, 40% of the electricity consumed in Academy City is put into use for the large air pumps.[9]
